I don't think very many people explicitly hate 7, but people who didn't play it as a child generally rate it lower than the previous titles because the 8bit games are more broadly appealing, so the extremist nature of this board (And vidya discourse in general, I guess) translates that to "It fricking sucks".

The actual reason is that most Megaman fans never played MM7 on an SNES. They played it for the first time on the dogshit Anniversary Collection with the reversed controls and shitty emulation.

Final Fantasy didn’t waste no time moving to SNES the moment it came out, Dragon Quest too although the fourth game was on NES. I believe Megaman stuck on NES because they were cheap to make and they were probably more comfortable with the NES, from 4, 5 and 6 you could see the backgrounds gettting better and more detailed unlike the flat colors of 1, 2 and 3.

8 has some great design. For example there is a cog that requires the use of three subweapons. That's fukkin great and it's something that the classic series never did again. Also it's great to have two atk buttons, and icons on your sub bar to better remember wtf you have equipped.
8 still has bad stuff thou, an example are cog themselves, you can't know in your first run that you will not be able to buy everything, and you can make your run harder with this noob trap.

It's because it's not funny, it's not fun. Put a challenge that actually will make the player want to overcome and will be remembered fondly, put a challenge that the player just want to be done with as fast as he can you get the jump slide level that nobody fricking likes. The Jet Stingray level is almost guilty of this but gets away being just forgettable.

some good points here. I think this is why people get an awful first impression of 7. A lot of design choices test your patience, other ones not mentioned are story pacing, intro takes forever, museum stage is pointless, cutscenes are just text boxes and Dr. Light's boring Weapon Get dialog (which is actually more entertaining in the Japanese version).

After the years though, I look back at 7 and remember it's gimmicks and set pieces fondly. 7 is so different than the first 6, you really have to set your expectations different as well. I think 7 prioritized presentation over gameplay, they figured jump and shoot works just fine so let's zoom in and show more detail, which aged like piss with today's ADHD audience. In the end it's still a great experience with some of my favorite boss fights, but it'll always be different, which isn't bad.

A lot of these boil down to you rushing through the game and not being able to time jumps and attacks correctly. The secrets are a by-product of these games being made first and foremost by Japanese kids, who actually like to share real secrets and trivia with each other about video games.

        >the most difficult final boss in all the classic series has no excuse
        >Nintendo power secrets has no excuse, but it's nearly OK because that was the trend to sell guides

Again, love anything you want, but if we need to place classic games on a podium 7 it's in the bottom of the barrel.

          Anonymous

The bullet sponge is not a problem, you can easily kill them, you just need to shoot faster.
          >5 Second Stun one i agree, it is pure bushit, and the reason why the final boss is dumb hard.
          >Rush search is also dumb, even that you need it for some itens, it is just dumb and slow.
          >Final boss is hard for the wrong reason. Agree
The secrets being hard to find, i agree, but back in the day, everygame was like that, it took me 4 years by playing Donkey Kong Country 2 to find all bonus levels without a guide.
The only problem with the game to me is the final boss, that is why i generally only play until the final level. I do the same thing with X-Man Mutant Apocalypse, that Magneto fight has the same problem, it is just to grindy to kill him.

            Anonymous

Imo is not just a 'shoot faster' problem, it's a pacing issue.
The game fills like a slog because not only we are very zoomed in, but every enemy takes almost double the shots from previous games (playing all classic back to back this is super evident).
I could agree that a slow mega gameplay can be great (even if every series has a dash for a reason), but that kind of design is just boring. Funnily enough 7 it's not even a short game; It's just blockbuster syndrome, let's give enemies 200% health and an impossible final boss so kids need more time to finish it.

          >Rush Search
Literally there for you to comb the levels after you've mastered them. Also, it takes about 10 seconds for him to be deployed, sniff something, and then dig it up. I know the dog's name is Rush, but slow down

Just don't get hit it's not an argument. It could be an argument if it's was a super slow/telegraphed projectile. Even a 3s stun would be a kick in the balls, 5s it's just infuriating.
In general we can argue about that, but at the seventh mainline game we know that megaman it's not punishing like that.

            >Rush Search
            >Literally there for you to comb the levels after you've mastered them. Also, it takes about 10 seconds for him to be deployed, sniff something, and then dig it up. I know the dog's name is Rush, but slow down
10s it's a lot to be standing around doin nothing. Not only that, but Search needs a very VERY specific place to dig. So sometimes you need to dig more than once for secrets, and more than once in the hope of a refill. It's super bad when Eddie in previous games was almost instantaneous. 8 for ex fixed this.

            >secrets
            >They were not made to sell guides; they were made to be extra content. Some of the Armour Capsules are just as hard to find, but you don't ever hear anyone say the ruined an X game.
No dude, do a quick search on archive and you'll see tons and tons of jp guides starting from the nes era. You can also see game center episodes where those old guides are used.
Also, extra content a shit, since beside proto shield you need to be full stocked to kill wily.

I think the real problem here is that you're both from two different eras of gaming. One of you believes that games are a challenge and only worth playing if you ring out every single bit of their content and master them to the point of boredom. The other believes that games shouldn't be so challenging that they interfere with the fun or be too difficult for someone to beat their first go-round with no bells or whistles.

Also, no shit Japanese people had strategy guides. They're just as lazy as Americans when it comes to finding out secrets in a game.

Maybe. For me it's not even the challenge in itself but seeing blatant inflated numbers. You really nead more than a power shot to kill an helmet worker? As I said when you play them back to back you see this bullshit a mile away. Of course 7 wanted to be different, see that artstyle, but pacing in mm is always been fast. It's not even a situation like & bass where you have a powerup for your shot and a faster power charger

In any fanbase you will experience hate towards some titles.
I remember when Megaman Powered Up and Megaman Maverick Hunter X released on PSP, the Powered Up was hated because it was a 2.5D game with "baby looking" graphics and design, the game not only allow you to play with the 8 robot master + Roll + Protoman, but it also had an amazing level maker.
Mav Hunter X was hated because it didn't followed the same concepts an secrets of the og game.

Man the only thing I remember form that game was the terrible screen crunch and the absolute gauntlet of shit that was King's Fortress 2.
Playing as Megaman and NOT Bass was the mistake mind you.

I found the snes version very good. The most strange thing it's the fricked up boss order, and know to play as bass first.

I never really played the SNES version myself but I did hear it doesn't have the screen crunch issue which instantly made it better.
Bass was pretty fun to use too since the game almost feels like it was made for him and not Megaman.

I hope they give Mega Man another shot at a cartoon. I'll be damned if Fully Charged is the last one the blue bomber ever appears in.

    >movement is too slow
    >the sprite size compared to total screen size is much larger than the NES games, contributing to the slow movement and awkward level design
    >final boss is bullshit difficult
    that's why
