Exclusives aren't the reason. Being a handheld and also having the most total games of any non-PC system are what matter. Anti-consumer skloosibs are a drop in the bucket.

Like 60-70% of all games sold on Switch are first party games.
It's the third party sales that's just a bonus for Nintendo.

      >>ps5 has half dozen exclusives
      No it fricking doesn't.
It has Spiderman 2, which was leaked to come to PC later this year and is already in a playable state due to the files in the Insomniac leak.
Rise of the Ronin will come to PC since it flopped hard and Team Ninja brings all their games to PC.
Stellar Blade flopped too and is just a matter of months.

And right now, every single ANNOUNCED Sony game, like Marathon, Concord or Fairgames, or the Until Dawn remake, are launching DAY ONE on the PC.

Then there's also the news about Squeenix today, FF was always timed, but now we get the games much sooner AND all the upcoming FF games will be day one on PC and no longer PS exclusive.

      SONY IS DEAD!

You keep making the same thread, you get the same effort post.

It's simply the final consequence of the highly iterative nature of the creative process combined with catastrophically inept management.

    >be game dev at company
    >want to make game
    >hear about some people putting together a pitch for game
    >get on that team
    >work on the pitch for 2 years
    >it's all new and exciting and late night brain storming sessions
    >pitch looks good and gets green lit
    >now work on the proof of concept
    >a year later the proof of concept looks good and management agrees
    >start preproduction
    >arguing and fighting and debating the direction and tone of the game
    >liveforthisshit.exe
    >2 years later we have the game nailed down and go into full asset production
    >another 2 years and the game is about to go into late alpha
    >hit some snags, people leave, others join - upper management too
    >another year and finally hit beta
    >now it's all bug hunt and optimization
    >need 2 more years to really be ready
    >we only get 1
    >game is good but far from content complete or well optimized

That's exactly how you end up with games that take 10 years to make and still release in a broken and unfinished state. Devs slacking off and management that gives them enough rope to hang themselves with.

This is probably the most misunderstood video game related quote of all time
    And it's mostly Phil's fault

He wasn't saying Xbox was giving up on making good games and attracting customers that way (even though that's pretty much where Xbox ended up), he's basically saying that the advent of digital libraries have made it basically impossible to "flip" customers from one platform to another.
So like back in the day you'd have people trading in their N64 and all their games for a brand new PS2. But now that just doesn't really happen - in his words even if Starfield had come out and been the greatest game ever made sure some people would buy into Xbox but nobody would abandon the PS5 and their whole PS4/5 library for it for it, and therefore it is impossible for Xbox to pass PS5 and "win the generation" just buy making great games.

The irony is though that since he's said this, I'm sure a ton of people have sold their Xbox to buy a PS5

      >Can't resell games anymore
      >People stop trading in their games
      Go fricking figure
Part of it is also that the actual consumer base is grown up now and that game tech has stagnated, new games are less thrilling so people are less enthusiastic about buying them, and since they still have their old consoles they fall back on old games when they get bored instead of buying some new game they barely know about. Despite that, people are still eager to buy new consoles and even multiple consoles per generation, but the money isn't in hardware or even software anymore so it doesn't matter much.

well right, and everything you said is true
but the bigger issue (for Phil) is that Xbox shit the bed during the Xbox One generation and that was the most important generation to win for console manufacturers because that was where most gamers switched to digital and starting building up a big digital library

long story short he was basically trying to say that Game Pass is a vehicle for them to provide a lot of value to gamers without having to directly compete with Sony on a game to game basis (basically, Nintendo's blue ocean strategy but with a gay subscription as it's foundation) but he really came across in this interview as saying "Xbox is fricked, we're on borrowed time as we circle the drain"

This is where being able to get away with spouting bullshit comes in handy. You don't ever want to say that you're trying to do anything except provide customers with a great experience. At this point you can't even say it in confidence due to leakers.

Why should I care for digital libraries when Playstation, Sony, and Nintendo shutdown entire shops? Don't get me wrong I get Phill's point but if I were to care about any digital library it would probably be on PC where I can make my own

Every single AAA publisher has like, pure guess here, 5 or 10 projects in the pipeline in various stages of development of which the vast majority will never get announced and/or scrapped before they even hit alpha. Remakes, reboots, spin offs, sequels, prequels of everybodys favorite franchises.

That's the problem with vidya development, and my reason for this post, in general. It's extremely inefficient. If development(pre-prod) on the next BattleElderFalloutCreedRecon(the biggest game ever made) was to start today but the whole iterative process was already taken care of, so the team and everybody involved already knew EXACTLY the type of game it's supposed to be, it would be done in 3 years plus another 6 months for optimization. How do you think they can pump out a CoD every year(rotating studios, 3 years of effective development time) without it being a buggy mess that runs like ass? Because they know the process, they have a clear and strong vision. Their form of iteration is a game mode that reuses all assets, all maps and all mechanics in a different way. When other projects iterate they scrap the whole game. That's how you end up with 8-10 years of development of which maybe 4 were used efficiently.

Maaaybe Double Fine, though i'd expect their games to be on the very low budget side so MS probably ignores them.
I could see Compulsion too, their prior games were never even good critically and if South of Midnight doesn't impress at their upcoming june show it's probably OVER for them.

exclusives exist for a reason, spreading yourself thin via multiplatform hurts more than it gains too
why the frick I would buy xbox or PS5 without anything to play on them but my old ps4 and 360 library? I have PS4 and 360 for that.
Switch has games, so I got it.

That's not true. If I believed for a second that Sony was going to be putting out more exclusives like Stellar Blade - as in, tiddy games - I would be driving up to GameStop to buy a PS5 right fricking now. Because X-box is completely sterile and has pretty much no games with cute girls on it. I have an X-box for GamePass, but it's a tiddy desert.
