How has Forspoken made the company lose so much money? After production I mean. I would get it if Forspoken cost $600million to produce and only earned $10million in profits, but is the game continually somehow losing them money? Service fees? Promotion? Licensing costs?
I'm guessing the marketing costs is what really sunk them. I'm more curious why Avengers is catching a stray, that flopped years ago and is completely forgotten about so why drag its corpse back out?

Yeah people are underestimating how big of a flop flopspoken really is. I cannot figure out who they thought this was supposed to appeal to but it's so terribly conceived on every level. Are you shooting for the black demographic? They won't play RPGs led by women, are you shooting for the black female demographic that plays video games? I can't imagine that's a large audience, are you shooting for the nonexistent woke demographic that buys video games? That isn't a real thing. It's baffling. All of those problems before you even get to the game's quality or it's terrible storytelling. WHO WAS THIS FOR.
Game was basically written by a woman whose only previous work has been mediocre tv shows and a man whose career path was failed comedian turned to failed actor tunred to comic book writer. Amy Hennig was also involved, but seem to have distanced herself by claiming her only participation was writing the setting's background lore and that she never touched any of the characters or the dialogue.
I would lay the blame on the producer, Akio Ofuji. The dude previously worked as a publicist in the '00s and as the marketing producer for FFXV. I think the dude swallowed too many blue pills by working in the marketing industry, and somehow bought the narrative from his western colleagues that moron shit and girl bosses is all the rage
pretty much entirely sony's fault. these are high budget games and sqenix are desperate for their next big hit but sony suits have managed to convince them that putting these games exclusivity on ps5 (or some other exclusivity/marketing deal) is best for their company.
They are on a contract and the contract says they must give it at least one major DLC and obviously this will come with more advertisement expenses, "modern gaming" is such a unsustainable meme it's insane.
I think the problem is the timing of it all. If Squenix wasn't already in dire straits they could have written off FF16 as an underperformance at worst and just move on, but the game was supposed to be a smash hit that would fucking save them.
So the question is, what now? What can they do anymore? Is it up to FF7R now?
FF7R will guaranteed sell less that what the first game sold, and the first game didn't sell very well. It is literally over. I feel Sakaguchi gets overrated somewhat especially nowadays. Not trying to take away from the guy since he did make a few games that I liked. But from what I understand he wasn't involved or barely gave any input on FF since 5 or 6. For 7 I heard he gave some early concepts and very extremely vague concept that they didn't really use and that's about it as he was most likely preparing/working on his movie. I believe I saw a while back, someone mentioning that even Uematsu stated Sakaguchi was barely involved, but I'm not sure about that. For FF8, he had no input as he was doing the movie. He came back for FF9, but had none or extremely little input on FF10 as development for those two games were done at the same time and he was leading the FF9 project and the others were doing FF10. His only involvement with 11 was saying it should be an mmo(they were still in dire straights due to the movie and i believe ff11 did badly in the beginning for several years and it takes alot of money to run and maintain a mmo so you can guess how much money was siphoned). For FF12, he was gone by that point and only suggested Matsuno be appointed as Director, which Matsuno unfortunately got sick and left. But Sakaguchi had literally no input on FF12 as he was long gone with his own studio by that point. Getting special thanks is nice, but there are times when that's not for "helping on a project" and just for courtesy.
Also artistically hollow is subjective. I mean I have seen people call FF12 "bland and brown" or shallow with no story or a fetch quest story. Same with FF9 being called generic or cartoonish. But yeah people aint gonna put "my opinion" all the time. Not a surprise, considering I see people love to talk about how they "know what happens or how they develop in scenes" only for them to say extremely incorrect things where the cutscene or dialogue literally disproves their "fact", which shows me when someone is not paying attention.
So yeah I'm calling bs on 13 being the first game that Sakaguchi had no input on, and I feel this is probably some hater who probably likes FF12 and wants it to be special by being "touched" by Sakaguchi, even though Sakaguchi stated that he will never play FF12 because Matsuno never finished it. I say this because he literally put the "no input" statement after 12(when we know he already left and the only thing he did was for Matsuno but he had no actual input in the contents of the game), when at the earliest Sakaguchi was not involved with 8. But he arguably wasn't that involved with as earlier with 7 or even 6.
To be clear, I do like 12 nowadays(turbo really helped amongst other things), but I've been getting very weirded out by ff12 fanboys. I'm not sure why, but it always feels like FF12 fans that love to insult other games in the series or call themselves the "only mature and deep one." I like it, but that game has plenty of flaws like the story pretty much stopping and becoming extremely, let's say, iffy after Raithwall with many political and other moments becoming sparse or just not developed. Or the combat is extremely easy/basic, there is a problem when simple heal/esuna/revive and attack gambits are you need to basically not have to do anything for the main game and from my experience most of the hunts. Or how the license board felt more like getting the next equipment for many of the jobs since the tecknics sucked. Doesn't help I've met some guys that want to claim ff12 is for the "those who appreciate maturity" and tried to claim FF12 was always seen as the "golden age" when FF12 was always divided back in the day and while the Zodiac Age has helped it, is still seen as controversial in several circles.

