        Anonymous

it is but movement was more fun in the first game so it doesnt really matter. 1 basically does everything better and despite being shorter feels like a more complete game than 2 as well

        Anonymous

Level design was more boring, the charm of Psychonauts 1 was how much the levels reinvented what the game even was. Every psychonauts 2 level was basically "platformer" and while the actual platforming was more solid, no one played psychonauts for the platforming in the first place.

The fact that levitation was so broken in psychonauts 1 that you could basically ignore the platforming with it was one of the best things about the game, since you basically traded boring platforming shit for a gotta go fast physics-based power. "Fixing" levitation so that the game forced you take take the platofrming seriously in the sequel was a downgrade.

            not even close.
just because the grind rails don't glitch out as much now, doesn't make it a good platformer.
the movement is not that fun. raz is not very fun to control and watch move around. the combat sucks even worse than 1.
the level design is very boring too and a lot of it is just forced cinematic slop.

I forced my self to play through the last half of the game. with the constant chatter, the end level that's basically one big cutscene that wastes your time, and the final boss that has like 6 cutscenes interrupt the fight. fricking embarrassing.

Psychonauts 1: click and point adventure mind, rampage/kaiju mind, physics roller ball mind, turn based strategy mind
Psychonauts 2: platformer mind, platformer mind, platformer mind, platformer mind

Only psychonauts 2 mind that felt like it had the creativity of the first one was the cooking mind because it introduced time management gameplay.

Psychonauts 1 was praised precisely because it was far more ambitious and creative to simply be a platformer.

        Anonymous

Right. I think one of the games (I'm leaning towards 1) has a line about how the camp is an easy way to find good recruits while milking rich parents with barely-psychic kids.

I thought the platforming and level design was better in 2

I think they were about the same on a level-by-level basis, but 1's hubworld was a lot more fun to explore for me. Visually, it looked less like a pre-planned acrobatics course.

He also only says his family's cursed and not cursed by a Gypsy

I don't even think that was a wokeness consideration. It makes him look like an idiot. Even if you ignore the reveal that the curse came from inside the family, he's a kid with vaguely eastern European parents that live in a traveling circus. Him pointing out the curse came from a Gypsy is like if a guy in Egypt with scarabs crawling out of his mouth was running around saying "Help, I've been cursed by an Egyptian!" Of course it was Egyptians, moron; that's the only kind of curse-throwing person your own race associates with.

Sadly not that direction of haram. More like "calling roma gypsies is offensive and disrespectful!" type bullshit.

Better than Psychonauts 1, and I say this as someone who played both back to back. Any complaint Psy 2 has, Psy 1 has two-fold. Oddly enough I haven't seen much buzz for Psy 2. It was on my GOTY list, but even when people were talking about it and praising the game, it was very quickly forgotten. I think the series is destined to be cult classic only sadly enough.

And if anyone deserves to be the most pissed at him it's Helmut and Bob. I assume Ford didn't think that he would do as much damage as he ended up doing to himself, but the fact that he never bothered to have a back-up plan for Helmut's safety after recovering his brain left the guy in a Hell-like stasis for decades. Basically.
See Tim didn't want to actually head the project, just write for it.
So instead he brought in this guy Zac from the AAA video game space to run the project instead.
Zac brought his AAA sensibilities to the Double Fine team which are all basically a bunch of Quirk Chungus's (see pic rel) and in turn caused so much internal conflict and strife that multiple long time members left and eventually halfway through the development Zac had to be fired and Tim decided to take responsibility and head the rest of the project himself like he should of done in the first place.

Really the reason Psy2 is a much more polished game but isn't as experimental or creative as Psy1 is because the foundations of the game were made under Zac's tenture.

Tim took a backseat, hired a guy from EA. Took an unstructured office and began to ran it like you would expect an EA office to run. Less internal collaboration, DF begins to lose senior staff, some who were around since Psychonauts 1 days. Hire typical California newcomers. One complains about anxiety from going to meetings and needs vape breaks. Development going bad, Phil Sama buys out Tim. MS declares everything will be just as usual, MS isn't taking away your magic. Also it just felt moronic that half of the organisation's idolised founding fathers were living for years in and around their headquarters with severe mental trauma and nobody was able or willing to significantly help them, while a 10 year old boy with no formal training helped them all and sent them on a path to recovery in a single day. That's what Raz was initially supposed to be seen as. He's a prodigy, so he was the big fish in a little pond back at summer camp where kids were doing first year telekinesis. I hate how in a game and universe where everyone looks like a fricking genetic freak with radiated blue, purple, green skin, bulging eyes, lack of noses, and weird skull shapes, the two characters meant to be obvious minorities really stick out like a sore thumb, have the most natural looking skin, and dont fit in with the actual aesthetic of the game at all.

Raz looking the most human helped solidify his main character status, so its weird seeing other characters who look as human as he does.

      >Hey Raz! Listen carefully... Remember all the things every adult in this series keep telling you are the worst possible things you could do with your powers? Well, i did all of those things! And guess what? I did them WITH YOUR FATHER! But that's ok i guess because he was a sad orphan kid and i thought it would be ok to brainwash a child in this case while also giving a safe hideout for my girlfriend... Oh yeah! Your real granny is dead! That old lady that i tricked you all into loving is the murder god demon that genocided your entire country and killed your real grandma, and now she will kill everyone in the base and most likely the rest of the planet! And also... Me and all the other heroes you idolizes so much are responsible for creating the murder god demon! You will have to cut us some slack in this one, we were being experimental and stuff man! Like how scientist would play by shoving uranium inside their asses when researching radiation... I think this is true! The important thing is that i got to live somewhat free of guilty for a while with a fractured mind eating epic bacon while your family had to live poor with a career crippling hydrophobia while also supporting and loving the monster that ruined their lives, and the murder granny also got yo live guilty free thanks to brainwashing, isn't it great?

