This is the most overrated game I've ever fricking played.

This is the most overrated game I've ever fricking played. For 20 years people have been telling me it's superior to Mario 64 and one of the best games ever made. What the frick? The movement is utter garbage, and any platforming in it feels awful to do. It takes ages to get anywhere, the hub is overly large and complicated to navigate, and that half-hour quiz at the end isn't cute or funny, it's just annoying.

I genuinely don't get it. And it's not an age thing, either: I can play Mario 64 any day and it's still fun. Spyro came out the same damn year, and that's a great game. But this shit is just obnoxious. How far has nostalgia gone to painting Banjo's reputation?

Incidentally, I played Yooka-Laylee after this, and I genuinely found that game more fun. I don't get where the hate comes from.

It's really not, at all. Stopped reading right there

They literally have a fast-travel system for it. If your hub requires a fast-travel warp, it's too fricking big.

In Mario 64, going from the entrance of the castle to Tick Tock Clock, one of the last levels, takes about 25 seconds. And that's a casual walk, without doing any advanced movement tricks.

In Banjo, going from the entrance of the lair to Mad Monster Mansion takes a minute and 10 seconds, and that's going as fast as I can, and using the cauldron. Getting to Click Clock Wood or Rusty Bucket Bay would take even longer.

        >If your hub requires a fast-travel warp, it's too fricking big.
It has like two of them, and they're clearly rewards for exploring the lair over being a legitimate shortcut. You're acting as if Banjo can just teleport anywhere using a map.

        > movement is utter garbage, and any platforming in it feels awful to do

Movement is not and has NEVER been something that is praised about Banjo-Kazooie. The bear game is NOT a platformer, it just has platforming IN it in little small ways just to get around. The amount of actual spots when the game asks you to do difficult platforming is very rare. You hear "Banjo is like Mario, but better" and you instantly think they're talking about platforming—They are not. Banjo has literally completely different design philosophy to Mario. It's an ADVENTURE game primarily, not a platformer primarily like Mario is. It is, admittedly, disappointing that the bear sucks ass to control, but this is also compensated for in the gameplay by Banjo being far, far less of a platformer. Movement IS trash but it's also not fair to judge Banjo on failing to be something it was never trying to be. People who call Banjo a platformer are dumb.

        >Banjo, going from the entrance of the lair to Mad Monster Mansion takes a minute and 10 seconds

Which is a you problem, my guy. If you're unironically complaining about a minute and a half of lost time, you have your priorities way the frick out of whack

        >The amount of actual spots when the game asks you to do difficult platforming is very rare.
The entire second half of the game is that, what the frick?

      >The amount of actual spots when the game asks you to do difficult platforming is very rare.
Horseshit. Click Clock Wood is structured entirely around its shittastic platforming, asking you to climb up that damn tree over and over again, and it's not fun. It feels atrocious. Make no mistake: there ARE plenty of platforming challenges in the game. Fans may not consider it a "platformer", and there may be more puzzles/minigames than there is actual platforming, but you still DO platform a lot in the game, and it never feels right. Especially when they constantly ask you to do that backflip to get to high areas, which is probably the stiffest jump move I've seen outside of Bubsy 3D.

Also, any instance where the game asks you to fly (which you, again, do a LOT of) also isn't fun. It's way too slow, damn near impossible to dodge projectiles, and killing those snowmen is ridiculously precise. So that's also a knock against its movement, and yet another thing Spyro excels at in comparison.
      >If you're unironically complaining about a minute and a half of lost time, you have your priorities way the frick out of whack
That minute and a half of lost time adds up over the course of an entire playthrough. In Mario, the next level is a hop skip and a jump away. In Banjo, the next level can take SEVERAL MINUTES just to find, let alone unlock, and if you're backtracking back and forth to get Jiggies you missed on the first run, that can easily add up to a solid HOUR of just the hub wasting your time.

        >any instance where the game asks you to fly

Flying and swimming controls are pretty garbage until you learn you can hold R to turn sharp, which only the Xbox version ever tells you. Huge flaw imo

Idk what to say it's not like your views of the game wasting your time are wrong persay, but I also think it's telling that you choose to view exploration as "wasting time". Sure it can be a bit too much sometimes, but figuring stuff like this out and having a bit of an adventure are sort of the point. It's not SUPPOSED to be as convenient as humanly possible. You aren't MEANT to be handheld after Mumbo's Mountain, you're meant to figure shit out. The hub isn't JUST a place to access other levels in. Wandering around its many labyrinthine corridors is intended to be part of the fun.

