Also best waifu and Frederica for best ending of the three when Roland and Benedict's ending suck. Anyone who thinks Benedict's is good clearly didn't catch the stuff where true ending spells it out that devs are saying through Benedict as a mouthpiece his route is bad.

They didn't give a reason though. Literally everything they say is bad about Benedict's ending would apply to golden as well, or be even WORSE, they just don't show it.

No Benedict literally spells it out for you when he's about to leave Serenoa in in the true ending until he's persuaded to stay. The seeing Norzelia in flames vision talk is implied for his which especially makes sense because how the hell is a ending where the two big bads being Idore and Gustodolph are still alive is a good ending. Serenoa becoming king (more like puppet king just like the prior one) is just cycle repeating itself for another war on the horizon and a worse one at that given how the weak/poor are in it because of Benedict's agenda. At the very least his ending has the best potential for a sequel if we ever do get one.

Benedict's ending is based though. Rebellion is just the natural cycle of things

You say that but Serenoa is a puppet king just like his predecessor just that Benedict is "thinking" what he's doing is right for Serenoa when it isn't for Norzelia as a whole. And if you think I'm wrong Gustodolph points it out with his caged bird talk regarding Serenoa if anything surprising the guy is much more based like what Frederica does in her path as Gustodolph doubted she would follow in her mother's footsteps.

Golden Ending is just Benedict's Ending but all the characters have moronic amounts of plot armor.

Frederica's character development sort of just "switches on" when she learns her mom was Salt israelite Moses, but the other two swapping their convictions is really convincingly written. Benedict always had a huge soft spot for Wolffort's lands and was uncharacteristically un-pragmatic towards it. Roland's self-deprecating attitude blooms into him passing the buck at the first opportunity to more experienced rulers. I have to give the writers credit for sticking to their guns with Roland. He's shitty leader material from the start of the game and he never miraculously grows into it, being a shitty ruler right through to the end of the game. I was so certain they'd bunt with him and have him figure out statesmanship off-screen once you take the capital back.

Serenoa is the weak link in the story, he has frick all going on. His "lack of convictions" ironic flaw isn't very interesting and he's so measured in his response to everything. I've played through 3 times and I still don't give a shit about him. Gustadolph's c**tiness should've been toned down a little. Making every slimy character untrustworthy looking is also a b***h move. Other than that, it's a pretty well written game.

Stabbing Benedict in the back by taking Frederica's route is way more kino even though Benedict's route is better for the continent. Benedict might turn Serenoa into a puppet ruler accidentally, but Serenoa was guaranteed to be that in any route where he lives since he has no conviction of his own.

Thinking of picking this up. Is it more like FFT/TO or is it more like Fire Emblem?

      FFT.

Thanks, I just wanted to be sure. That was the impression I got, but I saw a few reviews that compared it to FE and I couldn't figure out why. I guess that's most Switch owners' point of reference for SRPGs.

It's really nothing like Fire Emblem at all so you're most likely right that Three Houses is their only exposure to the genre.

I guess I could go through a few game mechanics.

          >There's no permadeath even on the highest difficulty. If a unit dies, they only disappear from the current map. However, unlike FFT where you have a certain number of turns to revive the unit, in TS it's more binary and mid battle revival methods are incredibly scarce.

          >There is a class change system but it's rather bare bones with each character basically having two upgrades that just makes them objectively better. Characters more or less stay in their initial "roles" that they had when you recruited them.

          >Every character has their own skill tree that's a bit more robust but it's pretty easy to max out most of your A team anyway. But to be fair, it's pretty easy to do that in Tactics too.

          >There are set story characters you will always get, but some characters are locked behind stat gates or route exclusive choices and will join the army once the flag has been triggered. It's impossible to get all the characters in one playthrough but you can get most of them and they're all set individuals unlike Tactics where you can recruit randoms

          >Positioning is the name of the game here. You get a high ground damage bonus, a back attack damage bonus and if you attack an enemy with an ally on the other side, they get to perform a free follow up attack. The enemies can also do the same to you though

          >There is an elemental terrain system at play. For instance, you can create a puddle of water and freeze it with ice to make difficult terrain. Or you can lure all the enemies on to it and electrocute it with lightning for big damage. It's actually surprisingly useful and made me feel like I was playing a WRPG at points.

I probably don't need to tell you about the whole morality system selling point.

True, but the real question is would that still be the case if LiveALive was a brand-new release instead of a remaster?

    I don't know I think they're both great

Really enjoyed the game, are there any older games from 90s,00s, like this? That isn't fire emblem or FFT? I've played them both already.

I would give Der Langrisser a try. There is a remake but im not amazingly fond of it. I really love the soundtrack of the SNES version, the translation while probably partially inaccurate is hilariously based

There are a few routes, and personally I like the story and characters enough. The gameplay is admittedly a bit flat. Interesting and fun ideas to play with, but overall it is a pretty damn easy game if you are used to the genre, but I still loved it enough to beat it twice in a row and go in for half of another route.

I dunno if it is worse, I just dont really like it aesthetically at all, and the gameplay systems feel a bit worse

The game has too many flaws where optional characters are concerned. Maxwell not having any interaction with Roland was downright criminal.

    Best character coming through

Last I checked he's a simp for lady Destra and he tries to act as though Serenoa was one for Frederica when he chose her path but it was from his own conviction especially given Wolffort's dogma in defending the oppressed so he lived and even died like a boss up to his father's words.

        >Last I checked he's a simp for lady Destra
Benedict secretly hating Serenoa and Roland's dads makes his actions way more interesting. It makes you wonder how much of the vicarious ambition through Serenoa/callousness towards Roland was actually just misplaced rage. I'm pretty sure his attitude to Roland is mostly spite, given that he never, ever tries to give Roland advice directly, even though he's allegedly loyal to the crown.

Serenoa never inherited his dad's gigantism and Serenoa looks so much like Benedict when he was young. I wonder if Lady Destra was getting fricked by Benedict, too. There isn't any supporting evidence beyond that, but I've always wondered.

The game also should have had a route where you stayed loyal to Aesfrost. Nobody in your damn group is even opposed to that except Roland, and when you try to do that route, you get "conquered" by Hyzante and are forced to defect even if you previously bent the knee to Aesfrost.

the biggest problem it has are not enough route diversions. I get it since it is kinda hard to make a game like that but it does make a few of the earlier decisions feel meaningless. The ones that play into the golden route are nice at least

Honestly this might have one of the worst cast of villains in any SRPG. Up there with shit like Fates.

Exharme was incredibly disappointing for how much he was built up. Lyla is a Camus except even more poorly written. Idore is the most generic religious bad guy possible. Thalas and Erika only exist to kick puppies. Only Gustadolph has any actual depth and even he only gets a satisfying resolution in two of the four routes.
