How to make the 4th Sticker Star like even worse

    >Back to consumable attacks, and no EXP system
    >More Mini games than actual battles
    >Bosses that instakill you if you don't have the required item hidden in some obscure part of the dungeon, and when you do have the item, it kills the boss in one hit
    >an attempt at a gear/summon system but any bonuses provided are so minimal that it's useless.
    >More generic NPCs,
    >Heavy handholding tutorials that don't stop even at the final area, and LOL So meta humor everywhere
    >Bowser Is around but has no lines whatsoever
    >Might as well throw away everything when you get to the final area, as the final battles are just a series of minigames

Oh yeah I really hated that if you don't use the Things on bosses, the game essentailly yells at you for actually wanting a challenge and not letting it hold your hand

I think you genuinely can't kill any boss without Thing Stickers outside of the Goomba and Petey Piranha. They're such ridiculous damage sponges with ludicrous amounts of HP that you'll be spending up to 20 minutes flailing at them before you run out of resources.

In Color splash the Koopalings flat out auto dodge everything that isn't the Thing you need.

At that point, don't waste the players time if they don't have the right thing and just insta-kill them and say "you forgot this moron", better than being forced to continue an unwinnable battle and not knowing why.

Now that I think of it, Insta-killing you for not having the correct thing needed seems to be a better solution than just locking you into an unwinnable battle that while you can run away from, you have to recollect the things you actually used.

Actually, you should have just had the Things just be puzzles outside of boss battles.

I think in SS the Stickers were entirely just used in the overworld up to the last year of development

then whose the bonehead who decided things should be the things that let you get past bosses? It feels less like an RPG when you have to defeat them a very specific way that deals so much damage it might as well just insta kill the boss

SS' development was very rocky so they might have been trying something that just didn't end up working without any time to fix or remove the problems. Remember how Bowser's castle was a literal empty hallway?

Though they still continued to use Things in Color Splash, save for the fact that the boss dodges everything that isn't the Thing weakness.

I still say it might as well have just insta killed you instead of wasting your time on an unwinnable battle, games filled with instant game overs anyway.

They fixed (or at least tried to fix) a lot of problems in CS, but yeah the combat is still hot dogshit. Arguably it's worse.

I'm sure there are ways to make these sort of things work. Stickers could be a grid system of stats and skills or something. A deck based battle system has already proven to work numerous times.

                Anonymous

Maybe the stickers could be reusable but run on a cooldown that depends on the sticker, or in the grid system putting stickers of the same type or kind in a row or column increases their effectiveness.

And if you really wanted things in both games, make them your Limit Break, and make the one boss that is immune to everything but them a tutorial on it, it won't deal any damage to the boss or the boss just heals up and says "that didn't count jerk" or something like that.

You more or less described the card system from Mario & Luigi Paper Jam, which did work well to complement the regular battle system.

Color Splash replaces the sticker album with a huge deck of cards you gotta scroll through, select, paint and then flick into battle. It's a giant pain in the ass because you can have hundreds of fricking cards and there's no proper sorting or filtering options. SS didn't have a good battle interface either but at least you can remember what sticker was on what page. Having to confirm I want to use a card plus touch controls for every move, aghhhhhhhhhhh.

Also it's so poorly designed that things like this can happen:

How hard would it have been to give you a finite deck you could edit, and can chose from a small hand in battle with any card you used being shuffled back into your deck?

                Anonymous

That wouldn't have been hard at all but that'd involve giving a shit.

It doesn't have to mean the combat is Baten Kaitos Origins level of hard, but it should mean that it should have been decently designed and not feel like any battle that isn't mandatory is a waste of time and resources

Nta but I killed the Desert Baseball boss (can't remember what it was at this point because i only played that dog shit game once on release) so assuming wasn't one of the two you mentioned, you can kill at least one more without the thing sticker.

How many of the Major bosses in Origami King (the 4 summons included), are flat out immune to anything that isn't the battlefield gimmicks? I know all of them can't be defeated without them but it seems like its just done pretty poorly.

I think the battle with King Goomba and the Goomba bros in 64 did this better, can't exactly point out why though

      Anonymous

I don't mind how it's done in The Origami King because the battles are puzzles based around the bosses' gimmicks entirely and you actually have to engage with them to exploit their weaknesses without being able to just shut them down. They recognized there's nothing to the battle system by itself and made it a means to an end depending on the boss. Of course there was still the glaring issue of regular battles being pointless, but they're at least easily ignored. Whereas in Sticker Star and Color Splash the game tries to pretend you can battle the bosses normally but you're not actually expected or allowed to, and the game even berates you if you try to brute-force it instead of just picking the insta-win option with the correct Thing.

I thought it was impossible in CS too because bosses just auto-dodge anything that's not a Thing including replicas

I vaguely recall you being able to damage some of the Koopalings with regular attacks although they'd usually pull out an instakill attack before you could take them out if you didn't use the Thing. I stopped trying after a couple times it happened and just submitted to the game's bullshit so I don't know how each one works in detail.

Oh right, I got confused. Yeah that's what actually happens, they just kill you if you don't use the Thing quickly enough. Good game design.

I'm glad Thousand Year Door got remade, just got my copy the other day.

Though I wish they made it easier to choose the partner Yoshi's color, instead of an obscure clock. Maybe some npc that asks you what color looks best on something, but youd have to go out of your way to talk to them or the color is randomized or timer based

Shame that Mario and Luigi is dead since Alphadream shut down. The last real Mario RPG we got before this and the Super Mario RPG remake was the rabbids crossover.

You know, the species hated for hijacking the Rayman franchise. Though I hear the 2 Mario games are good though
