All I know about them is you play as a dolphin and aliens are involved somehow. Also I think I hear people hating them simply because you play as a dolphin and some people think that is kinda lame.

Ecco and the sequal tides of time are both great games. The artwork is amazing, and the games are decently challenging. The levels are also pretty short so you never feel overly punished for dying.
The sound effect for being hurt will be forever seared into your brain.
use unlimited air cheat or you're in for a helluva time
They are fricking 10/10 games
Don’t be a pussy, not only is it not that hard, the hardest levels are after you have infinite air without cheating anyway
>exploring a level and have to keep backtracking for air
no anon i hate that shit
Don't be a homosexual, that's the game and your air is really forgiving, you really don't need to go back for it that much.
Honestly even if you do want to be a pussy that's one thing, but telling other people to cheat? Jesus don't drag others down to your level
hey man i'm trying to make op's experience more enjoyable, you're the one throwing names around.
who's the real level dragger here eh? checkmate.
You're trying to justify how pathetic you are by suggesting it's something that needs to be done to "fix" the game, don't sugarcoat it
lol holy shit, calm down
No, piss off
OP i take it back, don't alter the game, go back for air in the early levels (that is designed only to lengthen the game which is why the mechanic is already in the game) or this guy is going to have a stroke
Thanks glad you decided to stop sucking dick
whatever man enjoy your video games
comfy and relaxing games. its more about the serene atmosphere than the gameplay itself really. i had the sega cd one and tides of time on the game gear.
I am guessing you didn’t get very far lol
no i didnt. i dont remember much of the sega cd one besides the first 2 levels or so. i got much further in the game gear one but i dont think i ever beat it. i remember getting to some weird warp speed slides or something but thats all i remember.
>relaxing
they're too hard for what they are
The best and most accessible version of Ecco 1 is the PC version with the enhanced patch. It has everything from the CD version, as well as difficulty options, a save/load system, improved textures and sound effects, and even the option to use the original Megadrive soundtrack.
Don't sleep on the Dreamcast game either. It's my favorite game on the console after Shenmue 1 & 2.
DotF love is something I can get behind. It's unfortunate that the sequel never released.
I'm looking forward to the new 2D game. 4 player Ecco could be fun.
Would'f been better if they'd taken a clue from Doom and used color-coded key glyphs you keep until the end of the level.
infinitely respawning enemies is one thing, I understand not wanting levels to turn into ghost towns, but having stuff respawn the instant their spawn point is a pixel off screen is bullshit, no balance reason to do it just annoying. the soul capture mechanic is too unreliable for it to be a solution. Needlessly makes the game torturous to play.
Soul capture system works fine on my machine
Ecco 1 is extremely unforgiving and I was never able to beat it. I remember reading an interview with a developer who said he regretted making it so difficult.
You can play the CD version of you want an easier time, it has checkpoints and shit. Also a different but equally great soundtrack
It's mostly just the final level and its constant "guess what you're supposed to do here, if you guess wrong you die" bullshit that would be annoying on its own if the level WASN'T like 10 minutes long.
They're not good games but I think they're very pleasing to see and hear. Also a good premise. They're total euro-jank in action, and it's a shame. In today's day and age they could me an absolutely beautiful Ecco game but Sega is beyond what can be considered stupid, like is Sweden was a videogame company, and won't do jack shit about it.
>They're total euro-jank in action
What? Nah these games are smooth as shit. They have fewer euro trademarks than your average American game.
Tides is a bit less clean but still not bad at all
Anyone else play the 3DS port? Seems like a faithful adaptation with the welcome ability to save at will.
The CD music is amazing but I could never get into the games.
Hard just for the creators lols but very soulful.
Series would have done a lot better as an actual dolphin sim w/ weird alien scifi elements instead of pushing all that to the background to bust your balls.
Game doesn’t even really get hard until the end though
You have passwords and infinity continues anyway. The Tube and Welcome to the Machine are definitely hard, maybe the Ice Zone
It is a puzzle game with theming from an lsd fueled US government project. Project Ecco. They nailed the theme, romantically. If they aimed for realism it would have been remarkbly grim.
Adding checkpoints to the CD version improve the game considerably. Ecco 2 CD is peak comfy.
Agree with those, but Welcome To The Machine is still one of the worst auto-scroller levels I ever played.
I love Ecco as a whole but the gameplay could be a bit better, or maybe it's the combination of gameplay (hitboxes could be more polished, and Ecco could be faster) and the level design (most of the game is maze levels, the Sega CD exclusive levels are more action-focused and they're more fun for it). Still one of the most interesting western games, conceptually. And in the art department, it's iconic.
I don’t mean to nitpick but Ecco is fast as shit, game scrolls much faster than most
Yeah when you're going straight, but stopping, changing direction/turning is very slow and clunky, could be better but it's not too bad for western gaming standards.
Your turning speed is determined by how fast you’re moving so you’re really only capped by your own skill
It's the rare 2d game that would benefit immensely from analog control
Would recommend anyone interested to play the Sega CD version. It has extra content, checkpoints, and a few balance changes. Much better version
Ecco is an experience.
First game is pretty harsh, only managed to get through it by savescumming like a motherfricker, one wrong move and youre dead and back to the start of the level.
Word of advice, after you get a damaging sonar upgrade, use dashattack and immediately sonar to use it, you will know it worked by different sound effect and the fact your dash will fail to launch. Only managed to find out how to do that properly long after getting through the game.
Another advice, you can lift moveable objects(shells/blocks) by swimming down onto them and then swimming up.
Lack of air is not going to be your problem, respawning enemies will. You can plan your way around from one airpocket to the next pretty easy. Not so much when you have half-a-dozen trilobites biting your ass every half second.
Tides of Time is easier and still pretty great while challenging. Dropped it at moray pit boss, I think, didn't need any cheats or savescumming up to that point tho.
All in all, really nice games with great atmosphere, amazing music and a little bit too many things that want to kill you in case of the first one.
>still haven't beat the last boss
if welcome to the machine didn't take so dang long I probably would have by now
still one of my favorite games, have not played 2 or 3 much
great games punctuated by small amounts of complete bullshit.
for instance, in the first game some of the bosses are REALLY hard to figure out how to kill, there's a stupid jump in the middle of the game that takes like 50 tries to get, and the last level is a big frick you.
but the games are some of the best on the genesis
Probably some of the most ocean based atmospheric games I've ever played.
But the difficulty ramps up to a ridiculous degree.
