        >The church and/or government are evil
Combining both is cheating. Also Dragon Quest, the archetypical JRPG, has a church that isn't evil.
        >Everything is beautiful at all times
        Never happens
        >Amnesia
Eh, it's a 50/50. Usually only if the main character is a self-insert or custom character, like in DQXI or XBCX.
        >Childhood friend of the opposite sex
        Of the same sex*
        >Elves and fairies
        Elves yes, fairies only occasionally.
        >Dragons are the smartest sons of b***hes on Earth
        See also: WRPGs
        >Goblins are basically animals

Fair, but that's mainly a Squeenix + Skies of Arcadia thing.

I am a sucker for most Fantasy races/tropes out there be it eastern or western. Still some new or not often used playable races are welcome like insects or birds.
Feel free to spoonfeed me some games where you can play them.

        boats
        Love this shit

Back in the 80s and 90s people weren't afraid of having truly original fantasy settings and it's something that doesn't happen very often anymore. I'd rather have something completely generic than something generic trying to pretend it's something new like having orc and elves, but they're called something different.

Browse through any 80s-90s Sword & Sorcery or Sci Fi B-Movies and you will change your mind. I recommend Deathstalker 2.

You can have magic in sci-fi settings. In fact, loads of sci-fi series have both

JRPGs and WRPGs both shamelessly rip off D&D, which itself is derived from Tolkein's work. In Japan's case, it's because of Dragon Quest, a derivative of Ultima, which is a derivative of D&D.

They both take inspiration sure but they've both taken different paths moving forward, WRPGs with system depth and immersive sims while JRPGS with rule of cool and stand-out characterization. Ironically, I believe Gygax wouldn't like either one has gone kek.

There were just as many, proportionally, derivative fantasy settings in the 80s and 90s as there are nowadays.

        Anonymous

I know, but because of that people tried harder to think of more original settings and like I said it's preferable to be totally generic instead of being generic and pretending to not be just because elves and orcs have new names.

its only because many fantasy writers are lazy hacks - its so easy to just reuse tolkien-based classes and have 'magic' as a copeout explanation for everything and every mechanic etc not even bothering with coherency or fundamental logic

  13. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

That's because everyone will just equate stuff to elves/dwarves/orcs, even if they have nothing to do with those fantasy tropes but for the vaguest similar themes.
    >strong barbarians? must be orcs
    >elegant mages? must be elves
    >isolationist industrialists? must be dwarves
But then again, you can also mix in many different traits so people are less likely to draw those comparisons.
