I think the women are half-correct. Xbox has always been a "dudebro" console and never managed to attract anyone else, including any guy who prefer a different aesthetic/vibe than "dudebro". Nintendo, Playstation and PC all managed to attract the dorky nerds to their platforms, and the dorky nerds were gamers before the dudebros.
Of course, modern Xbox turning away from that was a failure because it didn't become a console for everyone, it just became a console for no one.

There are a lot more dudebro guys out there than there are not. The söyboy californians are a tiny minority of the male populace of which none of the other males like being around or playing games with at all.

Which comes back to the age-old problem of trying to "Garner a new audience" by telling your old audience to frick off. The audience really just wanted a place to play madden and Halo. So they killed Halo and Madden is on every other console. Why do they need Phil? Why do they need a shitbox?

To add, carving out dudebro was a form of triangulation. To cannibalize that base to expand is simply not a successful option. It's israeli and vampiric. Use up a market and move on.

And the gaming community is religious in their devotion. So you had the great idea to take advice from Nintendo and Sony fans to entice them. But like a woman,

Have you considered that destroying any resemblance of men having fun is their hobby?

gamers weren't giving advice to help Xbox. But to emasculate their strength.

No one can save Xbox at this point, not in the short term. They spent $7.5 billion to buy Zenimax and $70 billion to buy Activision, and all they achieved is... same exact sales as the Xbox One, maybe worse.
Long term, sure, anything is possible long term. But this generation is done.

They just need REAL exclusives. How can a console survive with no exclusives? Legit impossible, unless they blur the line between Xbox and PC. Right now Xbox is just a locked down PC with no PS5 games and PC exclusives. If they do not want exclusives, they need to blur the line. BLUR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            Anonymous

A console without exclusives can exist just fine, not everyone wants to deal with a PC. Some people want a videogame machine that's braindead easy to use, nothing more.
            >Food analogy incoming.
McDonalds is still popular, despite the fact you can make better burgers for cheaper at home. Console vs. PC is the same concept.

The problem is that PS5 and Xbox do the same exact thing, they're the same exact console. Switch does its own thing in the handheld console market, it could exist just fine with zero exclusives because it competes against nothing. PC is all about freedom, it does its own thing and it could exist just fine with zero exclusives.
PS5 and Xbox compete for the same exact userbase. But PS5 won, so who the frick is going to buy the same product but worse.

So they either try the same thing again next-gen and try to beat Sony in the same market space. Or, as you said, they try to attract a different audience by doing something different... like selling some sort of console-PC hybrid. Or anything else really, who knows what they could come up with: look at what Nintendo did after they lost two generations in a row, they came up with the Wii and targeted a different audience.
Either way, this generation is done, they lost. They lost hard, considering how much they invested: this is THE worst generation ever for Xbox, it's not even remotely close. Xbox can't be saved by anyone in the short term, they need to rethink their entire strategy.

                >people that want to play games want exclusives

                >moronic like you
                >and also use PC
You call me moronic, and then you admit you own consoles despite also owning a PC? Hello?

They went dumpster diving to buy up anything they could just to have shit to throw at the wall. Nothing sticks though because you get what you pay for. If the owners thought the studio had a promising future then it wouldn't be for sale. For example, it took Double Fine 6 years to push Psychonauts 2 out the door and have openly said the game would not have been finished without Microsoft coming in and the studio would have just closed. They've had nothing to announce for the past 3 years as well. Microsoft's strategy has changed because it just doesn't have to deal with this shit anymore now that they have stuff like CoD pulling in billions every year. They're going to allot x amount of vanity dollars per year and it's all going to go towards keeping stuff like Gears or Halo afloat.

They are never ever going to make enough money with Call of Duty to pay off what they spent to acquire Activision. It's going to take them DECADES.
And if their plan is to get people to switch from PS5 to Series X, it's never going to work either. Who the frick is spending $500 + $15 a month for CoD, when they can stick with their PS5 and spend $70 once. All they're doing is selling CoD for $15 instead of $70 to people who already own an Xbox.

The problem they have is that they need to not release their games on PC because if they're on PC and everyone and their mother has a PC, why the hell would anyone buy an xbox?
The problem is that if they do the same as the 360 they're literally shooting themselves on the foot because they're hindering their own computer operating system, but being truly real here, the only way to course correct would be to release any games whatsoever, be good games and not being available on PC or gamepass.