And for FF12, we know he already left to make his own studios YEARS AGO and I highly doubt that he would have the time to do any input on another studio while he is working with his small studio. Also keep in mind he did talk with some of the FF13 guys but he kept things very brief as I assume he was still stingy about what went down after his movie. And again he stated he wouldn't play FF12 since Matsuno left so he most likely doesn't know how FF12 is or its development making it highly unlikely he did any actual input which if you add that in with him working in his own studio, it is very highly likely that he had no actual input in FF12. The only thing he did was for Matsuno but he had no actual input in the contents of FF12. But he arguably wasn't that involved with as earlier with 7 or even 6 but I rather not stand on that cause it's not like I was there at the time, but the other comments are what we know or can at the very least make an educated guess since we know the timeline and several comments that came out of it.

Adding this in case you meant in terms of themes for artistically hollow, well that is also subjective. This isn't my opinion but for things like FF12 i've seen people say they felt the theme was either rushed or lacks backing which probably is due to the story just being kinda bare or lacks development after Raithwall, or some other people say the theme and setting is generic in 12(fight back against empire is what I heard but it is of course not the only theme; well my wording makes it more like a setting but you get the picture). Or FF9 getting too pretentious or forced in some ways(too long to discuss so i rather not get into this) or only really works with a few characters since many tend to fade into the background. I guess I will add that many FF games tend to have more than 1 theme. Like I would say 13 had family and overcoming griefs/hardships as other themes they utilized.

I have come around on XII nowadays, but it is nice to see someone mentioning how divided XII was. I feel there is some revisionist history going on, because back in the day XII was really hated. I won't go through the one liners that used to be said about it, but I remember seeing people use those one liners for other games nowadays, but it was definitely very hated back then. I think it's still divided based on what I see in some places while other places tend to extremely overrate it(in my opinion). Perhaps its because people played the Zodiac Age or only have experience with the Zodiac Age with all its QOL and changes. That doesn't change how the story and characters just becomes extremely bare after Raithwaill amongst other things but it helps.

I remember actually seeing vitriol with every FF game since 7, it's actually interesting to stumble upon some old people's comments on them hating FF7 because they felt everything was linear or feel if things were corridorlike in places, and probably other things too that bothered them. Internet wasn't as big back then, though considering this is ganker, not all my opinions match with them so....yeah. Off topic, but it is nice to see some criticism or hate for the Trails series. I have a hate love relationship with Trails(so I like it for the most part), but it's nice to see some people mention what I dislike about it here or I guess the usual one liners, memes, and occasional long post. There is a certain story criticism I have for Trails, but I have only seen one person post about it sadly. A bit of a thinker, but I feel the FF7 worship is kinda like a self fulfilling prophecy. Like it will have high sales nowadays because people keep telling other people that they have to play it and i'm sure the fans would buy remasters again and again. And if you dislike it, then you can't really say it online, at least when I see it, it gets alot of pushback amongst other things. While it might be because of other factors, you would expect FF7R to have much higher sales for the first game at the very least, but its just fine. I don't know, while I think FF7 is liked I think it's not as popular or globally popular as people think. But perhaps that's just because jrpgs are niche in general. But again I don't know, just something I've been thinking about as people always recommend it and just comments I see of some people at least being "meh" about it or will say the neutral thing of "i'm sure I can see why some people like it back in the day especially if it's their first game". Personally, I honestly don't really like FF7 but I'll leave it at that.

I would lay the blame on the producer, Akio Ofuji. The dude previously worked as a publicist in the '00s and as the marketing producer for FFXV. pretty much entirely sony's fault. these are high budget games and sqenix are desperate for their next big hit but sony suits have managed to convince them that putting these games exclusivity on ps5 (or some other exclusivity/marketing deal) is best for their company.
They are on a contract and the contract says they must give it at least one major DLC and obviously this will come with more advertisement expenses, "modern gaming" is such a unsustainable meme it's insane.
I think the problem is the timing of it all. If Squenix wasn't already in dire straits they could have written off FF16 as an underperformance at worst and just move on, but the game was supposed to be a smash hit that would fucking save them.

