...right, but, google was using the data to push ads to people more likely to click them, not selling the data wholesale. thats the whole point. "give us, google, your money, and we will use this data only we have, to push ads to people more likely to click them". that way you can keep charging people continuously, because you have it, and they dont. yeah sure they probably sold some of it wholesale, but thats a much smaller, one off, slice of the pie.

Steam profiles were public by default and Steamspy just collected the data.
Valve then made Steam profiles private by default and most Steam users decided that they liked it that way so Steamspy lost access to that data.

You using Epic is the product. The more people they get on their platform, the more gravity it has to pull in new users. It's like social media where there is usually one winner-takes-all and 2nd place is left with peanuts.

It's why WhatsApp is so popular in Europe even though texting is free now, or WeChat in China. Then the US has had a culture growing up with the explosion of iPhones being a status symbol and now iMessage has been taking over with its "blue bubble vs green bubble" bs. Epic would target any of these markets the same way- by losing money in a gamble to pull away enough users that your platform hits critical mass.

They believe that once you have money to spend, after all you are just a kid playing fortnite, you will do it at the store where you already have a library of (free) games. What they don't understand is that to make the user feel indebted or self-justify using the store, you have to make them spend small amounts of money initially and over time.

I'm guessing their idea was that if they build you a big enough library for you to be using the epic launcher regularly, you would probably end up buying something while you're there, but the shop is still so slow and shitty to use, that I don't see how people would use if for "convenience", when it's faster to boot up steam and shop there.

The business idea here is to get people logging into EGS and have games through their launcher so it’s natural to also /buy/ games. It’s a foot in the door persuasion attempt.

Unfortunately a lot of people do what I do and just grab freebies, and then never buy jack shit. It’s like they’re handing out free samples at the baked goods store to get foot traffic but most people are just there for a free meal.

Now it’s not as crazy a strategy as it might seem, because Steam has a crazy strong position so you really need to suck people in to try to convince them to try your alternative.
You might think “why not compete without freebies”, but playing second banana (at best) for years with no real growth strategy other than “I hope people like us more than Steam” is death in the finance world. You need aggressive expansion to build investor confidence. As long as your base grows profitability can be long in the future. Look at Netflix. The party is over when they try to fleece their customers instead of expanding.

        >I mean, we know for a fact thanks to epic's court cases the only thing keeping their store afloat is fortnite and UE license.
Obviously? EGS is not their primary business and never has been, really. They were subsisting entirely on UE licensing money until Fortnite, and the Fortnite cashflow was so extreme they decided to throw that spaghetti at the wall and see what they could make stick. Make hay while the sun is shining, and all that. If EGS fails and they squander all the Fortnite money they'll just go back to developing UE like they did for a decade before they accidentally fell ass-backwards into a trillion dollar IP.

This is, like it or not, pretty standard practice in the games industry. It's why so many studios like Squeenix are flinging millions at GaaS slop that never sells. Because if even ONE catches on, it pays for all the rest, and they have the cashflow to keep trying. If EGS had managed to become profitable, it would have been enormous for them. If it doesn't, fuck it, what else were they doing with a trillion dollars in V-Bucks earnings? They'd be stupid to not at least TRY to leverage it into a stronger market position once its popularity inevitably fades.

They can’t set prices arbitrarily like that because it tanks the value of the product itself. There’s a reason a bunch of games got yanked off EGS when they did that “surprise” $5 or $10 or whatever it was off every game even new ones.

        >tanks the value of the product

        >FINAL FANTASY 7 FOR 14.99 DOLLARS

Problem is, the publishers wouldn't agree. These are the same people constantly trying to normalize higher and higher prices for new games, they would never agree to sell their games at a lower price point, even if Epic compensated them in full.

Depending on the contract, they can.
Some stores like GOG 'purchase' a quantity of game licenses from a publisher for a lower price (since they purchase in bulk), which then allows them to put regular sales on for sometimes more than Steam or other services.

That's unfortunately far in the past and difficult to rectify without a time machine, but the client being unfathomably bad in nearly every imaginable way was a major reason why EGS got shat on so much. The monkey business with Deep Silver and Metro Exodus resulted in a lot of anger, but the client being an unusable shitheap with Timmy Tencent actively trying to excuse its sorry state was just violently rubbing it in while laughing at the potential consumers for being stupid retard nagger cattle.

