>this was a single span of like 2-3 months not even a year after the console's release and doesn't even include the dozens of AA and smaller exclusives also released in that timeframe
How in the motherfrick did we go from that to current year where people will shitpost about the two actually worthwhile exclusives and "timed" multiplats they've gotten over a three year period?

Blame the graphics obsessed b***hes that care about cinematic experiences

      HD game development is hard.
Look at what it did to Nintendo, it now takes them 6 years to release an asset flip that runs at 15 fps half the time.

This. But it's not only graphicsgays. Games released on PC can be crossgenerational and don't need to live up to conventions of "ew this looks like a PS4 game" when being developed for PS5. We could have more devs churn out games if they took the Legend of Heroes franchise mentality for a spin, but consoles kill that mentality in terms of releasing physically. Consolegays AND graphicsgays are to blame

Those games all had state of the art graphics tho.
They pushed the PS2 to it's limit and used the hardware way better than the modern PS5 is used.

        >Armored Core had three games on the PS1 that all had the same blocky graphics and ran at 22 FPS
        >Armored Core 2 comes out less than a year into the PS2's lifespan, has great visuals, and runs at a steady 60 FPS
Devs back then were on another level.

it can't be understated how much of a beast the PS2 was in comparison to the PS1.

First thing you might hear when there's a new adaptation is "what ps2/3 game is this?". There's no escape. Games these days must have some quality in graphics otherwise it won't sell as an AAA/AA game.

That and the fact that third parties have realized there's a lot more money in multiplats vs exclusives, if that list of games released in current year only GT3 and Jak would be exclusives and the rest would be multiplats with maybe one or two 6 month times exclusivity periods

        Anonymous

There's isn't necessarily more money in multiplats because otherwise Xbox would get more ports. Simple fact is that MS pays to get games released on their platform.

In lieu of upgrading my PC to play modern 'slop I've been finding out just how far emulation has progressed the past few years and playing not just games but entire genres that I'd skipped out on previously. I don't think I'll ever buy a new modern game again.

Yeah you can run pretty much anything up to 6th gen and even some 7th gen stuff on a fairly cheap PC, even upscaled. If you're playing 5th gen and older stuff you can get away with a complete toaster.

          Was DC exclusive until 2002
          vs SNK
          Was DC exclusive until 2002
          III Arena
This one was only console exclusive to DC for like 6 months, however Dreamcast was the only console that could play the game online until it released on Xbox 360 like a decade later.

I'll give you the others but Quake 3 Arena was released on the PC in 1999, how can you call that a console exclusive in any way

            Anonymous

Console exclusive means it's only on a specific console on top of being on PC. Like how Halo is Xbox console exclusive but also releases on PC.

It was not on console. Consoles were more popular than PCs back in the day zoomer. Most PC's didnt have 3d graphics cards.

Games didn't take nearly as much effort as they do nowadays.

Its also why you saw a lot more "out there" games twenty years ago then you do now where the only "out there" games are generally indiefare or mobile shit.

Games cost a fraction of the amount to produce back then. And took about 1/4 of the time to make.

Why did the price and dev time skyrocket? Because that very system, The PS2, and Sony themselves, turned gaming away from gameplay and onto "cinematics" which made budgets skyrocket.

    Controversial opinion here
I'm happy we aren't getting as many good games as before.
There are still so many older classics I still haven't played. I wouldn't have time for that if good games were released every month.
A few good games a year is enough to satisfy while also giving me time to play the older stuff

Games were easier to make back then like in general.
Teams were smaller, budget was tight and deadlines were enforced to a tee to developers had to deliver by nature because things like patches and DLCs didn't exist