I've been subbed to Game Pass for the last three years (I paid €80 in total, with the Xbox Live Gold trick), and to be honest... I barely used it. I realized it's not THAT great of a deal, realistically, because videogames take so long to beat.
Like, I played Yakuza 0 on Game Pass, it took me a month to beat. A month of Game Pass is €15, Yakuza 0 goes on sale to €5 pretty regularly on Steam.

As per usual, you all reach the wrong conclusion on how things work. "Going woke" is not a cause, but a symptom; the decline in sales was ALREADY APPROACHING. Microsoft knew this, hence why they shifted gears and tried "going woke."

The reason why Microsoft is in the shitter is because they make stupid fricking decisions and have been doing so since Steve Ballmer became CEO in 2000. The company has been far too conservative and disconnected from reality ever since.

Anyone still playing on consoles after 2010 is a child or a fricking moron, by the way. Valve paved the way for PC gaming to be viable from a general consumer standpoint in the late 2000's. There's no excuse for staying on consoles anymore unless your IQ is so low you can't even figure out how to install Steam and occasionally read a forum for a tech guide.

You can literally use third-party USB Hubs with the Switch, but you have to make sure it's supported. Because it has to "trick" the Switch into thinking it's the official dock, otherwise it doesn't work.

Generally people get consoles as kids and then move onto PC when they get more into the medium and want to use a device which can also assist in things outside of just leasure.
Kids now don't care about gaming, they're growing up in a time when publisher greed is at an all time high and plus their first exposure to games is likely mobile games full of ads and microtransactions, which would be enough to convince any newcomer that gaming is waste of time.

Xbone is a red herring. Recovering from a poor launch is exactly what Sony did with the PS3 the gen behavior. I don't even think the product itself was bad, only the marketing which illustrates the real problem. Microsoft is an enterprise company. Their expertise is working with developers not directly with customers. In a vacuum, Xbox SHOULD be the preferred platform for developers. It uses the same DirectX apis as PC, follows a saner build architecture, and Microsoft is just better at support than Sony. In a world without first-party exclusives, Xbox would win. And this happened a little bit in the 7th gen. Most third-party games ran better on the 360.

But then they were flanked by Sony. Sony might not be as friendly for developers, but Sony poured everything into prestige titles that built up their brand with consumers. And ultimately, developers are beholden to the platforms consumers choose. This all happened in the worst possible generation when players built up their digital libraries and the cost/length of development skyrocketed making it much harder for Xbox to catch up.

Part of the motivation to promote Phil was that he's a genuine gamer who Microsoft presumed understood what gamers wanted. Theoretically, Game Pass is an excellent value for gamers who want to play a variety of games. The problem is Phil is too much of a gamer. It's not a lack of budget that prevents players from trying most games, it's a lack of interest. So putting Phil in charge is kind of like putting a film nerd in charge of your movie theater. The only thing that is going to draw crowds are the big AAAA tech demos; they're not in it for the game design.

I think part of it is that MS fricked up at exactly the wrong time. The PS4 was the era were companies were starting to turn their consoles into an ecosystem. If for whatever reason you want to upgrade your console at this point, as a PS4 owner you're more likely to go with a PS5 simply because you can transfer all your shit now.

If he's an actual gamer and not just pretending, he's a normie with shit taste. Why the frick did he spend $70 billion for Call of Duty, imagine how many smaller studios he could've bought and supported with such an insane amount of money. What did this move even achieve, Activision would've published CoD on Xbox anyway.

And why did they close down Tango, their only studio that was able to produce a good videogame. It didn't sell well? First of all, how many copies did they expect a "Japanese rhythm-based action game" to sell, of course it was going to be niche. But most importantly, WHO THE FRICK CARES IF IT FLOPS. That's not the point. The point is to build a wide (and I emphasize "wide", one single good niche game on its own is useless) library of PRESTIGIOUS games only available on your platform. Xbox would get the AAAA slop anyway, who cares who publishes it.

And, honestly, that's exactly what I thought they were going to do. Starting with Psychonauts 2: a niche but prestigious name among enthusiasts, a game that couldn't have been made otherwise. Same with Stalker 2 (well, war aside). But then they went full moron and bought Zenimax and Activision.

