It's not even anything new really. People have criticized fantasy for trying to be like HBO Game of Thrones. Hell, the show itself fell into its own trap of buying into its own hype. It forgot the show was entertaining because of the character drama, not because there was a bunch of sexposition and violence. They still had some of that in later season, but it went to shit without the good character drama.
Running out of material to directly draw from after Season 5 also fucked the show badly, and then the writers getting full of themselves after being pegged for Star Wars movies was the final nail in the coffin. Even HBO knew that rushing Seasons 7+8 was a horrible idea and in this light they offered and strongly suggest D&D full budgeting, production time, and runtime for two full seasons. They laughed and told HBO to go fuck themselves, and basically bragged to them that they were just gonna rush GoT out the door so that they could get their Disneybux as fast as possible. It's a good thing that this worked out for them, they would've looked so foolish if they crashed the ASOIAF franchise so catastrophically that even Disney (the company that STILL has Rian Johnson signed on for a Star Wars trilogy btw) decided that they were too toxic for Star Wars.
I still find it so funny they were willing to torch GOT and run for SW but even Disney was like "Naw"

It has worse combat.
The first season is good as it follows rhe books about as well as a show can. After that I could see the writing on the wall of the best scenes being ruined when they introduced Robbs love interest. It is different in the books. I watched a bit more but saw them starting to ruin Jaime, the best character in the books. The changes made spiraled down more and more echoing and ruining some of the best scenes in the books. I think the actors were good and some of them did what they could to try to salvage the shitshow. For one thing it is clear in the books that Deanerys is terrible and brings ruin to everything she touches. Stannis is way different as well and his character is all but assasinated by the show. All this said the book series will never be finished because the fatman will die and isnt even working on them since his big payout from the show.
