Yeah, nuclear waste markings have actually given a lot of work to a lot of semioticians. It's a fascinating subject, really.
Fucking Sebeok proposed a creation of a religion solely for the purpose of maintaining knowledge of the dangers associated with nuclear waste sites.
The idea of using non-functional architecture seems really cool to me. The idea of figuring out how to make a place feel repulsive to people for thousands of years to come is fascinating.

Just sic modern artists and architects on it, they'll have it done in no time.

That is actually a good point, now that I think about it.
But the problem is that the message must remain clear to cultures - maybe even different species - tens or hundreds of thousands of years in the future.
And while so much of modern art is actually obsessed with being ugly, they rarely do it in a way that would be "timeless".

But I think it is actually an unsolvable problem. The mere EXISTENCE of a mark will probably always invite the desire to fucking dig it out.

I genuinely think that in the long term, it would be best to not mark the places at all and just bet on the low probability of it being discovered accidentally.

      > creation of a religion
God I hate academics. What an immediately dumb proposal. "Let's make a religion that requires people genuinely believe in it in order to achieve its aim, but the belief in it is dependent on wider society collapsing to such a degree that universal understanding of the content disappears." You would have to lock people in a Truman show bubble around the site and start early, hoping even then that they accept the religion and never go investigating. Then keep that up for tens of thousands of years. All for what? So a few hundred people don't get radiation sickness?

I bet the university think tank of garden gnomes and undergrads felt so sophisticated pontificating on the world guardianship religion they would create as if they themselves were the arms of the minutes to midnight clock.

Thank you for that nice and thick shower of insecurity.
But the reason why they proposed religion is actually very simple:
Religions have proven to be the most stable and reliable way to store and progatage knowledge in human history. In fact that is why they exist in the first place. 2/3rds of the planet still knows lessons and messages that were invented by proto-canaanite people around 4-7 thousands yeas B.C., and it is unlikely that those messages will be forgotten any time soon in the upcoming millenia. That is a fact.

As for "for what" - the issue here is that that this shit is here to stay. So if it leaks and contaminates larger area (and we are produce quite a lot of this shit, so mishandling could contaminate a very large area), that area will stay contaminated for a very long time.
And since the hypothetical future culture would not know what radiation is, they would have no clue what just happened.

Thousands of miles of land contaminated for few centuries without people even knowing what's wrong could add up.

And you really need to cope with the fact that academia exists in some healthier fashion, this is pretty fucking sad.

The post that explains the logic of that particular academic reasoning - that is where you draw the line. That is just too much. Nobody dares to imply he knows something that you don't, that is absolutely the worst.

I didn't say that I like the other posts. I said that your posts are the worst. Your failure to understand this reflects a very polar world view, where you either hold position or the other, instead of criticizing both.

                >Your failure to understand this
I know that this is exactly the thing that scares you the most in this world, but:
I understand this better than you do. And that is why I am "the worst" to you. You really desperately want to pretend that you are above this, but the reality is - it's just me that really drives you mad, because it's just me that makes you realize limitations of your own competency. Because the truth is - those other posts are just obviously really fucking stupid. That is not a threat, that is a comfort to your little insecure brain.
You aren't able to admit that, but it is the reason why we are having this exchange. That is why it is going to be only me that you'll really complain about. My existence hurts you, while those other guys are merely inconvenient.

And I have to admit, it's fucking hilarious. Especially how you are trying to pretend that you are above those other guys, but immeditely end up proving you are exactly the same piece of insecure shit.

Can you stop for a second and think about what you are saying?
Do you not realize that you just immediately devolved into saying: "NO YOU CAN'T BE RIGHT, IT'S NOT POSSIBLE, ENTIRE FUCKING ACADEMIA HAS TO BE WRONG NO SHUT UP IT'S NOT POSSIBLE THAT YOU KNOW SOMETHING I DON'T NOOOOOOOO!"

Can you actually stop making up excuses for ten seconds?
And yeah, academia isn't a monolith. But then again - to be able to undertand what academia is, you'd need to be able to not burst our crying and screaming every time it is even lightly mentioned.

You literally can't fucking control your insecurity for long enough to even start addressing this issue. That is the problem. You piss yourself when it's mentioned, pre-emtively start screeching excuses why you won't even for a second entertain the subject in your mind.

That is why I look down on you. That and only that. The insane, pathetic endless defense you set up at the mere MENTION of the subject matter.

