                >any other recommendations from zelda series?
Quirky NPCs are in just about every Zelda game but whether they're charming or memorable depends on the game.

MM and WW both have a lot of really good ones. TP has a couple but most of the NPCs in that game are honestly forgettable, same with SS. BotW has some good ones, and TotK adds a few more on top of BotW.

The best you can do is just play the games for yourself.

There's tons of room for improvement. I wish OoT had genuinely hard puzzles that made more use of items as functionality rather than quizzing you on their functions. I wish the combat was a bit more demanding, mostly in that I wish the enemy design were more challenging (though just more use of the harder enemies would be nice). I wish it ran at a higher and more stable framerate, though thankfully that's accomplishable now if you DIY it. I wish Hyrule Field had more of a gameplay purpose, though it has more than some people will pretend.
HOWEVER, even with all its issues, zero of the future games managed to directly address them without giving up something else that OoT did fantastically. Each future 3D Zelda tried to make combat more elaborate but dropped the ball on the challenge level of enemies in general, and on the use of the game's more challenging enemies. None of the future games really step up on making puzzles with great solutions and uses for your items- BotW tries to at least present interesting puzzle scenarios, but most shrines stand entirely on their own and do not build on any concept another establishes, at least not to a large degree, nor do they fit into coherent themes.
The point is OoT isn't perfect, it just happens to have the most well-rounded core and a few exceptional attributes that other games struggle to replicate while ALSO improving on its flaws.

            >most shrines stand entirely on their own and do not build on any concept another establishes, at least not to a large degree, nor do they fit into coherent themes.
while botw/totk have far MORE puzzles than other zelda games, with a lot of them being more interesting/engaging, your point is unfortunately very valid. i think it stems from them trying to sprinkle "the whole experience" in every direction of the map. while that design decision does have its merits for certain players, others (more hardcore and completionist types) find it somewhat lacking.
            >Each future 3D Zelda
            >OoT isn't perfect, it just happens to have the most well-rounded core
every mainline zelda game has had its own gimmick that sets it apart from its predecessors. oot's was simply the fact that it was 3d, and as such it feels the "cleanest" in comparison to others. ww, tp, ss, etc all have some dumb bullshit like sailing, wolf shit, waggle shit, etc. i can certainly understand this aspect of oot praise when comparing zeldas. however, that doesnt make oot inherently a better game (or perfect game in general, moron oot zealots). by all means love it, but its moronic to pretend that it has no flaws. if you can recognize that it has flaws, has definitely aged, and isnt "the bestest, most perfect game ever made", then you arent an oot zealot, just a fan.

Oh don't get me wrong, I am also firmly in the camp that OoT is absolutely amazing. I've been called a zealot, verbatim, more than once, just for not agreeing with the standard criticisms with enough vigor. I just think there's a je ne sais quoi to it that makes it hard for me to put my back into critiquing. I can see a lot of ways to improve it, but I don't think any of them demand that improvement enough that they ought to seriously ding its score. Bar maybe the FPS.
Thanks for not calling me a zealot regardless.

its certainly still playable and i would never say that somebody isnt entitled to enjoying it or having fond memories. however, i firmly believe that it has aged poorly. while it was a landmark achievement at the time, the mere novelty of 3d has long since worn off, and literally every single aspect/system of it has been improved upon since then by some other work. people normally familiar with more modern sorts of games immediately recognize it as stiff, even janky, and simplistic. "just look up" is no longer a novel idea for a "puzzle". clunky/tedious menuing is a drag. waiting for chests is a drag. combat is a massive drag, ESPECIALLY compared to other sorts of enemy/combat that we have today. it may have some solid design elements and idea, but execution of them has far been surpassed and refined since then, and thats just a simple fact.

by all means have it be your favorite game, but calling it "best game ever made" or "absolutely flawless" is just willfully ignorant and disingenuous shitposting of a zealot. those of us that are reasonable on the matter are simply asking the zealots to stfu and understand that fact by getting the dialogue right.

