turn based combat, levelling, endgame customization to put some characters on supportive roles, it's more of a Jrpg, tho; so not a REAL rpg like baldur's gate 3 or even diablo
>turn based combat, levelling, endgame customization to put some characters on supportive roles
Those are staple mechanics of an RPG, but if you aren't able to customize your own avatar and play your own role on the game's world (chose your name, profession, skills) then is not a roleplaying game. It's an adventure game with turn based combat and level mechanics.
Joke or not, that's a really common answer when this topic is brought up. And my counter is that, by that logic Super Mario 64 is an RPG too.
So by the logic then Final Fantasy IV isn't an RPG?
Exactly, if you take as a margin Final Fantasy I through VI, you will see that the saga strays further and further away from the "RPG" concept because as I said, it maintains the turn-based combats and the experience mechanics, but you start playing with "chess pieces" that already have defined professions and their own backgrounds within the plot rather than having the opportunity to project yourself into the world and play your own role.
it's a jrpg. jrpg just means you level up and used turn-based combat (and was made but the japanese). it's not like a wrpg where you have to actually have role-playing elements
Great point. The original Dragon Quest was an actual RPG but since then, when a japanese says "RPG" it means "it's a turn based combat game" rather than "it's a roleplaying game. So in any case, as cheesy as it may sound Super Mario RPG is a "Dragon Quest-like" game, not an RPG.
It was a meta critic parody towards the by that time current JRPGs genre. It made fun of a lot of tropes like; the silent protagonist, exposition in text, too much text, pop culture references, while still managing to be a charming and fun experience. Also the musical score is still top notch and the turn based mechanics is solid.
I mean, it wasn't. Both of these games were boring shit for kids, I would rate Pokemon above both of them because at least it had a few new ideas. Well, new for a Nintendo product, it was just a kid's version of Linda Cubed.

I never ever wanted to kick someone's ass irl before as much as now. You have the absolute worst opinion I've seen in this site for a while now. Good job

Sorry you're a homosexual. DQ5 is 10x better than Earthbound and SMRPG put together.
It's not really. Japan got wizardry before actual D&D and never really understood what an RPG is. You're seeing the ramifications of this decades later.

Is every turn based combat game an RPG?
yeah, sure, why not?
I would not count Chess or Advance Wars as RPGs. At least you would need character progressions system.

An rpg is a game that identifies as an rpg
You're going to try and be funny about semantics, right? You always have me in stitches with that shit.
You role play as mario
If I'm role playing as Mario then why can't I fuck Gaz's mom
Mario wouldn't do that

Super Mario 64 isn't an RPG, it's a 64 game. Says so right in the title.
No it'sa JRPG as you play the role of Mario in that Japanese game. Sekiro is a JRPG as you play the role of Wolf in that Japanese game.

The real reason is basically that back then "RPG" was understood to be just that. Turn based combat.
>inb4 b-but muh Dungeons and Dra-
Yeah no ones cared about those greasy nerds.
Better question: what makes this game good?

So it was Earthbound?
yes? Earthbound was also a good game?
I mean, it wasn't. Both of these games were boring shit for kids, I would rate Pokemon above both of them because at least it had a few new ideas. Well, new for a Nintendo product, it was just a kid's version of Linda Cubed.

Its turn based and has niggas in a row, so I bought the game at $60 USD. Simple as
Riveting PedoPhile Game

You're playing the role as Mario.
You can choose to jump the goomba or not, it's a thinking man's RPG
Damn game crashes at the cutscene where peach joins the party EVERY TIME, da fuck is going on?
The same thing that makes zelda, final fantasy, diablo and skyrim... a rpg.
You talk to people.
Better RPG than whatever your favorite homoerotic visual novel with no gameplay you call a CRPG is
It's right in the title you fucking mong.