And for the record, you are very wrong. I am actually a lingust - the fact that I started this shitstorm by mentioning anecdote from semiotics should have given that away, honestly. I do mostly quanti-linguistics, in fact I used to studio molecular b. and got into GL through biosemiotics.
But then again - you don't know what general linguistic are, becaus you piss yourself when it's merely mentioned. And that is the problem.

Until you learn to control that obsessive fear of anything intellectual, you are going to be mocked a lot in your life.
Because people like to pick up on such obvious and cringeworthy displays of weakness, that is how things work.

          >It was because back then they were predicting that nuclear apocalypse and they imagined that they'd have to sequester the knowledge of nuclear physics away from the general population if humanity proved stupid and irresponsible enough
Actually, none of this is true. Nuclear waste semiotics are something that has really been addressed since late 80's.
The message in OP's picture, which one one of the very first major impulses for studies into this subject, is from 1993.

The problem always was exclusively about EXTREMELY long time horizons, as nuclear waste will remain extremely dangerous for tens of thousands of years. So the task was how to communicate danger across any time span or cultural distance, in case of the knowledge being lost.
Nobody planned to "safeguard" nuclear physics from the population in 1993, I can fucking assure you of that.

No one's reading all that nonsense.

not for a goof, because of some vague threat of nuclear proliferation (as in, some terrorist breaks into the lab and steals some plutonium or whatnot.)

since you want to be a pedantic twat, are you arguing that there is no chain of reprocessing that takes uranium / thorium as an input? the french have been doing this in le havre for decades. it's proven technology. at the end of the reprocessing cycle the 'waste' has roughly a halflife of roughly a century.

meanwhile in the US we're still arguing about that mountain in nevada to store all our waste, basically forever.

Yes, I know. First of all those caskets are over-engineered as fuck. So the volume is somewhat overstated, as small as it already it. Secondly, current mainstream reactor designs, due to using solid fuel, only end up using 1% of the fuel before the rods have to be replaced. Otherwise rods get filled with xenon (neutron poison) and crack. There are reprocessing facilities that then recycle that into new rods. Recycling is not very widespread though, because it's just not needed: The fuel is cheap as fuck compared to everything else, and waste is not actually a problem right now. But yes, if we ever need it, the waste fuel rods are just fuel waiting to get reprocessed.
On the other hand, with the widely memed liquid salt reactors, because the fuel is liquid, the xenon (and other byproducts) can be easily separated, so all the fuel is used. Also the refueling can happen without any reactor downtime. And of course the high level nuclear waste is 99% less.

i'm not even remotely wrong anon, look it up.

religion is adopted organically, you can't force it like a forced meme

          >religion is adopted organically, you can't force it like a forced meme
I think a lot of examples of state-enforced religions would suggest otherwise.
For an example, what you and 99% of Japan think is "Shinto", and think it to be a historic religion, is basically almost entirely an idea of one guy from mid 19th' century that was then readopted actively by the state in early 20th.
So yeah, religions can be pushed succesfully, if you are smart, or persistent about it.

But sure. For once, this was a brainstorming project, and only one of the ideas. Second of all, I did simplify it when I said "make a religion", the proposition was a bit more complex, it was about creating a mythological narrative that could be easily integrated into religious practices... which is how religions are born, but obviously, it's a more nuanced and more realistic plan - but still one that could very well fail.

Hell, I presented it as an interesting oddity. It's not a stupid idea, but it's not a very realistic one either.

I am convinced 99% of the hype about the dangers of nuclear is conventional energy & renewables propaganda. Nobody higher up ever gives a single shit about anythng else but when it comes to nuclear waste "OMG we have to engineer a system of symbols and bespoke religion to keep people away from it for A GAJILLION YEARS after some kind of society-annihilating event that may or may not happen or it isnt ready", it's bullshit. Half of them wont even believe smog is bad right now, in front of them, but they believe in million-year-futureproofed supersarcophagi with language-transcending multilayered warning perimeters? fuck off

Not to mention that a properly developed nuclear industry will create energy abundance to the point where it becomes viable do widespread advanced recycling: Such as, being able to treat trash as ore and breaking it down to its constituent materials in an almost arbitrary manner. Today we can't do that because not enough energy. Even ridiculous shit like converting CO2 to fuel starts to sound not as retarded as you increase energy abundance. Almost all of our economic and environmental problems stem from energy austerity. Even shit you wouldn't think has much to do with it. We can't afford to account for our trash because the lack of energy abundance. Renewables-only will drive energy costs even higher, the exact opposite of what we need. Not to mention dogshit energy density of renewables per material used not helping things at all.

