    It has good music
    Metal Sonic is cool
This version of Amy is cool
    The FMV cutscenes are cool
Palmtree Panic is a good level

Now with that out of the way time traveling is a terrible executed mechanic and the level design beyond the first level is terrible
Also not a fan of those weird special stages
Sonic 1 has very similar problems so I think of it as a sidegrade vs the full blown upgrade that is Sonic 2
3 builds on what 2 did as opposed to CD so don't go into it expecting more of that

Those cutscenes coupled with the Sonic OVA anime that came put later are forever ingrained in my mind as the best image for Sonic. I could handle the cheesy cringe from Adventure, up until about Generations. Something about how they animate and characterize Sonic looks like something pulled out of a children's TV show. I hate it. The whole series needs a hard reboot, and I DO NOT mean like BOOM.

Starting with Colors they made Sonic's animations very rigid and stiff for some reason, when he's supposed to be agile and fluid.

They changed the japanese writers for western garden gnomes after Black Knight which is why Sonic stopped being himself.
Now they changed those into the gay comic writer that's trying to shoehorn lesbians into the game's canon.

Christ, is that quote real? I already knew Black Knight was the last time the series had decent writing until some bits of Frontiers but I didn't realize it was down to one new guy being this bad at his job. I'll take Flynn any day because he at least comes off as a fan.

A decent amount of 1 on 1 character interaction that felt genuine. A little too much name dropping and a couple scenes kill the mood with a joke (mostly Island 3, the worst overall by far), but it's a huge step up from any post-Black Knight story. I also generally liked Sage.

I liked the Amy stuff. Felt like she finally got something that followed up on her Adventure 1 "I need to be more dependent" instead of spinning her wheels for decades. She believably grew up more than Tails did (again Island 3 was mostly mistakes across the board).

I don't have the original interview and it doesn't have any references to easily look it up. But for how bad the writing was it may as well be real.
Ian is an improvement but still a far cry from how Sonic should be. Too reliant on references and everyone speaks like a marvel character now. Plus Shadow is still screwed over, Ian blames the mandates but Shadow still acts like himself in japanese scripts so I don't trust that to be accurate.

A lot of the "Sorry guys, mandates, hands are tied" stuff is about Ian wanting to do something, Sega's standards not gelling with it, and giving up entirely instead of reconsidering things based on those guidelines. Shadow's just the best example. People say Sega "wants Shadow to be Vegeta," but that's more a consequence of Ian trying to accommodate Sega's requests without rethinking how he approaches the character.

sorry, but no, that horrible level design on advance and rush, sonic rush was full of pits just for the sake of it, jumping to a platform was a leap of faith, and advance, thanks to the platforms being out of frame, was pretty much the same design mess.
Don't get me started on how awful the music sounded on the advance games, i don't know if it was the console soundchip, but was horrible, i would like to hear demo versions of those tracks. Also i love Hideki Naganuma's work, but it was too jarring for a sonic game, so rush music is ok, but still out of place

Oshima sided with everyone else on Balan Wonderworld, agreeing to oust Naka from the project and just finish the game. Naka felt betrayed because they launched the Balan project together.

I don't blame Oshima, given Naka abused Oshima's staff flagrantly. He probably assumed Naka had grown as a person over the last 20 years.

Naka got fired from his own project for being comically awful at his job. Listed grievances include

          >Threatening the careers of employees when they gave feedback.
          >Telling employees to break labor laws and work seven days a week.
          >Trying to convince Square staff to let him con an outsourcing studio (bring them on the project without a contract and then not actually pay them).