I think your mental framing is off, you view it as time-wasting because you didn't play this game FOR the exploration aspects. So it's fair you don't like it, it doesn't cater to what you want. And saying the game isn't perfect and has meandering elements to it are fair and true. The warp cauldrons system is fricking trash. But idk, you're not even wrong really but a lot of what you're saying is coming from a place of Banjo's design philosophy just not meshing with what you expect or personally wanted from it

        >collect all the golden turds "gameplay"

Bad collectathons make you collect golden turds. Good ones just use collectables as a thinly veiled excuse to explore and do cool shit

          >Wandering around its many labyrinthine corridors is intended to be part of the fun.
But that's exactly my point. What exactly are you finding so compelling about Grunty's Lair? I mean, I GUESS there are one or two puzzles needed to access new areas, that's fine, and I GUESS there are a small handful of Jiggies that can only be found in the hub, but it's not as if Grunty's Lair is a level unto itself. It's not as compact and dense with things to find as Mario 64, nor is it filled with just as many collectibles and challenges as a normal level would have as the Spyro games do. 90% of the time spent in Grunty's Lair is just walking back and forth across empty areas that you've already seen before. Is it just "immersive"? Maybe if you're a child. I'm onboard with exploration, and adventure, and if it means I'm always discovering new things, but that's only if I'm not constantly going back and forth over the same shit I've already found, and not finding anything new. And on repeat playthroughs, that gets even more frustrating, because that feeling of discovery is gone.

Banjo as a game doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. If it's an adventure game, then there's too much crappy platforming and flying (I knew you could make sharp turns, since I played on Xbox, and it's still janky as hell). It's not doing a good job of what it's "trying" to be or do. If Rare wanted to make an adventure game, they shouldn't have filled it with so many platforming challenges that play like shit. I could go on and mention even more things about the game that piss me off, such as needing to go back to Mumbo every single shitty fricking time I want to transform, or Rusty Bucket Bay having some of the worst level design I've ever seen, or the bullshit final boss, but I think you get it by now.

I'm going to go play Jak & Daxter to cleanse my palette. Now THAT game is a masterpiece.

Have you played the Donkey Kong Country games? They have a similar tone and atmosphere (especially DKC3), but they're more linear and the collecting is optional. Most people compare them to the Crash Bandicoot games even though they are made by Rare. I would say play the Donkey Kong Country games first, then come back to Banjo, and if you're still not enjoying it then skip to DKCR for the Wii. It also contains some elements from Banjo, but again, they are optional.

You might like Grunty's Revenge for GBA. It's like a miniature Banjo game, it has most of the same elements from the N64 games but scaled down so it doesn't take as long to play through. There's also the racing spin-off Banjo-Pilot and of course Diddy Kong Racing for N64 where Banjo originated. If you don't like B-K though you're probably going to hate DK64 and Tooie. Bigger worlds was a huge selling point for games back in those days, that's part of what made the collectathons so popular to begin with.

Hm... I forgot to mention both DK64 and Tooie did add warp pads that make it easier to navigate larger areas. That tends to help a bit. I would say the movement in DK64 is maybe slightly smoother too but it's mostly the same really. DK's roll is faster and stronger than Banjo's and some characters like Diddy and Lanky are a lot faster. Diddy's jetpack is a lot worse than the flight pad though and it's timed. There's more actual boss battles and stuff, so I guess that's cool. DK Island is maybe slightly smaller and more open than Grunty's Lair but Isle O' Hags in Tooie is huge, but again the warp system makes it easier to navigate.

Most of the N64's big games were big only because they were marketed as such. This unfortunately led to some interesting and fun games flying under the radar (games like body harvest, rocket robot on wheels, space station silicon valley which was basically intentionally sabotaged by nintendo) but banjo kazooie being from a second party dev, polished (but shitty to play) got a shit ton of marketing. Nintendo gave away millions of VHS tapes advertising it. It's one of those games that lots of people play, they like superficial things like graphics or music about it, but man the game play is tedious. When you break it down the levels are blatant theme parks with mediocre attractions built to waste your time and every level is like this. The moment to moment gameplay really sucks in it, movement does feel like shit and almost every challenge is basically done automatically for you.

I think it's a bad game, but a polished one. I haven't seen any convincing arguments for it being super good and deep and intelligently designed and mechanically rich...probably because it's not. But I have seen its biggest fans argue it's not a platformer so shouldn't be judged as such - said fans also said zelda is an fps because it has first person aiming lol.

Yeah sorry you got scammed by overhyped games on a console with very few games. There's good stuff there like Goemon, but not Banjo. Both Banjo's are terrible.

This is why Tooie is the real game and Kazooie is the beta.

    >goes all in on scope and adds world shortcuts, pads and silos to compensate
    >focus on adventure aspects but tightening up the platforming
    >faster action, precise animation, smoother controls
    >you can move out of a dash attack
    >you can move out of a roll
    >,you can adjust the angle out of a ratatatat which is a vast improvement over the bear swipe
    >hold a ground pound in place
    >homing eggs of all kinds
    >can move more out of a backflip
    >roll is faster
    >more air maneuverability
    >things like banjos backpack hop and kazooie's general speed and gliding
    >other fun modes to balance out the gameplay like dodgems, the stoneys, shooter sections
    >thousands more npcs, funnier dialogue, more intricate worlds
    >based multiplayer, and fun extras like bottles revenge or stop n swop 2
