This is the most authentic DBZ game ever (GameCube version)

It even gets side characters that appear for 3 seconds right and the anime narrator and some of the music
Is there any way to get rid oft he screen shaking on Dolphin, though? V-sync helps and in Retroarch all I have to do is change the downsample factor to fix the shaking of some N64 games
Does Dolphin have no downsampling or anything else that could fix it?

Doesn't make it unplayable but still

Every DBZ game after Budokai 1 for some reason opted for the ugliest shovelware cel shading look and replaced soulful 1:1 anime cutscenes with characters just standing around like toy soldiers or really just speak bubbles, see

Too bad the combat was tacked on and every character played the same and even reused wholesale animations.

They all have shitty gameplay compared to actual fighting game franchises and Budokai 2 and 3 even added awful shit like QTEs
It makes no sense how much you morons talk about Budokai 3 or Tenkaichi instead of the one and only DB fighting game that actually got the IP right (and has one of the most banger soundtracks of its generation)

For me, it's the Super Gokuden games. It feels like "playing" an interactive version of the manga, and the quiz parts allow for some fun alternate scenarios.
The story mode in Super Butoden 2 is also legendary, but only the Cell Game part is based on the original manga, the space pirates/Broly part is an original story made only for the game, not based on the movies the characters are from (and actually the space pirates part has a better, more fleshed out story than the movie)

We could've had Super Gokuden 3 on the PS1 instead of UB22. Dammit.

Yeah it's a shame they never did the Cell and Boo sagas in Super Gokuden form to complete all original 42 volumes of the manga.
They were such weird games though, coming out late in the Super Famicom life in 1995, and starting from the beginning of the story instead of focusing on what was new at the time. Also the games themselves are pretty experimental, with half VN parts and half RPG battles.

Honestly i think GC versions cel shading looks terrible here. Graphics were obvilously were created with not cel shading in mind so details get lost because of that. Also only characters have cel shading, world doesn't. I actually like HDversions best as adding lightning makes it look much better. HD>PS2>>>>>GC

      >so details get lost because of that.
Yeah, bad details that don't look anime, like Goku's donut mouth here. Characters don't look like ugly Sims models but actually have anime-looking shading. It looks great and a lot better than the disgusting Jet Set Radio cel-shading style that plagues video games ever since. Looking at the thumbnail, a normie could literally assume right is the anime. Certainly not left, though

Outside cel-shading the GC version also has other advantages like dynamic looking shadows instead of blob shadows, which helps this scene a lot

It doesn't fit with the background. Which is black in this case so it kinda fits kek. I don't think it looks convincing enough. It's subjective i guess.

Lightning and shadow are even better on HD versions.

Never understood how they tricked gaymers into believing thick black outlines and 3 polygon character models look like anime

It looks pretty good. Also changes on line thickness is one of the main things that gives manga its distinctive looks.

Budokai 1 is what got me into DBZ. It does a fantastic job telling the story. I remember hearing the development time was absurd just becsuse of the cutscenes. Few DBZ games capture the pure SOUL of Budokai 1. The Legacy of Goku series comes close. I even love the real shitty first entry.

I had this on PS2 back on release and had absolutely zero idea it ever released on GameCube along with the sequel apparently. Wild.
I agree, the cel shading technique they used here is better than anything they used afterwards, wonder why that is?
Apparently this version only runs at 30fps compared to PS2’s 60fps so it seems the greatly tuned visuals come at a cost so that might be why we didn’t see this become the standard for the rest or tenkaichi.

People might say it lacks gameplay depth but the tournament and just unlocking new skills for different characters is very addictive and a simple but great gameplay loop
