It even gets side characters that appear for 3 seconds right and the anime narrator and some of the music
Is there any way to get rid oft he screen shaking on Dolphin, though? V-sync helps and in Retroarch all I have to do is change the downsample factor to fix the shaking of some N64 games
Does Dolphin have no downsampling or anything else that could fix it?
Doesn't make it unplayable but still

What game is that? Budokai 1?
Yes
I used to have a fricking BLAST playing this in my OG PS2 days. I've been wanting to play BT3 for wii or whatever the frick its called.
Every DBZ game after Budokai 1 for some reason opted for the ugliest shovelware cel shading look and replaced soulful 1:1 anime cutscenes with characters just standing around like toy soldiers or really just speak bubbles, see
?t=162
Compared to this
The right atmosphere and vibes are so important for licensed games, no idea how people just tolerated this change
better gameplay
They all have shitty gameplay compared to actual fighting game franchises and Budokai 2 and 3 even added awful shit like QTEs
It makes no sense how much you morons talk about Budokai 3 or Tenkaichi instead of the one and only DB fighting game that actually got the IP right (and has one of the most banger soundtracks of its generation)
that reminds me of the Naruto menus, all the way down to the scrolls
It turned into them pumping out yearly entries so while the core gameplay improved everything else suffered.
Oh shit, I thought the gamecube version was censored, but I guess it also shows the insides of people when they take a beam attack to the gut.
>Raditz's ribs visible
brutal.
SO MUCH SOUL!!! I remember playing this in my living room while Grandpa watched. Looking back now, I imagine he was probably disappointed in me, but he feigned interest at the time. Love and miss you, Pop.
He loved you too anon. And that love didn’t leave the world just because he did. It lives on in your memory and actions, and even when you’re gone it will live on through those you touched and knew. Like this interaction here, your grandpa matters.
That's really nice, anon. Hope you have a great day.
Too bad the combat was tacked on and every character played the same and even reused wholesale animations.
For me, it's the Super Gokuden games. It feels like "playing" an interactive version of the manga, and the quiz parts allow for some fun alternate scenarios.
The story mode in Super Butoden 2 is also legendary, but only the Cell Game part is based on the original manga, the space pirates/Broly part is an original story made only for the game, not based on the movies the characters are from (and actually the space pirates part has a better, more fleshed out story than the movie)
We could've had Super Gokuden 3 on the PS1 instead of UB22. Dammit.
Yeah it's a shame they never did the Cell and Boo sagas in Super Gokuden form to complete all original 42 volumes of the manga.
They were such weird games though, coming out late in the Super Famicom life in 1995, and starting from the beginning of the story instead of focusing on what was new at the time. Also the games themselves are pretty experimental, with half VN parts and half RPG battles.
>Kill Nappa quick
>Vegeta takes over and kills everyone before Goku arrives
>Kill Vegeta quick
>Krillin and Gohan get murdered by Guldo on Namek
And my favorite, telling Tenshinhan that Piccolo is Piccolo, making him use the mafuba to kill his stupid ass. Oh and Raditz kills everyone later.
There is another game that's also very close to what the animus feel like but it's not /vr/
There’s a dbz game that does what Budokai one did? The series would’ve been amazing if they had just kept doing what they did in 1.
There is a child Goku focused game on DS or 3DS that seems nice
Side scrolling platformer/beat em up type game that goes through the story of OG dragon ball. Forget the name but I know what you’re talking about. Handheld DBZ games are better than the vast majority of the console ones imo
That was Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure?
You talking about Burst Limit? I liked that one, but it felt more like a proof of concept than anything.
I remember using an old Dolphin version for Budokai1/2, version 3.0 or 3.5, no interlacing shaking on those
Dolphin programming trannies get mad when you say the shaking wasn't always a thing. I too remember playing it without that shit
those cutscenes sound kino but the Budokai gameplay is pretty mediocre
Yea I got it for Christmas of whatever year it came out, was more hyped for the story mode then anything else. Really was unforgivable what they did to the series and I have no idea why later entries are so expensive.
because the gameplay is better, dude.