Personally, I do believe he's a real "gamer": he plays Call of Duty, Destiny 2, Skyrim and Assassin's Creed, stuff like that. The sloppiest of the slop. There's nothing wrong with it, still better than a suit who doesn't understand videogames at all, but he shouldn't be allowed to take decisions on his own (or be surrounded by people like him). Only a moron who believes Call of Duty is the be-all and end-all of videogames would buy Activision for SEVENTY BILLION DOLLARS.

I'm looking at the studios they bought and I do believe they were on the right track in 2018. Someone in the company understood what they were supposed to do: buy smaller but struggling studios with a proven track record. Mimimi, Croteam, Larian (well, pre-BG3), these kind of studios. Buy 50 of them. Release a new niche game every month or two, while also getting all AAAs to attract the masses. Boom, now everyone's subbed to GamePass.
But they wasted $80 billion Zenimax and Activision instead.

        >Why the frick did he spend $70 billion for Call of Duty, imagine how many smaller studios he could've bought and supported with such an insane amount of money.
First of all, Call of Duty are actually good games. If you transported a hardcore gamer from the year 2004 to present day, do you think they'd be more impressed by the latest Call of Duty or Psychonauts 2. Be honest. Hardcore gamers are so overexposed to the industry that they lose perspective. Just because you've eaten so much pizza that it no longer excites you doesn't mean that pizza doesn't taste good anymore.
Secondly, they bought the smaller studios like inXile, Double Fine, and Obsidian first. Activision was their last acquisition and it's because they REALLY want to push Game Pass into the mainstream so they need mainstream titles.
        >And why did they close down Tango, their only studio that was able to produce a good videogame. It didn't sell well?
I'm not even sure Phil was involved here. Microsoft told Zenimax to consolidate and Zenimax decided to close studios that didn't have any active projects. Moreover, Tango is a AAA studio. If they were just the size of the Hi-Fi Rush team, it'd be easier to justify keeping them around. But imagine if Take-Two paid Rockstar's enormous personnel costs just for their only successful title in 10 years to be Bully 2. Critical acclaim or not, they'd be furious.
        >library of PRESTIGIOUS games only available on your platform
They already have these games. Outside of their own first-party output like Psychonauts 2, Hi-Fi Rush, and Pentiment they also have loads of critical darling indies like Cocoon, Firewatch, and Celeste. They already have this on their platform and it hasn't moved customer sentiment one iota. People still insist "just make good games" because they're too chickenshit to admit that by "good game" they mean AAAA spectacle.

          Which is why I said
          >and I emphasize "wide", one single good niche game on its own is useless
They needed a constant stream of these games, not one a year. They needed to build a critical mass of somewhat niche videogames, which at some point would be impossible to ignore. A constant barrage of niche titles.
Of course if you compare Psychonauts 2 with Call of Duty directly, CoD is way more impressive. But for every CoD, they would be able to produce ten Psychonauts 2s... while still getting CoD anyway, it's not like users had to choose.

          >critical darling indies like Cocoon, Firewatch, and Celeste
I don't mean indies made by two people, but AAs made by middle-sized studios.

          >Call of Duty are actually good games.
That depends on what you consider "good". The movement and gunplay in the recent games are definitely satisfying, but the campaigns are mediocre tech demos. Zombies/third modes ranges from good to shit depending on the game. Warzone is a mediocre take on APEX/Fortnite. Multiplayer is addicting but support was deprioritized until MW2023.
They're definitely what moves consoles though, but is that alone worth investing nearly 70 billion into acquiring? I really don't know, Zenimax seemed like a safer bet since it would be much easier to make that money back.

        >Activision would've published CoD on Xbox anyway.
the buyout was forced by activision's greed

As part of the testimony at a FTC vs Microsoft evidentiary hearing, Sarah Bond confirmed that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick refused to bring Call of Duty to the Xbox Series X/S Gen 9 launch unless Microsoft made a specific revenue split deal. "It was clear that Call of Duty would be on PS5 and that would not have been good if it was not also on Xbox if it was launching at the same time," Bond said. "It was clear if we did not move beyond the standard rev share, he would not place Call of Duty on Xbox."

The FTC slipped up and mentioned an 80-20 split, so it appears Call of Duty gets that favorable option.

Bond says that Call of Duty's development teams would not agree to start using Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S dev kits before the deal was struck. This is a critical step to ensure that new Call of Duty games were prepared for launch alongside the Xbox Series Gen 9 duo of consoles in 2020.
