Do you really do "non-game" related stuff though? What do you do there that you can't already do with your phone?

Also not directed at you specifically, but do you all think your PCs can match a next gen console? Unless you have 3080s I dont see how this would be a better option.

do zoomers really? You can't do anything useful on a phone. I could maybe get by with just a laptop, but I prefer to spend as little money on laptops as possible since they are breakable and could be stolen. But with a desktop I can have as much cheap storage as I want, a graphics card for machine learning, upgradable everything, cheap ram, etc.
          >but do you all think your PCs can match a next gen console?
no but it's a moot point because I'm not going to go buy a $500 console and a bunch of $60 games. PC gaming ends up being much cheaper for me, because I continue using the same PC case and power supply until it breaks, and only upgrade components as needed. And I only buy games on sale.

The only downside to PC gaming is the lack of physical games. But consoles seem to be phasing that out anyway.

Console games stopped being physical, so the only difference between console/PC is if I want to be forced to buy a new system every so many years. I'd rather have the system where I can still play games decades from now, rather than needing to buy them again in a remaster package.
I'm also going to be using my computer for a lot more than just video games, so upgrades on my PC matter a lot more in my life than buying a different console with various numbers after its name.

      >Modding
There's also this. PC has games you can just buy and possess the game files. You can install them and modify them however you want, and no Big Daddy is looking over your shoulder to approve of what you do. I don't need to worry about Nintendo or Sony or even Steam getting upset and trying to throw a ban at me regardless of how I want to mess around with the files.

I'm open to going out of my "comfort zone". Big fan or racing games and arcadey style games (I'm talking SSX 3, NFL Blitz, Power Stone, Viewtiful Joe type stuff), but I'm open to looking into RPGs and RTSs if that helps.

I'm not really into racing games, so can't help you with those. I did enjoy Underground 2 and Most Wanted back in the day
            >arcadey
There's obviously shmups. Touhou being the big one, but you also have smaller indie stuff like ZeroRanger
            >RPGs
You've got a big selection here. I'll start with the first-person ones
If you want great writing and atmosphere, VTMB stands as a classic that withstood the test of time. System Shock 2 is another great one, and there's of course Deus Ex
Next are isometric hack 'n slash games. There's Diablo 2, Path of Exile, Titan Quest and Grim Dawn
If you want over the shoulder camera, Witcher 1 is my favourite one, and Gothic's also a classic
Isometric CRPGs are a PC staple. My favourite one overall would be Underrail, though it's probably a horrible first entry point - it doesn't frick around. Divinity:OS 1 is a good place to get into the genre. Its writing sucks, but the gameplay's on point. PS:T on the other hand, even with all its dicksucking, is a bad place to start given its unfun combat
JRPGs are traditionally a console genre, but even they have some PC exclusives. Crystal Project is a pretty good one, especially if you like nonlinearity and job systems. The others are mostly H-games, of which some are pretty damn fun even if you were to ignore their porn aspects. Sengoku Rance and Black Souls come to mind as probably the best H-games
            >RTS
Try Starcraft 1&2 for this one, as well as Age of Empires 2. I remember W40k: Dawn of War and LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth games being really fun, especially if you enjoy their settings
I could never get into Total War games, so can't comment on those, but it's a popular series
If you're a storygay, Lobotomy Corporation is also technically a real-time strategy, though a REALLY unusual one. It's closer to a management game really. It has one of my favourite stories in vidya
And if you'd like to try turn-based strategies, there's HoMM 3/5, Disciples 2, XCOM, Battle for Wesnoth

First, I've not heard of ZeroRanger but I'm DEFINITELY on board with looking more into what smaller developers and indie teams have on the arcadey front. I am familiar with Rollerdrome which looked fantastic, so indie offerings are definitely good to go for me. Also your list of games is very overwhelming in the best possible way. Is there a minimum spec I should be looking into?

Sorry for asking all these basic questions. Tax refund came in and I'm thinking of actually doing this.