Many companies are still not profitable. I'm pretty sure that Netflix even at peak popularity wasn't profitable. Lots of businesses invest most of their profits back into themselves to keep growing. Epic has successfully made tons of people sign up for their storefront and can now use those numbers to attract investors.
However, Epic is working under a false assumption. They falsely assume that a lot of their users will turn into paying customers when in reality, the vast majority of all people who use EGS simply claim the free games. I don't remember the exact data but a minuscule amount of their users end up paying, a number that decreases even more if you don't count Fortnite purchases.
Epic's end goal is gain a majority market share through their free games and cashback features but nobody uses EGS exclusively. Steam users and little kids use EGS as a tool for gibs and that's it. Steam is still growing at faster rates than EGS because they don't offer anything worth paying for. They funded Alan Wake 2 which is a nice but that's a niche game and won't break even.

      >I don't remember the exact data but a minuscule amount of their users end up paying,
The evaluation of the topic that sticks with me is Valve makes more money from Linux users every year, than Epic has made from their store ever.
That was also before the Steam Deck and Steam for Linux getting up over 4% of the English-speaking market.

Those companies that "weren't profitable" like Netflix or Uber subsisted on the investment bonanza that was going on the previous years, and even disregarding that the biggest takeaway would be that, just like those companies, once they're done growing and have successfully killed their competition they're gonna put the squeeze on consumers harder than ever. Given Epic's reluctance to put meaningful consumer-facing features on their client and how they have dragged their feet on what few they've added, plus a little gem from the Wolfire vs. Valve lawsuit filing where Wolfire kept referring to the Steam Store and Steam Client as separate entities and arguing that the developers should only pay for the store costs (that is, bandwidth and storage), I'd be willing to bet Epic's long term plan once they've got people tied down is to sell a monthly subscription to access client features that were free on Steam such as remote play or controller mappings.

Firefox, sorry Ranjeet but I'll stick to W7.

Before they started using the cross-platform embedded open-source engine they use now, they used Microsoft's closed source engine that isn't really supported anymore by Microsoft, especially not on old platforms they've EOLd.
Trying to blame Valve is a no win scenario. Maintaining a browser engine is a ton of work, which is why there is really only KHTML and Gecko left.

You might need to be specific about what you consider 'full featured', because on Linux at least you can use the command line to do all the essential stuff for games you own, but a lot of the other Steam functionality only exists within the website.

All the steam features that don’t actually use a UI. Cloud saves, remote play, a list command so you don’t have to look up app ids separately. Store browsing/buying might be a pain but it makes sense to use a UI for that. Plus steamcmd can only run applications that don’t have steam drm which means you don’t need steam to run it in the first place. There’s no reason to constantly run a bloated ass embedded browser doing nothing when half this shit could be handled by a 10kb daemon running in the background. Especially when steamwebhelper is constantly fighting with GNOME and making all my games run like shit. -no-browser used to solve this but they removed that too.

Maybe its been a while since I've used it, or maybe its just the fact that games on Linux I would have used it with don't use the DRM.

Embedded Gecko never really caught on. KHTML (aka Webkit / Blink) is really the only option without doing a ton of work.

                Also there is this:
                https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-users-windows-7-8-and-81-moving-extended-support
                >Firefox version 115 will be the last supported Firefox version for users of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
                >Mozilla will provide security updates for these users until September 2024. No security updates will be provided after that date.
So you're already running an old version of a browser, and security updates end in less than a year.
Nobody can support an OS that is abandoned by its vendor.

No company is going to keep supporting a platform abandoned by its vendor, and there is no community that can support Windows 7 either.
Sooner or later you're going to have to accept that the community of users interested in maintaining a good OS are all using Linux.
Everyone who isn't, either bought into Apple's platform, or bent over for Microsoft.

It is true, you can probably keep that up for another year or two past the EOL, but sooner or later you're going to find you are having to do the same kind of things people like me were doing to get stuff working on Linux 10 years ago, but without the community of users and the access to the system that we benefited from back then.
Linux users can actually build a better platform and make it work. Windows 7 is never going to come back, and Microsoft is never going to change for the better.

They made their own seperate chinese client and have sales targeting chinese users occasionally.

well. i dont know. it doesnt let you search games that way. you have to click on a game in the "new releases" section to actually see the date it was added, and some of these are a few months old.