Actually, if there is going to be anything else coming out of it is a matter of being seen, but yeah - it's unlikely that it will have major impact.

It was most interesting just as a puzzle. It is quite interesting to study human semiotic universal and extremely long-distance communication... It was also actually just a small sub-project.
All of this was done as a side project of the GHS hazard sign project, paid for by the UN. Which was an attempt to create a universal standard for marking environmental hazards, basically a world-wide norm collection for how things like radiation, biohazard, and other warning labels should look.
And since they already had a bunch of semioticians hire to do that, this was a challenge they gave them that caught on.

Those "Cheap" solar panels only last like 10 years and barely produce more energy over that time than it takes to create them in the first place. Plus you need to install tens of thousands of acres of solar panels to get enough power for an entire city, not to mention you need to create and install batteries to store the power generated by the solar panels. All of this stuff also needs to be recycled or destroyed once their useful lifetime runs out.
Meanwhile you can power an entire city of millions for years with the amount of uranium that can fit inside the bed of a small pickup truck. When that uranium is no longer useful for power generation, you can reconstitute it into something that is again, either for other types of power generation or less intensive applications like medical imaging.
Its also not "gazillions" of dollars, its hundreds of millions. How many solar panels do you need, each producing an average of 400-600 watts, to replace a single nuclear power plant that generates more than a gigawatt, some of them nearly 4 gigawatts?

            >you need to add the battery storage on as a cost.
Actually - there is no storage solution to begin with. The reality is that you can't depend on wind or solar exclusively with our current tech, you ALWAYS have another, more stable power source at the core of your network, and you only use solar/wind and usually even hydroelectric power to supplement it.

When there are larger networks that claim to live off amost entirely renewable sources, what they mean is that they end up ultimately exporting as much power as they end up importing. But it does not mean that they actually consume only power from those sources. They absolutely, 100% rely on the fact that they are connected into a larger international network that has nuclear or combustion plants that will be able to take over.
And that can be turned off if the conditions are good and the renewable happens to produce more than is currently needed.

We don't actually have storage tech that would be efficient enough to make pure renewables viable. They can ONLY exist thanks to another production of stable power sources.

The discussion is really fucked now, and a LOT of the institutions and player with their hands on the pulse are making really fucking stupid decisions that will bite us in the ass, yes.

Green Deal is a very poorly thought out solution for addressing the fossile fuel crisis. It's not wrong to look into ways to lessen - and maybe one day remove our dependency on fossiles. In fact that is absolutely what we need to do. Fossiles are awful, literally the biggest cause of premature deaths in the world FUCKING NONE and yeah, they will run out anyway, so if we don't lessen our dependency, as they will run out, people in control of the last remaining sources will ABSOLUTELY fuck everyone else. So we need alternatives, and green energy is one of the possible tools in our arsenal.

But it's not a SOLUTION. It's just a tool that could be implemented as a part of larger solution.
Except... in an attempt to motivate people to look into it more, we have accidentally created a cult around it, that came to the conclusion that IS THE SOLUTION and that we are morally obligated to not look into anything else. And gave massive opportunities to opportunists who want to take advantage of this misconception.

And that is what is fucking up over. I'm sure it won't be the end of the world, but it sure as hell will costs us far more than was necessary.

I don't think that was that guy's problem, as he openly acknowledged the unreliability of solar energy with saying "So just use coal at night, I don't care."

It does feature a scene of teenagers bullying another student, but it's not really framed as sexual abuse which chuds are known for, they just shove her off the chair and then beat her as she lies down on the floor. Her friend watches it in terror and is paralyzed by fear when she sees it, she does not interfere. Their friendship is terminated over that because she notices her doing nothing.

a full nuclear exchange would reset the country's demographics by 200 years and turn the United States back into a majority white nation, literally now downsides

Americans are truly unique. Ask person of literally any other notable nation on earth how does he feel about his nation collapsing/balkanizing/getting into nuclear war etc, and he will just tell you to fuck off, but ask American about same thing and can possibly get aroused by imagining that.
This very interesting cultural phenomena can be seen in post-apocalypse being quintessential American genre. Fallout is a prime example, unlike dismal rendition of post-nuclear world from elsewhere it is cheerful and optimistic like an anticipation of new, better life.
I can't say for sure why are they like this, probably a combination on founding culture based on anarchic frontier with no presence of civilization, and major part of original population stock being various fundamentalist obscurantist sects who were not welcome in Europe and sought better lie elsewhere.

