This stopped me from buying a $1,200 gaming pc

Game streaming technology thread -- and discussion about the future of what this means for consumer tech.

I can play triple A games at 60 frames in full HD with no input lag whatsoever and even casual multiplayer games.

Why would anyone purchase a gaming computer when this shit works as well as it does? I can use my corebooted thinkpad and the only proprietary shit I have to deal with is their website and the games themselves. It just fricking works. On my old as frick corebooted thinkpad.

Why, literally why would you pay $600 for a GPU when you can use this for $10.00/mo and stream to devices you already own. Want something for the TV? Buy a shield and use it with this thing. Or just connect your thinkpad's display port to your TV.

Thinkpad doesn't even get hot and the fans barely run. I get more fan rpm when I play a 1080p video but with Geforce Now my fans barely spin. Don't have to worry about the power usage associated either. This is Stadia done right, and it's a shame more people don't know about it.

    (YOU) vill stream the slop

I know this is bait but I'll answer in good faith:

    1. With streaming, you don't own the hardware. You are totally at the mercy of Nvidia or whoever's rules and TOS. Also good luck if you want to do anything but gaming that requires high end hardware.

    2. You don't own the software. You only get to play what Nvidia decides they want to have on their platform, and forget about modding or doing any sort of customization.

    3. Game streaming has noticeable latency even under ideal conditions. Unless you have symmetric fiber and live a block away from the datacenter, there will be noticeable latency. Frick, even streaming over home ethernet LAN still has meaningful latency.

    4. No ability to play games without network access, or even just slight network quality degradation.

    5. Even if you max out the bitrate, there will still be compression artifacts.

    6. Game streaming datacenters tend to need maintenance frequently.

    7. The hardware you are actually provisioned will usually be worse that what is advertised. Do framerate tests on a "3080" server and you will get far worse frame rates than a real local 3080.

    8. Privacy. Probably don't even need to explain this one.

If you want to do anything beyond gaming that involves GPU processing, you're pretty much out of luck.

Can you actually play video games via streaming/renting GPU power? isn't that laggy as shit to have to play on a PC that's hundreds of miles away from you? I can understand for 3D rendering , but for real-time input where latency matters? I don't understand how.

yes. don't know what to tell you other than the technology now just allows it to work.

          >Why, literally why would you pay $600 for a GPU when you can use this for $10.00/mo and stream to devices you already own.
The experience is inferior both in terms of quality and in terms of actual functionality because of the increased input lag. Being "cheap" isn't a reason to use something that's below par in terms of quality. Subscriptions also suck ass, you keep on paying and over the years the sum you shovel into each company grows and grows yet you're never left with anything for the money spent, as soon as you stop you're left with nothing, no matter how much you actually spent. It also sucks that you don't actually have any control of your library, if whatever happens and the company you're paying decides a title has to disappear from the library for any reason whatsoever, you're fricked. Similarly you can't actually play anything you want, when you want it because you need to wait for them to add shit to their service and need to cross your fingers and hope that whatever you want to play is popular enough to be added at all.

          >no noticable input lag.
Mayhaps because you're a moron who has never actually played these same games natively, with no input lag, because you don't own the hardware to do so and compare? I can notice the input lag and also the image quality degradation when I stream locally on my own network with nearly 0 network ping and over 100Mbps stream bitrate. You get way shittier quality due to low stream bitrate and much, much higher network latency by streaming from a remote server so it's definitely noticeable to anyone who knows better, you just don't.

I've tried streaming locally with parsec/moonlight, GeForce now is still better even though it's a remote server. No weird artifacts or loss in quality that I can see . Maybe their technology is better.

The $10/month tier gives you access UP TO, not guaranteed, RTX 3060. You can get those for $300 nowadays, so even accounting for the discount if you pick the 6 month subscription, it'll pay itself back in 3 years and you'll get to keep the card too.

            Anonymous

            >it will pay itself back in three years
doubtful that the subscription power won't be upgraded by then. You aren't going to beat something at scale on cost.

              Anonymous

Sure, they'll probably upgrade the best possible card your session gets by then but remember, even a 3060 isn't guaranteed, it's just the best card you could get right now in that tier. They could still be in use a couple of years from now if better cards aren't available for your stream.

Wait what? What the frick? Wut? Wat? is renting a whole PC vs just renting a GPU completely different? I people train their AI on H100s because they need at least 36GB and 300GB for SD and LLM respectively.

That's not how this shit works. You don't get access to the system or even just a GPU, all you get is the ability to play a pre-approved selection of games from a few different digital storefronts. Basically you link your Steam/EA/Epic/GOG/Ubisoft account to your Nvidia account and then use the geforce now app to launch whatever you want to play, assuming it's supported by Nvidia. You don't get to run random .exes.

Geforce Now isn't renting a whole computer. You're thinking of Shadow PC or whatever (which is even worse latency-wise for gayming)

      That really shows it off.

You can feel latency decrease from going 60hz to 120 hz on a monitor with a mouse and I mean input latency.

Yet people are somehow thinking that fricking streaming is going to have none.

What's crazy is I play a lot of VR streamed wirelessly and I don't notice any latency (even though it's about 30-40ms) thanks to Asynchronous TimeWarp I guess. Even moving my controller in 3d space feels normal but for some reason using a mouse with input lag is unplayable to me when the input lag is more than like 10ms. I wonder why that is and why the VR magic can't be done for a mouse

Let's take some time and logic to explore this. Since I live in Japan let me share with you some thoughts.

So America huge country, shit internet, it's not a country where streaming is ever going to be a thing unless major infrastructure changes happen. Let's look east.

Japan. Decently size country but 90% of it is mountains. 60% of the population lives in 3 metro areas. Tight spaces means no space for gaming PCs and shit. Damn most people don't even own a regular gaming console.

So NTT East and West are offering Hikari 10 gbit symmetric fiber for 55$ .

You have Softbank, Nuro, Au, Docomo all ofering 10git these days.

So in a society where gaming is hugely popular, nobody has space, most of the urban residents can get a 10gbit connection for cheap.

Nobody seems to be using Streaming? Why?

Because it sucks thats why, even with all the insane requirements met. Within 100 km of the server, optical low latency internet, insane internet speed, no space at home.

Nobody uses it. Because it is that bad.

Meanwhile the local Eidon has an entire fricking Steam Deck thing going on.