As in, what PC to buy? It really depends on you, half the fun of building your PC is adjusting it to whatever your needs are. You could probably buy a cheap $200 used desktop and use it to run old games exclusively. You could also splurge a thousand bucks and run all the newest stuff at high settings. Just make sure you build a proper desktop, and not a laptop. Avoid prebuilds, it's always better to assemble it yourself
When it comes to smaller arcadey games, I highly recommend Post Void and Devil Daggers+Hyper Demon if you like FPS games. Short runs, really fast, and there's the high score aspect. I somewhat enjoyed Ubermosh
There was this one indie sidescroller game that looked really good, but I fricking lost it somewhere, and for the life of me I cannot find it. I did find Steel Assault in the process of searching for it though, and it looks fun, might give it a go myself

Thank you for this. My idea was to actually buy a pre built PC but I'll take your advice. I'm going to do this, but I can't promise I'll do a great job on it and I'm hoping it won't get too expensive if I frick something up in the process. Regardless of all that, thank you again for your help in this. Also thanks to everyone else in the thread too. I'm anxious and nervous, but I guess "excited" to try my hand at "building" a PC. I also highly doubt its "like LEGOs" but thats fine.

Have a great rest of your day man and same to the other anons. Thanks again.

It is exactly like legos + wires that are labeled that you need to stick into the right slot. It's breddy easy mate, still do watch a youtube tutorial though. Assembly of your CPU cooler might also be a bit tricky but apart from that any ape can build a PC.

It is like legos, but you can frick it up and bend pins on your mobo and cost yourself a bunch of money if you frick up. Prebuilts in general are pretty fine these days, you're just paying a markup for someone to assemble them for you. Building your own is cheaper the majority of the time but if you're okay with paying an $100 idiot fee, prebuilts get the job done.

                Anonymous

Most prebuilds are not fine, especially not the ones by big names, like dell or hp. They suck hard when it comes to cooling most of the time. They also use very low end motherboards, storage and RAM so their prices aren't even comparable to self build machines, unless you go for bottom of the barrel components in that regard. Only good prebuilds are the ones by system builders and they usually mark them up like 20-30%.

                Anonymous

Don't forget the awful power supplies that prebuilts include which will often crap out on you. When you build your own PC you can get a decent one.

                Anonymous

The ones by companies that allow you to chose the parts and assemble them for you like ibuypower, cyberpowerpc and whatever the hell else there might be now were generally fine. Even stuff from their brands being sold on other sites end up being acceptable, much better than products from Dell or HP. But yeah, there is typically some catch even with those where you might need to replace the RAM because they try to frick you with 8GB for some reason if it's a true prebuitl and not you customizing a build on their website. People are still better off doing it themselves but if they're not confident in their ability to do so, I think those options are fine.

I was so nervous about it the first time I built one, ended up being easy. Just go slow, follow a video guide and maybe ask someone if you get stuck/unsure(this is probably not going to happen)

And afterwards you feel satisfied that you put it together and didn't pay some moron to half ass it for you.

Next you will start building your own guns.

I'm almost 30, busy with work, (that I need a beefy PC for anyway), and mostly play games with friends. I don't like mainstream shooters or MOBAs and I mostly play party games or old multiplayer games like AoE2 with just a few friends. I'm on a discord call with my friend group when I play games because I can stream and they do the same. I didn't play Hogwarts legacy but I watched a few friends play. It's not about performance or stuff for me- it's just easier to socialize on PC. Although I do have a switch and I think it's an amazing console. I would have gotten a Steam Deck too but I heard it's a bit unwieldy. Never understood the switch memes either. The console is designed to be played while you grope your girlfriend and the games are simple enough that you can just put the console down at any time and get busy.

I grew up with NES, SNES, Master System, PS1+PSone, PC, N64, GBC, GBA, PS2, GC, PSP and finally my last console X360.

One obvious reason to stick to PC is emulation whether you like it or not. But other than that. The 360 was my last because I realized that consoles were not worth it anymore. The PS2 was the last time I felt happy with a game library. Most games I loved on the Cube were multiplats, DC ports and a few Nintendo exclusives. The 360 I got because it was advertised as THE new JRPG console: Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, The Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4, Infinite Undiscovery, Resonance of Fate, Tales of Vesperia and some others. I loved that and there was obviously GTA4. So what happened? Not even a year after I got the 360 most JRPGs got ported to PS3 with Director's Cut releases. I was pissed off. All I had left were LO and BD which I liked but didn't justify the 360. I randomly got Gears of War 1 and loved it, got 2 also and loved it. Hated 3 and stopped there.