I think the 3000 cycles is because the ship reactor will kill the Replika on board, I saw someone suggest that Replika's would be more susceptible to the radiation than Gresalts would be. Outside of Elster's circumstances I'm not sure if there's any other indication for how long Replika's are supposed to last. Although it's still probably much less than a human lifespan.

          >No, it uses statistical data for it's modeling. There is no meaningful hypothesis at all.
And for testing. The FUCK are you on about?

          >moron, AI speech was YOUR example of what it could be applied to, and I explained that you were stupid and how it's actually done.
I asked you a very simple question you pathetic coward.
What do you think quanti-linguistics means. The fact that you are too afarid to answer this simple question tells me EVERYTHING I need to know.
You have NO clue what it means.

            >A post by a child who thought copy-pasting a line from the first research paper he came across is going to "prove" he is an expert, and failed to realize that three of the four words you copied are shit every highschooler knows,
I was describing the fucking picture. See this is what I mean, you fucking tumors of academia can't just read and understand a simple concept.
            >And for testing.
            There is nothing to test.
            >I asked you a very simple question you pathetic coward.
And I told you to eat shit lmao. You are an expert in gayry with a useless meme degree, screaming at people who do actual work for having the audacity to insult your grift.

And he is literally unable to answer that question. This isn't a problem of not listenting.
It's a problem of clear, objective evidence of him being full of shit.

Mate. You're in a virtual dick-swinging competition on Ganker. You've already lost. Lost twice since you're posting your timezone and actual IRL surroundings.

              >I was describing the fucking picture.
Oh, sorry about that, I genuinely wasn't payign attention.
Yeah, it's a tissue sample. Specifically a structurally accurate but vat-grown tissue sample - again do you seriously think I don't know what organoids are? What the fuck do you think you are proving by posting a picture of a tissue and the words "tissue of a glandual cancer" again?

Guess what? I can fucking do that as well.
The fact that you thought that ANY of this fucking proves anything is god damn joke.
              >There is nothing to test.
This is the second time you failed to tell me what quanti-linguistics are, kid.

              >And I told you to eat shit lmao.
You really are getting ABSOLUTELY DESPERATE at this point, aren't you?

Since the fucking leitmotif of this discussion is you not knowing what is going on and me having to explain it, let's do that once more.

You can't tell me what quanti-linguistics are because you had NO CLUE what it means, but that did not stop you from talking shit about it, because you'll say literally ANYTHING your insecurity tells you to say.

Now, when I ask you this question, it's a catch 22 situation. You could google it, but if you did that, it would clearly prove that your previous claims about it were completely wrong and baseless. By lying about it earlier, you can't answer now.
And that is why you are too afraid to answer this question - there is no way for you to do it without proving yourself full of shit.

Isn't this fun? Isn't it fun how every time you say something, I can fucking break you down to your retarded, terrified, child-like constituents?

Isn't it scary that I know what is going on in your head better than you do?
              How does that feel, child?
That you are not only stupid - you are stupid, predictable, and even a random stranger that talked to you for an hour can discet you like this, know what you are doing better than you do.

I'm not suprised you are this fucking scared, child.
              But it is FUCKING. PATHETIC.

And I guess that really is the conclusion to this discussion.
You can tell exactly where this poor soul snapped, and realized how screwed he is, and just completely lost it.

              This is fucking poetry.
Going from "Yeah actually I'm a cancer researcher, I'm totally well informed and sophisticated" to this, it's an amazing journey.

Well, I had a lot of fun with this, it's not every day you can see a human being completely break like this.

There was a discussion on the legality of Bioresonance a few threads ago. I had actually missed this document on my first playthrough but it shows that just possibly having Bioresonance is an gulag-able offense.

They just put her to mining instead of developing her powers, so I would say it's something that they either don't want in people other than Replikas at all unless they're highly controlled, maybe from birth.

Nah, I'm incorrect. Actually, she was arrested for bioresonance while already inside the gualg for some unrelated reason. They're putting her under special monitoring because of the powers granted, but she wasn't put in the gulag in the first place because of it.