I’d actually to chime in as a former huge fan of Psychonauts that both of the games have retroactively had a huge depreciation in quality for me as I’ve gotten older and learned about the actual nature of the human mind and mental health. Even the fact that P1 and P2 are trying to adapt different psychological theories in retrospect is a complete circus act (lol). Without getting into schizobabble - and believe me, I could, I’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia by a doctor - the TLDR is that to anyone on the outside looking in, the history of psychology is shaped like a conspiracy theory to a point where it’s almost comical that so few people notice. There is no universe where Freud’s theories should have lasted into the 20th century, let alone 2005, in a field where the scientific method is supposedly applied to everything. Things like porn addiction, formative memories, the psychological cause for fetishes, and a million other psychological concepts that are not only generally known by the public but are actively used by people on Twitter to browbeat innocents are completely made-up. The ultimate reason not to respect Tim Schafer is that he’s a complete fricking normal who’s sticking to and basing his games around a Bible-tier fantasy theory just because some parts of it are internally consistent enough to make sense to him. Sucks, senpai.

In Europe psychoanalisis is generally treated like a joke and not actual psychology in most psychogist's circles and theories having some proper scientific studies backing them up is much more stressed
In US psychoanalysis and "common sense psychology" are sadly still much more widespread

I'm talking about thepsychological theory and research though, when it comes to actual therapists it's still basically wild west in most places, with each therapist doing whatever they like sadly

        >Are they all complete bullshit? Are there alternative explanations?
They don’t exist. You can experience superficial trace phenomena with some connection to them, but those things just do not describe things that happen in the human mind. Nature versus nurture isn’t real, personality is genetic, etc. Weird that these are such basic things that you could easily confirm by testing them yourself, but you can’t find studies that support them, huh? You can only experience them, but most people are entrenched enough in the flow of society to be unable to separate the natural state of their mind from its situational response to the world.

          Anonymous

Personality being genetic isn't that surprising to me because politics are. Is there wiggle room, though? Is nurture pointless?

          Anonymous

If you can experience it, you can make a study about it. There are no studies on those things because they can't be experienced seeing as they're bullshit. Your doctor needs to up the dose of your meds because your fantastical thinking is still not under control.

It improves on the first in a lot of small areas but also misses things I really liked about the original game. Each world blends together into a platforming/combat mush with the same enemy types repeated over and over. Psychonauts 1 doesn't have the strongest platforming moveset, but it changes up a lot between each world with some having heavier platforming and others having more puzzles. Something that 2 just doesn't do for whatever reason.
I dislike how the combat forces you to use a specific power to beat most enemies and would've preferred that power just doing more damage or something.
It lacks the early/mid 2000s edge of the original, and the interns are nowhere near as interesting or as fleshed out as even Bobby. I enjoyed what we did get of them. And I want to frick Sam.

My favorite part about Psychonauts was interacting with all the counselors and campers by showing them all your items and using your psychic powers on them.

They all had unique lines for each thing you did to them or showed them, even things you couldn't have yet unless you used cheats. Put on the cheats for all items and all powers, then go around and try it out. I forget if Coach Oleander said shit when showing him Mr. Pokeylope but all the campers had dialogue for seeing the turtle. also you can use Clairvoyance on Oleander to see that he views you as a literal Brain.

It's a good game, but it's just not that special to me.
The reason Psychonauts is a cult classic is because of its edge, the creative levels in both presentation and gameplay, and the characters.
Psychonauts 2 has creative levels in presentation, but they're all platforming. The cooking one is the only one that has the feeling of a Psychonauts 1 mind. I'm sure for the pure platformer lovers this game is a godsend, but that's not me and it's not why Psychonauts is such an all time classic.
The characters suck. The new group of kids mostly suck, they aren't nearly as entertaining as the camp kids. The new agents mostly suck, they aren't nearly as entertaining as the asylum patients. To top it all off, the returning characters from 1 are thrown out of the story after the first level besides Ford. I like Lili and Raz and the only thing they got was a side quest. I guess I liked Raz's family too, at least.
Psychonauts 2 is a good game but it's much more appealing to general platformer fans than someone who specifically is a Psychonauts fan. It doesn't have what made the first game special, it's just a good platformer.

Because they're TEENAGERS. Did you never have the experience of being around a bunch of teens as a younger kid? It takes you completely out of your depth. At a summer camp everyone's a kid trying to be top dog but going into the pseudo-adult world of teens makes kids feel very, very small.

      It is kind of funny

"Raz, curses and Necromancy aren't real."

      "Sure their not."

And low and behold the ten year old doesn't actually know shit.

    Absolute garbage

Takes itself way too seriously. In the first game you messed woth people’s heads to get what you wanted, now it has a whole spiels about MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS and CONSENT

Not to mention 90% of the game is about fixing the love life of gross 80 year old men. Lemon party is a free website I dont need to pay 70 bucks for it