Yeah, Timmy did. The idea was to force enough people to go to his platform for something you couldn't get elsewhere, that it would naturally become self-perpetuating.
He's such a fucking dumbass though, that he thought he was smarter than what, 500 or more years of mercantile wisdom about the customer needing to come first, even if only superficially? He decided hey, fuck the people who I'm trying to get to spend money. They don't matter - only the people publishing these games need to be catered to!
There was never any avoiding EGS falling on its face. The only question was how long fortnite and UE can keep it afloat.

I love Tim but his launcher is SLOW. I don't particularly care about Steam's social features but you need some basic features like profiles and chat when you have several online games (fortnite, fall guys etc.). also you don't necessarily need to copy Steam. you need innovation. Tim is absolutely based for actually investing in gaming creation but he needs to make his launcher more fun.

Strongarming yourself into a video game market doesn't really work. Xbox 360 tried with the japanese market, and a bunch of exclusives did them no good either.

Exclusives only work if there's no community. No one identifies as a Netflix or Disney+ user....it's just some service people pay to stream crap from. Steam is a lot more than a store now, and people don't want to deal with another community

Then he said the reason for the EGS was to make PC gaming great again by saving it from Valve's monopoly or something.
And they do that by making it shittier for the end users with no user reviews or anything because "the game companies will decide, game users will just have to put up with it."
It's like he's trying to sabotage Tencent's efforts on purpose. Like how Branden has done far more damage to America in just 3 years than what agents of China, Russia, and various other enemies could've only dreamed of during in their entire lifetimes.

One of the thousand pieces of bullshit you get with Prime is a bunch of random lootboxes and the world's shittiest version of Humble Monthly - https://gaming.amazon.com/home . Literally no one knows about it or uses it.

Not completely true. Most of it's garbage. But you have to keep checking because they give away good triple AAA's on occasion

I've gotten a few things out of it and it's not like I wouldn't have Prime anyways but goddamn. The launcher is also a weird vestigial thing that doesn't really make sense. You'd think it'd be integrated into the Amazon storefront or something so you could buy games off it, but nope.

they give away a bunch of Neo Geo games, but I've never bothered downloading their DRM client to play them

Yeah I don't get it either. If they wanted to use it as an actual draw (for the three people on the planet who don't use Prime for shipping, but could still be convinced to buy it), they should get more recent and higher prestige games. If they just want it to be a dumping ground for shit like all the SNK games so they can say "there's free video games", why get the 5-10 year old titles as well? And then there's also the wordle microgame stuff and that's even weirder.

I don't know why they have a separate website for Amazon Gaming either.
You'd think they'd have everything integrated with Amazon proper and have their own Steam set up to sell games digitally.
Maybe it's just not on the table for them right now? dunno
I really don't want to install their desktop DRM to play anything. I don't even like having to install Epic just to play Rage 2. I'm really just trying to never use EGS forever

Same on all counts. At this point the only reason I'd ever use EGS is because I want to use some mods for KH3 and I don't know if they work on pirated copies. I know the KH2 rando mod doesn't work with the pirated PC version.

And as far as Amazon not wanting to compete with Steam directly, I can understand them not wanting to piss Valve off given how many of the games Amazon publishes are on steam like New World and Lost Ark. They already shat the bed with Crucible, no use in making enemies.

I got Dead Island 2 and Calisto Protocol free with the AMD bundle with my vidya card.
Dead Island 2 was a key on EGS. So I just never played it :/

I think you're right maybe they either want to keep a working relationship with DRM platforms. maybe they're just too preoccupied with their streaming content, or with trying to put UPS out of business or something

its just there to tick a box. tons of companies do this, so when they present their stuff to something large they can put "and games!". thats it. microsoft did (still does) this forever. remember zune, remember windows phones, windows mobile, yadda yadda. its a small loss that might be the straw that pushes forward a massive deal that will make it all back. it sounds retarded when you consider its like hundreds of millions of dollars a year, but is it really when it might of got you a government contract thatll make multiple billions back?

it's unrelated but I always thought Microsoft had what it took to conquer the mobile OS market. they had the platform everyone already loved. but instead Google and Apple drink their milkshake. oh well. some minor UI tweaks to literally just copy Androids icons on a wallpaper background and they could have done it imo. microsoft, such dummies

really? it never seemed like it to me, even though i personally wanted a windows os phone back then. even had one of the main team leaders of windows mobile stay at our house like 15 years ago and i was joking i could save phones right then and there if i just killed him in his sleep.
it probably would of been pretty shit if windows won, but alteast we wouldnt be fucking around with whole entire different os's while trying to get shit on our phones working with computers.

