Game play is objectively better, but story, lore, and characters are very mid.

I'm pretty sure you're required to buy the expansions in GW2 so you can unlock shit like mounts and end game professions.

Most GW2 players were GW1 veterans and they kept the game alive for twice the lifespan of GW1. It's pretty clear people shitting on GW2 are a minority of haters.
GW1 was a different type of games, a type of games that was almost never made again. There must be a reason for that. It's not what most people want.
And I was a fan of that type of games, I was hyped for Hellgate:London mostly because I wanted a new game using the GW formula.
My bro, people stopped playing 1 only because Anet hyped 2 to hell and back and put 1 on maintenance mode when 2 released.

Sorry anon but that's a copium post. Most GW2 are not GW1 players, they're a completely different demographic that were pulled in post GW2 launch. The population of GW1 couldn't even hold a candle to GW2's population in terms of sheer numbers so that assumption is completely wrong.

Most GW2 players today are not GW1 players anymore, especially since it was added on Steam but at the start and for several years, it was pretty clearly mostly veterans and most of them used their GW1 ingame title. I seethed quite a bit looking at all those GWAMM during world bosses.
Also a lot of guilds came directly from GW1 too, the 3 in my alliance where formed in GW1 for example.

All you've done is give anecdotes about GW1 vets being the majority of GW2 players.
MMO players are hardcore achievement hunters. Not all of them played GW1 during current, hell, they prolly paid GW2 currency to get their GW1 accounts boosted so they could get those titles.
GW1 sold 6 million copies. GW2 has 16 million accounts. That's not most GW1 players keeping GW2 afloat. GW2 definitely failed to keep a high retention rate of GW1 players.
I'll be honest, I've never known why anyone would play GW2 for so long. The armour mogs suck, the gameplay has hardly been innovated since release, basic barber shop customisation is locked behind gems, ANet doesnt know what to do with their gameplay loops, the plot is awful, archaic gameplay locked like certain seasons being unplayable.
The game just feels like a hot mess and they need to streamline a lot of this.
I dig the plant people aesthetic and occasionally role up a character to take through the original and HoT, but then the story takes a massive nose dive in quality so I fuck off for a year or two. Rinse and repeat.

Because its story is fucking atrocious and you are forced not only to do it to get all the shit, but do gay fucking achievements in the story instances which are incredibly dull and drag on for way too long.
Also it peaked with HoT entirely as far as design goes, mounts are shit additions and PoF zones are worse for having them. Zones themselves are just there, with barely any meta events worth a notice, and rewards are so fucking shit you are pretty much forced to grind one HoT zone which is the only one in the entire game that awards you with armor that can select any stats you want.

Gw2 base game was decent but the monetization and expansions are awful. The game basically tries to inconvenience you as much as possible if you don't pay.

This, the gameplay is phenomenally shit. They wanted to make Monster Hunter but with MMO tab targetting and without the fucking weight behind attacks, moving, fucking everything. There are two kinds of MMO players.
The anti social solo player virgin who plays themepark MMOs. Vertical progression. Groupfinder. No risk, no reward gameplay. Skinnerbox grinder with poopsocket endgame.
The PvP chad who plays sandbox MMOs. Horizontal progression. Teamplay. Making friends. High risk, high reward. Winner takes it all. The PvP is the endgame.
The problem with GW2 is that it's neither a true PvE or PvP MMORPG. It tries to be friends with both sides, making nobody happy in the end.

The heart of thorns zones felt like massive metroidvania jumping puzzles, I wish the PoF maps were as fun.