I feel Sakaguchi gets overrated somewhat especially nowadays. Not trying to take away from the guy since he did make a few games that I liked. But from what I understand he wasn't involved or barely gave any input on FF since 5 or 6. For 7 I heard he gave some early concepts and very extremely vague concept that they didn't really use and that's about it as he was most likely preparing/working on his movie. I believe I saw a while back, someone mentioning that even Uematsu stated Sakaguchi was barely involved, but I'm not sure about that. For FF8, he had no input as he was doing the movie. He came back for FF9, but had none or extremely little input on FF10 as development for those two games were done at the same time and he was leading the FF9 project and the others were doing FF10. His only involvement with 11 was saying it should be an mmo(they were still in dire straights due to the movie and i believe ff11 did badly in the beginning for several years and it takes alot of money to run and maintain a mmo so you can guess how much money was siphoned). For FF12, he was gone by that point and only suggested Matsuno be appointed as Director, which Matsuno unfortunately got sick and left. But Sakaguchi had literally no input on FF12 as he was long gone with his own studio by that point. Getting special thanks is nice, but there are times when that's not for "helping on a project" and just for courtesy.
Also artistically hollow is subjective. I mean I have seen people call FF12 "bland and brown" or shallow with no story or a fetch quest story. Same with FF9 being called generic or cartoonish. But yeah people aint gonna put "my opinion" all the time. Not a surprise, considering I see people love to talk about how they "know what happens or how they develop in scenes" only for them to say extremely incorrect things where the cutscene or dialogue literally disproves their "fact", which shows me when someone is not paying attention.
So yeah I'm calling bs on 13 being the first game that Sakaguchi had no input on, and I feel this is probably some hater who probably likes FF12 and wants it to be special by being "touched" by Sakaguchi, even though Sakaguchi stated that he will never play FF12 because Matsuno never finished it. I say this because he literally put the "no input" statement after 12(when we know he already left and the only thing he did was for Matsuno but he had no actual input in the contents of the game), when at the earliest Sakaguchi was not involved with 8. But he arguably wasn't that involved with as earlier with 7 or even 6.
To be clear, I do like 12 nowadays(turbo really helped amongst other things), but I've been getting very weirded out by ff12 fanboys. I'm not sure why, but it always feels like FF12 fans that love to insult other games in the series or call themselves the "only mature and deep one." I like it, but that game has plenty of flaws like the story pretty much stopping and becoming extremely, let's say, iffy after Raithwall with many political and other moments becoming sparse or just not developed. Or the combat is extremely easy/basic, there is a problem when simple heal/esuna/revive and attack gambits are you need to basically not have to do anything for the main game and from my experience most of the hunts. Or how the license board felt more like getting the next equipment for many of the jobs since the tecknics sucked. Doesn't help I've met some guys that want to claim ff12 is for the "those who appreciate maturity" and tried to claim FF12 was always seen as the "golden age" when FF12 was always divided back in the day and while the Zodiac Age has helped it, is still seen as controversial in several circles.

Adding this in case you meant in terms of themes for artistically hollow, well that is also subjective. This isn't my opinion but for things like FF12 i've seen people say they felt the theme was either rushed or lacks backing which probably is due to the story just being kinda bare or lacks development after Raithwall, or some other people say the theme and setting is generic in 12(fight back against empire is what I heard but it is of course not the only theme; well my wording makes it more like a setting but you get the picture). Or FF9 getting too pretentious or forced in some ways(too long to discuss so i rather not get into this) or only really works with a few characters since many tend to fade into the background. I guess I will add that many FF games tend to have more than 1 theme. Like I would say 13 had family and overcoming griefs/hardships as other themes they utilized.

I have come around on XII nowadays, but it is nice to see someone mentioning how divided XII was. I feel there is some revisionist history going on, because back in the day XII was really hated. I won't go through the one liners that used to be said about it, but I remember seeing people use those one liners for other games nowadays, but it was definitely very hated back then. I think it's still divided based on what I see in some places while other places tend to extremely overrate it(in my opinion). Perhaps its because people played the Zodiac Age or only have experience with the Zodiac Age with all its QOL and changes. I never messed with that mechanic much. I can see it being fun, but I never heard of it being very useful to have a team of monsters than people.
I've got 3 regular characters, but I gave my mediator Monster Skill for a laugh. Some of the monster skills I've seen so far have been surprisingly good. The only problem is I never get to use her AND a monster outside of random battles because Ramza's always wasting a slot.
