Yes, Sting originally announced Dept Heaven as a 9 games thing (not counting the Union spin-offs) which we only got 4: Riviera (episode I), Yggdra Union (episode II), Knights in the Nightmare (episode IV), and Gungnir (episode IX). There isn't any clear connection outside of some bosses and some recurring characters. There was also an MMORPG announced that got stuck in development hell and never saw the light of the day.
It goes Yggdra, KiTN, then Riviera
At least going by the status of Marietta
Are all 4 games good on PSP? I remember Knights in a Nightmare having a touch gimmick, does it translate well to no touch or should I just load the DS Rom onto my DSi?
I actually found Knights one of the easier games, at least outside Nightmare mode which I didn't try
I'm quite fond of it, but it's not something I would recommend to others without reservation. It's mechanically pretty simplistic, but also unique enough that you might find it interesting regardless. Similarly, the plot and characters aren't especially deep, but they're presented well and likable.
Ultimately, I think you have to try it yourself and see what you think.
>I heard mixed things about its gameplay though. Is it any good /vrpg/?
YMMV. The gameplay is basically a bundle of gimmicks. You got treasure chests with QTEs, a combat system where an entire party can only use 4 items, etc.
It's literally one of the best games ever released. I replay it like once a year. Just play it OP, it's a big mix of stuff but it's really fun, and you'll never play anything like it.
A lot of people prefer the pixel look and raw sound of the GBA version while others prefer the high quality CGs and music of the PSP version. The PSP version also has an extra 8th chapter that has little relevance.
Either way, it's fine. Personally, I simply emulate the GBA version on my phone emulator since it requires little timing and button sensibility and play the PSP on the big screen TV hooked to my pc/PPSSPP.
I remember emulating the GBA on PSP, don't think I was ever aware of the native release. The game itself was forgettable besides the art.

Or you could just explain what it's like, as

and even the first half of your post did.
No one mentioned the exploration is menu-based and quantified instead of free movement. It is half VN, half jarpig, SNES tech.

For any game, if the original version was on DS or 3DS, and it was later ported off, The best version will always be the DS or 3DS version on DSiXL and new3DSXL
Counter-point: The Alliance Alive, the 3D versions of Final Fantasy 3 & 4, Rune Factory 4
And those are just RPG examples. Even more if you count other genres.
I've never played it, but I remember reading through the official guide for it in a London Drugs while waiting for my mom to finish shopping 20-odd years ago. It gave me a huge crush on Cierra and I still think about her sometimes.
I've only played the GBA version briefly and it was slow, boring, with awful cringey anime crap that felt like it was made for foam adventure type of girls.
Play it and find out
My only peeve with this series is the fact that there is no concrete sequence or chronology to the lore of the world for this game.
It's a good game OP. It's the first ever gameboy game for me that introduced my young self to nudity.
Don't forget they promised 9 games and we only had 4.
9 games? This series was supposed to have 9 in it for some reason?

Forget 9, I'm surprised it even got the four.

But isn't the order Riviera > Yggdra > KitN > Gungnir?
The episode number has no correlation to the chronology. It's just the order in which the games' concepts were pitched.
I already played and really liked Yggdra, which one should I go for next?