They got their hands burned by the antitrust lawsuits for bundling hardware and software, and eyes were on them in particular. They weren't able to create exactly the sort of walled garden apple ended up cultivating because they'd already done it before on PC.

The UI was the least of their issues, the tile shit that got such a bad reputation on Windows 8 actually translated extremely well to the phone screen. The main issue is that Microsoft was a couple of years late into the market and they were the eternally uncool Microsoft going against Apple (you know the drill) and Google (who were still high on the "don't be evil" reputation of the 00's), so they never managed to gain the critical mass needed to take a proper chunk out of the market. It didn't help that they only ever really had Elop-era Nokia making proper devices for them, everyone else just kinda half-assed some extremely limited runs into the market that nobody bought.

The things is that now that I see Windows 11, and where things have gone, I'm glad it never happened. If they'd won the mobile war it would just have meant that things would have gotten worse and worse on the mobile market.
I wanted to have windows on my phone, but I was thinking of Windows 7 back then when I say this, not this monstrosity OS they've been pushing since Windows 8. I never liked tiles, desktop or otherwise (which is why I use the Classic Shell mod for my Windows 10). But I'll take Android on it's worst day over that dumpster crap

Well as long as fortnite makes money the store can sustain
Honestly I don't know what they can do to be profitable at this point, they make around $30-40 million from 3rd party games a year and their crazy spending plus costs to run the service puts them in the red for like over 10 years at this point.
Even if they stopped spending it won't reach profitable for well over two decades unless user spending increases substantially

The 30/70 revenue share. On Steam, developers basically pay 30% of their revenue to stay on the platform, doesn't matter if they're AAA trash like Ubishart or irrelevant Indie studios. On EGS Indies get a much better deal, in exchange for having no audience whatsoever since 99.99% of EGS's users are retarded Fortnite addicts who play nothing but it.

if you believe the shitposts, tencent owns the most and timmy might actually be just an unwillingly pawn. it coulda sorta make sense, why hes seemingly acting so stupid. its not actually him, its tencent, and tencents worth like 376 billion so throwing him and his company under the bus is really just pennies to them.

tencent takes 55% of the cut on their own store. they dont actually care that steam takes 30%, they just might want to erode valves market share so they can slip right in.

I hope you guys keep using EGS claiming all those free games cause every game claimed increases the counter which potentially means Epic has to pay more to the devs - as usually the pay depends on how many games end up being claimed.

They probably could as well if they had better marketing.
The only thing they had to do is capture new blood over old blood. Nobody in their right mind is going to switch from steam over to epic just because. But for kids who don't have a steam account, its more likely to make a epic account to play games on there. Eventually those kids would grow up, and be the same kind of audience as steam drones. But that would take time, and in todays business world you have to grow 195% every quarter or you are deemed unprofitable and get all funding pulled.

To me its puzzling how EGS could fuck up so badly.
Look at fucking steam. I mean objectively look at it. Its clunky, it runs like shit. Clicking on store sometimes does not work and just keeps you on your library. At times it wont load the store properly. The forums are a joke and its attrocious to mod them.
And it took them like 20 years to get there. All sweeney had to do is build up a solid platform, one that works, and has all, and i mean ALL of the basic features. How the fuck can you launch a store without a goddamn shopping basket... iirc that was a feature EGS was missing at launch? I mean sure, I can understand missing a feature like the workshop... but they couldn't even get the most basic features shipped on a storefront that is supposed to cater to literally millions.

What's more ridiculous is that even now, after everything that's happened, he still has no real plans to improve the store or offer any of the features steam does. Epicbros where do we go from here ? It's obvious that Epic is the better storefront since it gives us free games. Honestly it's quite disheartening seeing it fail, I even made threads quite often against Steam so that the public opinion would shift towards hating that dogshit store (that, remind you, doesn't even give us free games). I hate steamies so much, we could've gotten free AAA games like GTA5 every month but now we're only getting scraps... Think about it, GTA6 free on release only on Epic Games Store !
Hope based Tim doesn't give up and continues pressing forward and slowly eating away at Steam, that way we can secure even more free games.
