These days I wouldn't even localize, I'd just link some real-time optical translater app with a referral code that let's you translate what's in the screen inside a wi dow or something

We are talking about a guy who thinks that using dependencies and engine made by someone else while programming a 2D game makes you a hack, and everything in the games should be personal handiwork. There is no way he will ever use machine translation, AI or such in his precious art game.

It is translating for the 15 hours of developer commentary.

Does Jon really think people would care to listen to him talking for 15 hours for Braid?

Translators are incredibly expensive, not to mention hiring a new set of voice actors, reanimating lip sync (if required), having casting for those VAs as well as hiring an actual localization department. If you're translating any UI elements those also all need to be changed, reformatted and checked as well. I write and edit text books for a living and getting a translation done for a book costs almost as much as writing the book from scratch. And that's just for 1 extra language. Not to mention having to re-edit the book for every new language, and reformat it based on image and text box placement etc. etc. etc.

Translation is a massive pain. I can't wait to throw my book into an AI and have some Venezuelan proof read it on Fiverr for $50 and be done with it.

Why reanimate lipsync when you can just speed up or slow down the audio to match the animation length?

        t. wanted a slav witcher 3 and dropped it because of that shit

We should go back to the old dubbed Japanese movie times. Would be great to see translators spew out some overly long bullshit dialogue while the character stands there with their mouth closed while the VA keeps talking.

oh god finally john goes broke and stops living in his enginedev bubble. maybe he'll make some videos grounded in reality in the future.
he's the epitome of a boomer, who made a quick buck from entering the industry at the perfect time. all his games would be considered small hobby projects in nowadays industry.

    >200k words

so at minimum $1 / word?
Blow can't be so moronic he's letting some scam-artist localizer eat up all his overhead? He shopped around for different quotes before deciding on what localization corporations to use, right? Surely he isn't using a different firm for each language?

He's definitely not fully broke but the budget for the Braid Anniversary is likely all used up. (which makes sense since it's released)

Even localizer dogshit is very pricy and going off online translators without a company middleman you'll get something like 0.13 - 0.39 dollars per word. So 200k would be around 26k - 76k dollars per language assuming no extra costs and not accounting for voice acting.

Jonathan blow is broke? I always assumed he was rich considering he made the first successful indie game, and gave out grants to other developers. The witness was successful too.

He already spent all his money once after Braid but remade it and made more with The Witness. I doubt he can do the same here, he might actually have to start releasing new games to not actually go broke.

No, he's got like two other games in development.
It was a response to someone requesting a simplified chinese translation of the new Braid release.
Probably just out of budget for it.