Now you're getting into territory I can't quite agree with. A game ages poorly when its ideas become less common after its initial release. The core of OoT is still a big influence on action-adventure games (and, in some ways, basic 3D navigation) today, so as a whole I can't say in good faith that it fits that qualifier.
All the PARTS of the game you mentioned have indeed aged poorly. Individual systems and concepts that we've found outright better ways to do over the years are undeniable. But the big picture of the game isn't totally out of place within the context of more modern game design, even if it isn't a perfect match.

                >A game ages poorly when its ideas become less common after its initial release
thats a moronic definition. normal people consider a game has "aged" when its features have been refined or surpassed by later products. for example, while there is a difference between visual style and graphics, oot is objectively very primitive in 3d rendering and visual textures. it has aged rather poorly because the gap in what can be considered a quality product is so noticeably great. has super mario world aged poorly? no, because it still delivers a high quality experience for the medium. has the original nes mario aged poorly? i dont know so much about "poorly", but it has objectively aged and been surpassed in all conceivable ways. oot has aged poorly, like most of the n64.
                >The core of OoT is still a big influence
influence and nostalgia are not inherent characteristics of a product. dont kid yourself. "good at the time" or "cutting edge at the time" are irrelevant. the musket was cutting edge at the time, but no rational person would consider it "the greatest weapon of all time, 100% flawless". the ford model T was cutting edge at the time, but no rational person would consider it "the greatest car of all time, 100% flawless"
                >All the PARTS of the game you mentioned
                >But the big picture of the game
there doesnt need to be an equivalent game that "does everything oot does, but better, all at at the same time". i will never try to name a title worthy of "greatest game ever, 100% flawless" in order to "replace" oot. all im saying is that it its fricking moronic, willfully ignorant, and at best disingenuous, to consider it as such when it is so objectively flawed and aged. you cant argue "intended design" when we're talking about actual execution and end result of product. we're talking about how its made, not whether anyone likes it. i would say that mario world is a great game within its medium of 2d platformer. i struggle to think of any critical issues that a player might encounter, even when considering modern standards/experiences. i think it holds up wonderfully. it does what it sets out to do, and delivers on it quite well. is it perfect? no. are there some valid critiques to be had? sure. but anything that REALLY hinder it? i dont think so. meanwhile, oot IMMEDIATELY stands out among 3d gaming as a primitive entry. can you still enjoy it? absolutely. but that doesnt mean that it hasnt aged.

BotW has 97 with 117 reviews. That was 7 years ago.

Do get how this works you dumb fricking moron?

BotW has more 10/10s than any game on metacritic.

You seem to be unable to cope with how acclaimed and successful BotW and TotK are. The seethe is eternal. I can't wait for the next Zelda masterpiece so I can watch this board fart blood forever.

BotW has more 10/10s than any game on metacritic.

I would also add that ALLTP was the best game I ever played in 1992.
OoT was the best game I ever played in 1998.
BotW was the best game I ever played in 2017.
TotK was the best game I ever played in 2023.

Nintendo have been consistently making the best games in the world for me for 40 years straight. Feels good.

Yeah you said this about BotW 8 years ago. Both BotW and TotK are two of the best games ever made. It's honestly excruciating going back to older 3D Zelda games. You have to view them through a lens of

      >well I guess they were good for their time

No fricking way would any of that outdated, restrictive, antiquated game design be acceptable now.

OoT's number is bigger on Metacritic is bigger than BotW, thus it scored bettef. That's how it works based on the OP's logic.

ToTK wasn't good. 1 year later and most people now agree it was a disappointment. It killed the classic formula, it killed the lore and even Reddit and Twitter now despise it. The next Zelda won't be quite as successful thanks to Nintendo's frickup with that one.
Anyways, everyone nowadays also agrees that OoT didn't age well and that it no longer deserves those review scores in the modern era. MM & ALTTP are the true kings of the franchise.

BOTW killed the classic formula. TOTK at least tried something fun.