The 360 was also when I realized that I didn't like the new DLC system for all games. I bought the DLCs for my games but it felt wrong. Since then I haven't bought any and I don't even buy games anymore that have any DLC because it feels like I don't own the full game. The 360 was actually the console I have the 3rd most games for (over 40 retail + some digital) but when I look at my shelf and ask myself "If I had to pick 3/5/10 of these and ditch the rest which..." my "large" 360 collection is easy mode. PS2 and even my tiny GC collection are hard to pick games for. PS1 and retro are even more brutal.

So the 360 library for me was rather bad. And looking at PS4/XBone/WiiU or the latest gen this is even worse. Most everything I'd want to play is already on PC. I can't name a single PS4/5 or Xbone/XBOX game I'm missing out on. Switch has a few but whatever I can live without them. And all old games not Xbox can be emulated if not natively on PC. Why pay $500 for a brick?

It's a centralized gaming hub, it's comfy. That being said it does come with faults and it keeps getting pricier, not to say that there isn't any budget builds but idk, if you're someone who moves around a lot then PC gaming would be an inconvenience i guess.

    >why do you choose that as your main gaming platform?
90% more games, almost every other platforms games, more free games on average, better quality graphics, can choose controller or m/kb on the fly, most of my friends have pcs, etc.

    can do more with it.

    >Can you do explain this without naming "emulation"?
What is it with console users and only thinking emulation is good if their company lets them pay for it?
I swear to fricking god, every time its
    >"UGH, SOULLESS"
    >"THE GAME WASN'T MEANT TO RUN AT A HIGHER RESOLUTION WITH WIDESCREEN, YOU'RE RUINING THE ARTISTIC INTENT"
    >"IT LOOKS BEST ON REAL HARDWARE, FRICK YOU."
Then their favorite company does a re-release running on an emulator and its suddenly
    >"OH MY FRICKING GOD THANK YOU [COMPANY]"
    >"THE GAME LOOKS SO CLEAN NOW RUNNING AT A HIGHER RES AND THE WIDESCREEN LOOKS SO GREAT!"

It's nice to have everything on one machine and be able to customize everything as I see fit. Even better if it has Steam Cloud so I can game on the go with my Deck seamlessly. I have consoles, but most of them don't hit 1080p, much less 1440p ultrawide so the picture on them is always blurry. Being able to get big SSDs to store everything with good loading speeds is nice too.

And finally VR+dicky mods are a treat.

Consoles don't have a single game worth playing that isn't already on PC.

I also don't believe it'll get a port, but emulation is inevitable and you can bet your ass, this is one of the first ones they'll put in most effort to try and get running.

    >What is 2+2? And dont say 4.
    I will never understand this
Yeah it's emulation. I can play any game ever released since the start of computer gaming in the 70s.
Shit like romhacks and mods too.

      >any game
With how constant loading stutters and first playthrough shader comp stutter has fricked up newer games, I'm gonna say not to this point. I do say though, every game worth playing runs better on PC.
      >no need for physical media taking up space in my apartment
Not necessarily a plus. Physical collections are nice imo.

PC used to have genres not available on consoles years ago and I enjoyed them so PC ended up becoming my platform of choice. These days PC is a lot worse than its glory days, the only thing that sets it apart from consoles are the porn games and VR.

I do like having mouse/keyboard as an option as well as any and every controller though and sometimes mods can be cool, especially when they add back removed content so you can get the original experience. Recently I've found myself using the PS5 more for new releases because it runs them better and it's nice to have some physical copies of games again after being a PCgay for years and being used to everything being digital only. I think the last physical PC game that I actually bought was Wrath of the Lich King. I got gifted Dishonored after that and the box contained a Steam key and nothing else.

But once consoles go digital only too, I'll probably go back to buying games mostly on PC as long as devs get their shit together by then.

Can play games that I bought 15 years ago and games that I bought two days ago on the same system. Games have more settings. I get more choice on my input device. I like the flexibility.
Plus Steam allows you to change your store region easily which is good for me since my year is split between two continents.

initially to fit in with Ganker, which is very gay I am well aware.

That said, 60 fps was a thing and it felt good, so I kept with it. Also most games have a PC port now.

    PC platform is like Goodwill.
It's a dumping ground for old stuff, and it's sold for cheap, sometimes even given away for free for special cases
