Amazon hopes to turn it into a Marvel-tier franchise. They're fricking insane. Tomb Raider hasn't been relevant for a long time even when it was under Square Enix. The only thing they can hope to do is make a few headlines making people angry with the dumb changes they'll definitely make, but that'll be it.

yep. tomb raider is a fricking dead franchise. the new games sold less and less with each new release to the point where square just wanted to be rid of it.
people who likes the Indiana Jones parts about cool tombs and treasure hunting moved on to Uncharted and lots of hot girls came along in games after Lara so they no longer have that going for them either, not to mention they uglified her in the new games.
there is practically nothing left in the franchise and amazon have no clue about how to make a mass appealing piece of media going by what happened with the rings of power fiasco.

Marvel like franchise imply that they gonna have some sort of Avengers style movie with video games characters.
Lara is a start, and I assume they gonna start buying more video games IPs to complete the cast.

Kek. Is Amazon self aware? Despite Prime video being the cheapest streaming option, it is barely relevant and their successful shows are only a success because they are pretty much anti-Marvel which obviously is not for everyone.

Well, the only good thing of all of this is that we can safely assume we will not see anything good or even decent from Tomb Raider in a really long time.

Is this shit even popular to anyone except normies?

Tomb Raider was never popular among normalgays no matter how you try to spin the history. Tomb Raider barely scratched success during the age of cereal mascot platforms thanks to the massive sexualization, legend trilogy flopped and Square Enix trilogy was only successful at the start thanks to Microsoft timed exclusive deal and how "mature" it was

By 2002 Tomb Raider games made Eidos over a billion dollars. Lara Croft was so popular she was featured on the cover of gaming magazines.

Not even Marvel fans want to be the "Marvel audience" anymore, interest in those movies peaked years ago and is in the process of crashing. And the Tomb Raider games were a huge success because of the following:
        >fast-paced, acrobatic platforming
        >nostalgic adventurism a la Indiana Jones
        >sexy protagonist

Nobody knows how to make the first type of game anymore, certainly not Amazon. There's a zero percentage chance Amazon will make a game that captures the feeling of the second point because they ALREADY TRIED THIS AND SCRAPPED THE PROJECT FOR BEING "RACIST", so yeah no hope at all of this in any way resembling the Tomb Raider of old. And finally, lol at the idea of Amazon making ANY female sexy.

Tomb Raider always kinda sucked and turning it into Uncharted under Square Enix's ownership was the biggest improvement it saw. The most notable thing about it was that Lara had breasts. Then I guess the reboot made it a ryona and snuff fetishist's wet-dream?

Either way I don't think Amazon can actually hurt it. I think they pissed away $600 million, personally.

It's insane to me that they're buying and selling these decades-old IPs for this much money yet can't produce anything even remotely popular with them. It's Amazon though, they have infinite money, so even if Tomb Raider winds up being a huge money pit that eventually costs them over a billion dollars (and it WILL) it's not gonna even make a dent in their bottom line.

Forspoken was profitable thanks to Sony exclusivity deal
And NFTs, despite being mostly forgotten at this point, are a low investment high profit business if you're the one creating them. Is enough if a couple of millionaires buy your shit just to collect them

        >And NFTs, despite being mostly forgotten at this point, are a low investment high profit business if you're the one creating them. Is enough if a couple of millionaires buy your shit just to collect them
It has zero growth potential. There is no real market for NFTs, no way to expand it. It's a fricking dead end.

I know, that's why I said that is enough if a couple of millionaires buy your shit, remember, millionaires are pretty dumb sometimes or just don't care about a couple of wasted millions.

            >I know, that's why I said that is enough if a couple of millionaires buy your shit,
Which means it's not something any huge corporation should have any interest in. These companies don't invest billions just to sit on a fixed income based on the interest of a few hundred people. They are interested in growth potential, in making more money next year than they did this year. That's the whole reason they went woke in the first place.

              Anonymous

Dude, you don't need that much money to create a NFT. The whole point of NFTs is that creators and marketplaces basically invested nothing yet thanks to the craze they could earn massive profits from buyers/re-sellers. That's why I don't blame Square Enix to still invest in NFTs, that investment is probably peanuts and they only need one millionaire wanting to waste some bucks to make a profit. If their NFTs don't sell, they don't even lose that much money. And finally, they're not as dumb as Ubisoft or Meta who wanted to integrate NFTs to their products and services.

Now we can officially bury the franchise. I know some have beef with the "rebooted" Lara, but they are good games even tho they copied the Ucharted and made the game more about action and less about exploring tombs, as the trilogy progressed.

I'll never understand the mindset of some of these companies. You have long standing, well known IPs like Tomb Raider with a bunch of pretty talented developers and instead of getting them to work on new games you just sell it all away to focus on NFTs which are basically dead in 2023 now. This must be one of those things where you refuse to admit you're wrong so you just double down on the moronation.

Basically somebody very high up at Squeenix bought into the NFT cult. Got conned super hard, basically. And so he's all in on NFTs because he thinks he has some kind of inside track before the "singularity" or the rapture or whatever they believe is going to happen to usher in the new age of web 3.0.

We know Crystal Dynamics is working on another TR game, and it’s supposedly coming out before Perfect Dark which would mean it was certainly greenlit by Square.

So Square knows they have another game in the series on the way, and they choose to sell the IP, the studio making it, and a bunch of other studios for a song?

What the frick were they thinking? This isn’t a rhetorical question, what in the hell could they possibly have been thinking, especially when Embracer manages to flip just the IP for twice what they paid Square like 8 months later

      Anonymous

      >So Square knows they have another game in the series on the way, and they choose to sell the IP
because even as moronic as square are, they know the game is going to be trash because crystal dynamics is a crap studio that has failed repeatedly with TR, so they washed their hands of it.
embracer did really well to fleece Amazon though.

They should follow the old Tomb Raider comics as a framework. Make Lara strong and charismatic with just a bit of sexuality. An actual heroic female character with sharp wit who uses her brains to get out of tricky situations. People would eat it up as there is currently a lack of strong female characters that aren't dealing with trauma or depression.
Maybe show her getting fit in the gym and that could inspire more real girls to do the same.
