I remember renting this and not knowing what the frick to do and dropping it.
Was I just dumb kid or is this one of those "where the frick do I go" kind of games?

I'm filtered by it as an adult. 2D quest-based games don't really work. I don't find the game all that interesting. It's definitely unique and I appreciate what it is.

You gotta figure out where the evil pigs are hiding near the end (and the game gives you plenty of hints), but the beginning is pretty straightforward so I'd say you were just dumb

      Anonymous

It was an early "open world" game that wasn't exactly linear. You had to explore (2d levels with some occasional 3d branches) and find people to give you certain quests to do. Progress was also gated by certain items and upgrades. It was easy to get lost in, especially as a kid

Not to mention, there are multiple ways to permanently frick yourself on certain quests. What are the chances this """port""" fixes those issues?

This. Never owned a ps1 as a kid and this game always looked like a great time. After buying it on the psp in my 20's, I was confused and dropped it quick.
I thought I was gettinga fun platformer 🙁

I played Tomba on the PS2 Magazine Disc Demos back in the day. I can say if you like platformers and quests it's your kind of game. The presentation is very charming and it's kind of like a silly Klonoa. If you do not like Quests & platformers, then steer clear.

      >Was I just dumb kid or is this one of those "where the frick do I go" kind of games?
It's a quest based metroidvania with lots of secrets and fun interactions everywhere.
You explore the world, you find NPCs, they tell you to do X, you go there and do it, sometimes you find items and upgrades that let you reach different areas, sometimes you get them from quests, all around you just explore a cool varied world with lots of gimmicks and help folks while slowly developing story arcs involving the npcs and finding cool shit hidden everywhere.

      Anonymous

Several segments of the game are just
      >Go find the hidden shit
And if you aren't committed to it, it's easy to get bored and give up.

      >Was I just dumb kid or is this one of those "where the frick do I go" kind of games?
No its definitely a fetch quest: The game. It has weird pacing too, you've completed half the game before you beat the first proper boss. And you'll learn to hate this screen in particular despite the pretty big boob mermaid.

        Anonymous

        >boss
yeah I remember playing it as a kid, getting deep into the game knowing that eventually you had to fight these evil pigs but because I hadn't actually fought a boss yet it was kind of in my head not that type of game and I figured it would go down some other way.
only to then actually get to a boss fight and it was like wtf is this game.

it made a lot of really weird design decisions, but a lot that I really like, it had a lot of jank that was common for the era though and I would love a more modern version of this type of game.

This. Doesn't LRG just make the games run over a emulation compatibility layer? Lmao. Would've been neat if it was an actual compiled port.

      Anonymous

God, imagine being able to get an affordable physical copy of this game for the first time in decades, only for it to jump up within a year and you can't resist the urge to resell it for a profit while still remembering you can play it for free on a hacked PS3, Vita, PSTV, or PC...

Still might cop the physical if it's reasonable. If nothing else, you'll make money off of it soon while you get to flex. Also having it on a Switch cartridge could be funny since it plays kind of like a SNES game.

        Anonymous

if LRG got their hands on it, it's going to be expensive
especially for a game like tomba, it's going to be sold out in 0.01 seconds and then you'll have to buy it from some homosexual reseller for even more money

          Anonymous

LMAO and since it's apparently not even a proper port, what I assumed the bare-minimum was, it's just an emulator.

Ah well, it is what it is. I've never bought a LRG product physically, but I've definitely hear horror stories. Apparently they're also sometimes late AF in shipping shit out.

On eBay I have 100% positive feedback because I always ship my shit out in half the edtimated time I offer. LRG need to learn from individual eBay sellers FFS.

and now they're going to frick up digital games with their israeliteery too?
granted, you shouldn't buy any old game on steam, just emulate it at that point, it's not like the original devs will get your money

              Anonymous

For real. I'm not even sure if buying this would support a Tomba 3 getting made, you'd think the sales of the PS3 releases would have done that.

          >We’ve been made aware that some of our customers have experienced issues when trying to play our release of D: The Collector’s Edition on original 3DO hardware. Firstly, we would like to apologize unreservedly to all who have purchased the game and experienced an issue. At Limited Run Games, the quality of our products is paramount to us, we care deeply about our loyal community, and it is clear on this occasion we have fallen short of the high standards we set for ourselves.

          >Manufacturing games for hardware that is 30+ years old presents a variety of challenges. We partner with one of the biggest disc replication providers in North America to press our physical discs and despite researching original 3DO hardware and software extensively, we found quality and reliability issues when attempting to press 3DO discs in the traditional manner. In an attempt to offer full compatibility with original hardware, our disc replication partner was able to successfully manufacture the discs using a CD-R format, which we believed would work across all commercially available 3DO systems. This process was professionally done and was used to ensure maximum compatibility rather than serve as a cost-cutting exercise.

          >We tested the discs on the 3DO consoles in our office and all five discs from the game worked as expected. It was only upon shipping to our customers that we came to realise that some users were experiencing difficulty. We will not be selling or shipping further copies of this game, or any future 3DO titles until the situation has been resolved.

          >We are currently working with new partners to find a solution for traditionally pressed discs and will offer replacement discs to all customers. We will keep customers updated as this progresses, but in the meantime, any customer who desires can request a full refund.

The reality is they tried to save pennies by using CD-R duplication, because it's cheaper for smaller runs than pressed CDs.

this isn't even going to go into how he basically created the original Tomba situation by craving attention and asking to be on the couch with people he didn't know for a game he didn't know, then kept trying to crack awful jokes because he was live on stream
or how he invited a well-known super autistic speedrunner to watch his stream, then he cheated to try and impress the other speedrunner only for the other guy to notice and accuse Chibi publicly of cheating, which was then confirmed

The only way to get lives to retry in the same screen was to get a higher score, so those were quite limited, otherwise you'd have to save and load from checkpoints. I only played NTSC version and one thing that was odd to me is that the barrel’s parh is mathematically “chaotic” or in other words it doesn’t follow a pattern with cycles. So I took a massive dump as a kid but didn’t bother pausing, I left it running as is, and when I came back the barrel noises were gone. I reloaded and listened and it was true, just staying in that zone and doing nothing will eventually cause the barrel to break itself.

It's in the first game. The event starts only when the barrel falls into the water. But it can be broken.
You can finish the game without even triggering the event, especially if the barrel breaks. It doesn't respawn. And to make it worse, it's at the very beginning of the game.

I first played this on a PS1 Demo Disc, PlayStation Interactive Sampler Vol. 7. And beat it when I got the full game on the PSN store. Its a pretty good game honestly, never played the sequel

  42. 2 weeks ago

I loved both of these games but the missables were some bullshit
Also there was a section in 1 that nearly filtered me and it's kind of dumb that it has a limited lives system along with save points. It seems in the sequel they couldn't figure out how to fix this so they made it much easier.
My biggest problem with this remaster is that it's completely pointless and everyone could just emulate this easily on any device and get the same experience.

I really liked the game until you had to get the pig purses (?); the problem was that each area had a purse and a boss door/gate that you needed to use a purse on, but the purse you'd get in that area wouldn't be for the boos in the same area, which added so much backtracking. I still don't get why they did that.
