This is just NSMB Wii/Wii U again. The most barebones, basic Mario Game you could imagine. It's also clearly aimed at the lowest common denominator normies that will play it in multiplayer. Turns out Mario Maker isn't a good replacement for real 2D entries so that's mostly what people like about it, mixed with the better presentation and how pokeshit is there to make every other switch exclusive look like a incredible piece of high art in comparison makes people be mostly positive about it even if deep down we all know it's just another 2D mario game.
Personally I'm just fine with the prospect that they aren't treating their 2D games like second class citizens anymore, this game and Metroid dread may not be the highest profile Nintendo releases but they do feel like a huge leap from anything that they could've made on a 3DS and I don't think most people were actually expecting that to happen.
SMM was never going to replace a traditional 2D game, as much as I love that nintendo gave us the tools to make this stuff ourselves it isn't nearly as curated of an experience as a traditional 2D Mario is. people just want to bing bong wahoo through generally easy levels, and SMM is more for the hardcore kaizo/romhack people than anything else

eh I can kind of understand it, having 3D camera control with 2 players can be kinda rough when sharing the screen, 3D world works specifically because camera angles are fixed for the most part.

The 2D Mario formula is 40 years old now. All possible ideas have been explored in endless Mario Maker levels and SMW Romhacks. There's only so many combinations of world biomes and powerup effects to explore, and Kaizo'ing everything only appeals to the niche minority. All they have left is gimmicks like transforming in to animals and more variations of "touch fuzzy get dizzy".
