It may or may not be a good design, but yes, it's certainly more unique than a cartoon animal, and uniqueness counts for something.
I think the word that anon should have used to describe these new mice is "generic", rather than simple. The fact they're simple is not the problem, the problem is how bland they are, the fact you would not be able to tell it was supposed to be a Pokémon unless someone told you it was.
