TOTK

Has there ever been another AAA game that's an expanded/altered version of a previous game but marketed a fully fledged sequel? Sure, there's asset re-usage and rehashes, but this is literally the same base game.

they did, they added whole areas, changed the elite 4 and champion, different villain, you go through the world in a different way, changed which pokemon you find, changed the gyms, etc..

even that they added like 6 new cities and a bunch of other shit like that tournament thing where you can fight characters from other regions

They reworked the entire world in TotK.

          It didn't feel that different.
          >Inb4 "b-but they TECHNICALLY did this and that"
I don't care. From a gameplay perspective it was not different enough, especially when they charged $70 for it

the underground is an impressive thing but it's mostly empty and best experienced in small chunks, the sky islands are very cool but recycled a lot, and the main map is 95% the same with some rubble strewn throughout it and caves added for flavor

no idea why people think they can get away with calling totk a "new map" or "rework" when the actually significant changes are from how you interact with the map (gliding from above very easily or using vehicles)

          Anonymous

They added exact one new town.
No civilizations in the sky or depths.
          No new races (in-game).
Most of the enemies/mini-bosses are from BotW.
Most of the sky islands feel the same.
Most of the abyss feels the same, and most of the enemies are from BotW but glowing red.
Most of the materials/ingredients are from BotW.
No new weapon types, all weapon animations copypasted from BotW.
          Gliding is identical to BotW.
          Climbing is identical to BotW.
          Parrying is identical to BotW.
Flurry rush is identical to BotW.
Durability is identical to BotW (you can fuse shit on a weapon to extend the durability a bit, but the underlying system is the same).
Armor formula is the same as BotW.
All of the armor you can find in the Depths is just BotW amiibo.
Most sound effects are from BotW.
Most of the UI is the same as or very similar to BotW.
No new weather, same rain as BotW.
Same four dungeon main quest structure.
Same collectible flashback cutscenes main quest structure.
          etc

            >All of the armor you can find in the Depths is just BotW amiibo.
um ackshually there is new armor such as the mining set

heh, looks like your entire post got disassembled and invalidated

i would actually seriously argue that the point you made about four dungeons is wrong, there are functionally five

It's frustrating to me, because I actually really enjoyed ToTK (MonicaAnon here) on playing it, dunno if anybody remembers me streaming it prior to release. But the biggest thing that made my interest dissipate afterwards was what the other anon said about how barely anything from BotW is acknowledged in it. Playing Rebirth felt nice how characters literally talk about what happened in Part 1, and they're not stupid vague about it.
I know the amount of effort that was done with all the areas changed, all the npc dialog/movements, basically the scripting of events. It's actually insane how much was done, but I get how it doesn't feel new.
But because the expectation from the devs is they have to do something on the scale of BotW, their option was to literally use it as a base for the expansion.
Feels so weird, thinking back to when I was a kid, and it was constant new Zeldas. But then after Skyward Sword, it crawled to a halt. The last new 2D one was fricking A Link Between Worlds, which funningly enough is like the proto-ToTK to ALTTP.
I wonder if the Linkle mod is coming to TotK, that would motivate me to play it, but considering it took years for them to release a fricked up 3.0 one that needed an unofficial fix for the arms, I doubt it'll ever happen.
I'm just gonna play more Three Hopes, it's my current guilty pleasure.

No. It's a really well made asset flip, but the map is completely different.

        Anonymous

It IS a different region. Different overworld, town, dungeons, everything. It's just that the character models and some items are almost all the same, but apart from Link and a handful of others, they're treated as different characters from another universe.

I don't know if it's AAA, but Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy is a prequel for the original Dissidia that also contains all the same levels, story mode and content of the original game. Better is that your character progress in the original can be carried over to 012.

Taking the same overworld as the last game and using it as the basis for a solid portion of the current game's overworld has been done before. There's usually some sort of extenuating circumstance, though.
The famous cases of yore (where an entire previous game is basically present in a new one) tended to be bonus content in some capacity.
A more recent comp would be ALBW, using the same overworld as a loose skeleton but changing the details (particularly the dungeons/quests), but that was done decades after the original, so it's not the same thing as a direct continuation.
So no, there's nothing that's to its predecessor exactly as TOTK is to BOTW.

Most answers ITT are just meme answers but FF10-2 is a real answer. Same exact locations copypasted from 10 with a few new ones added, just like TotK. 13-2 and 13-3 had brand new locations, so no excuse for this just because it's a sequel.

Also how some characters remember you for doing a specific side quest but other characters from that same side quest have never met you before

I still don't understand why they didn't set the game in the past, 10,000 years ago. Would have been a great chance to change the map a bit more.
