I would prefer the bottom simply because it isn't a fricking Japanese company. Remember reading somewhere that their work culture is finally getting off of that "working your employees to actual suicide and enforcing stupid unwritten rules that will kill your career if not followed" but there's still enough companies there that function in that older style for me to say no thanks to any position in that country.

why? how does this happen? japan is misogynistic as frick.

where are all the good western women in the industry?

Women are dramatically more misogynistic. Any woman that accomplishes things in the west gets torn down by other women or supposed white knights ironically enough.
This is exacerbated when female diversity hires enter the picture, since they usually have nothing going for them other than the sudden ability to power-trip with no consequence.

There are more changes than just work ethic. In America you have more specialists for developer roles but in Japan afaik everyone is basically a generalist and does a bit of everything. In America you have a modeller, animater etc, you do both in Japan afaik. The american way is probably superior. A lot of japanese games are poorly crafted even if the ideas are good

A lot of these commodities and "ability to good off" corporations throw at you to give the illusion of a happy, comfy workplace are in reality cost-cutting measures they implement because it's cheaper than giving you meaningful work benefits like more comprehensive health insurance, flexible vacation days, paternity leave, or career progression. It's a smoke and mirrors operation for people who can be easily won over by creature comforts.

As far as consumers are concerned, we don't give a shit because time and time again, a lax work environment has not translated to better quality games. That isn't to say that a stricter work environment produces better games, either - but we only care about better games, so we don't care about the experience of the devs unless we develop a fondness for them over a career of good productions.

There are a few, usually from older dev teams, or on the writing side, such as Amy Hennig or Jennifer Hepler (funnily enough some people assumed they wrote the shitty stuff on some of their later games but if you looked at the credits/who wrote whats, wasn't really the case. For Hennig, Druckman just kinda said nah, we're going with my moronic ideas and shut her down). Comparatively though, yea, not nearly as many in the west, or at least, not of fame/peerage, which could be for myriad reasons.

I actually can't think of a single game I've played in the past couple years that was made in california. The main game I play is made in new zealand, then there's bethesda slop which is in Maryland, a few Japanese games of course, some eurojank, and then indies which are all over the place but interestingly almost never form california.

The only way you'd play calislop is if you play mainstream AAA trash from EA, actiblizzard, sony, etc.