BT2 and BT3 in particular are DBZ paradise for any fan, having 80+ characters
Okay scalper.
lol ok moron
>uhhh uhm YEAH of COURSE the BIGGER the game the MORE it costs second hand!
yes, exactly, moron. that's more often than not the one that people want, not fricking Budokai 1
>he's surprised that DBZ games on PS2 are popular
>this is why scalpers scalp
>scalp scalp scalp
take your pills
Just emulate it if you can't afford it, dipshit.
You can dodge and do the super attacks from the show in real time with 60 frames. It's fine
Infinite World provides the complete storyline experience with better gameplay (the best of the Budokai series).
Never touched it because it got such atrocious reviews… that would obviously be my bad because it appears the only reasonable way of playing it is emulation. Unless it’s been ported or you can just turn on English in the Japanese copies
Recommending the undub GameCube version, it's uncensored. Screen shaking sucks but it's not that bad if you enable vsync and untick XFB and maybe something else
>it's uncensored.
What do you mean?, the anime itself is censored
The censored Budokai 1 also makes all the blood on Gohan's arm gray and other stuff
So it is just violence?
Do they show the hole when Goku is pierced by Piccolo?
The Europeon and the HD collection made it into a black burn mark looking thing. The uncut game looks normal.
The censored shot for comparison.
PAL user here, mine was uncensored. Also Raditz would go "sh...shucks!" during this sequence. That was the only thing censored in the PAL, every instance of "kuso" was subtitled "shucks!".
I remember seeing an actual hole when I was a kid. Am I remembering wrong?
Honestly i think GC versions cel shading looks terrible here. Graphics were obvilously were created with not cel shading in mind so details get lost because of that. Also only characters have cel shading, world doesn't. I actually like HDversions best as adding lightning makes it look much better. HD>PS2>>>>>GC
>so details get lost because of that.
Yeah, bad details that don't look anime, like Goku's donut mouth here. Characters don't look like ugly Sims models but actually have anime-looking shading. It looks great and a lot better than the disgusting Jet Set Radio cel-shading style that plagues video games ever since. Looking at the thumbnail, a normie could literally assume right is the anime. Certainly not left, though
Outside cel-shading the GC version also has other advantages like dynamic looking shadows instead of blob shadows, which helps this scene a lot
Why they couldnt get early vegeta's height right?
Not like Vegeta actually changed via aging, the art style just changed
He really grows into his hair.
It doesn't fit with the background. Which is black in this case so it kinda fits kek. I don't think it looks convincing enough. It's subjective i guess.
Lightning and shadow are even better on HD versions.
It looks pretty good. Also changes on line thickness is one of the main things that gives manga its distinctive looks.
Never understood how they tricked gaymers into believing thick black outlines and 3 polygon character models look like anime
wow shit that is bad huh?
>that OST
Budokai 1 is what got me into DBZ. It does a fantastic job telling the story. I remember hearing the development time was absurd just becsuse of the cutscenes. Few DBZ games capture the pure SOUL of Budokai 1. The Legacy of Goku series comes close. I even love the real shitty first entry.
I had this on PS2 back on release and had absolutely zero idea it ever released on GameCube along with the sequel apparently. Wild.
I agree, the cel shading technique they used here is better than anything they used afterwards, wonder why that is?
Apparently this version only runs at 30fps compared to PS2’s 60fps so it seems the greatly tuned visuals come at a cost so that might be why we didn’t see this become the standard for the rest or tenkaichi.
Check out the HD version anon it looks even better.
GameCube version isn't 30 frames
The HD version uses the ugly PS2 models without cel shading
This game looks really fricking good on a CRT, I miss when they actually put effort into the cut scenes instead of just lazy text boxes in the other budokai games
What makes this and especially the original PS2/GC version such a gem is the music
People might say it lacks gameplay depth but the tournament and just unlocking new skills for different characters is very addictive and a simple but great gameplay loop
