I don't think this is wrong if everybody is having fun. Though I'd ask the GM for a challenge or I'd bounce out of boredom.

This is coming from a GURPS-bro because the umbrella is too large. We determine what we are doing in the most specific way possible so that there are no problems with that. For example, I'm currently playing on a Dungeon Fantasy campaign, which is high fantasy cinematic with psy squids and walking suits of armor with a tint of survivalism here and there.

But the GM has anounced that our next one will be a gritty noir investigation game with no supernatural and realistic power levels.

That's just a "that guy" problem. A stern talk and have him shut his trap or kick him. We tried the former with our last moron and then the latter. That being said, I'm the rule autist of the game and I just use it to help the GM by DMing him rule tables whenever something comes up. The guy we kicked was the "wrong" kind of rule sperg, where he was convinced everything written in the GURPS books were wrong because he didn't like them. At one point I sat him down and did a Google search on GURPS's writers for the things he was complaining about to show that he was really out of depth. For example, in one of his complaints, he said the bows stats were wrong. Now there's a Pyramid article that specifies how bow-making works in real life, written by an engineer, and how things such as material, age and technique used affect the data. The beauty of playing GURPS is that the no one is spergier than the devs. Fair notice, there are also fairly detailed material on locks.

It doesn't mean they aren't stupid, since the same article gives different statistics for bows (and especially crossbows) than the ones in low-tech or basic.

Furthermore, and I'll add to this, it doesn't matter if he's a materials engineer, because he's converting kinetic energy to "damage points", and as someone in the medical field, I can tell you no such thing exists.

In his ballistics article, he credits Dr. Martin Fackler's article on terminal ballistics, which directly contradicts his math as Fackler dispels the myth of kinetic energy dump to tissue damage by secondary cavity.

This is why GURPS gun damage is so abs-fricking-disastrously high as to be unplayable. Gun damage is based on penetration of millimeters of rolled homogenous armor at no deflection at the muzzle, with damage falloff at half projectile velocity range (well beyond the optimal range of firearms, so all damage even at open field infantry ranges are full damage.)

Not to mention treating people as 400 brinell steel plates for injury definition purposes. It's laughable, and it's the result of a materials engineer being so fricking autistic he can't make a working damage system.

So on that topic, you *are* correct. They're autistic to a detriment.

And if you'll indulge my own autism just for an example of how disastrously out of touch damage values for guns are, just put this together.

I cannot stand those guys who have to flaunt their knowledge and insist on hard factual details to the GM. I don't mean for their own thing--if a pike autist wants to lavishly detail his own pike, that's fine. I mean that guy who will interject with random ass information about whatever is going on and starting arguments with other people who aren't trying to be detailed or perfectly reflective of reality. Especially when that guy's understanding is often COMPLETELY FRICKING WRONG and most likely something he read off Reddit and took as gospel. The absolute worst was the time he tried to correct the GM on how magic worked, in a setting made by someone else that he had no deep understanding of whatsoever yet postured himself as an expert anyway.

There's a lot of the kind people who are eager to prove how intelligent they are. They do not like thinking though so they rely on other people's conclusions to do the thinking for them. They do not care about knowledge or study but the status gained from it, so they steal from others instead.

      This.
The wrong way to have fun is fricking up the game for other people on purpose.
Ultimately, I don't care what you do at the table so long as it works with what everyone else is doing.

That said, what truly gets me is rules lawyering, getting mad when the GM makes a ruling they make clear is intended to be revisited because you're turning it from a disagreement into an argument, agreeing to drop it until the end of the session, muttering about it every turn but not quite arguing, and then disappearing at the end of the session and never showing up between sessions to sort it out then bringing it up again mid-session - not even in messages or texts or emails or anything. Back up your point of view with screenshots from the rulebook I know you have, you motherfricker.
It turns the minor disagreement into a needlessly protracted multiweek argument. Even if you were right I'd rather you just leave after two sessions of this. I can forgive one, sometimes people just have a bad day, but you had a week to discuss it inbetween.
Plenty of people will happily discuss a rule with you between sessions and maybe even change a previous ruling that was made primarily to keep the game moving but if you agree to drop something you can either drop it or frick off to here and b***h about your GM being That Guy to the court of public buttholery.

It's makes no sense in terms of RP nor is it some actual attempt at roleplaying. These people rely entirely on the notion that other players won't turn on them and that the GM won't do anything.

Serious games. They don't work in real life. The only serious game I've ever had was via online text.

No they don't work. You're playing a game in your offtime. You have access to food and drink. That alone causes games to dip into silliness and merryment. Add to it that NONE of you are actors, NONE of you are actually these characters, and there is always a sense of separation between yourself and the character (and their abilities) and you will necessarily step into clowniness. I've never seen a real life serious game not peter out into silliness, it just doesn't fricking work and you need to realize that it doesn't. Frick even RPG videogames can barely manage to keep a serious tone and all the best ones are pretty fricking whacky.

The only time I've seen good serious play is through online text games since you can think about and consider what your character would ACTUALLY do and the GM has plenty of time to think about all the actions and words of his various npcs as well. Even then, it tends to get silly at some point.

Not to mention you typically are playing with friends and you're getting together for your once a week game, you want to have fun and talk about real life here and there during the game too. It's just that serious games don't work in that atmosphere.

I hate to say this but it sounds like you just play with shit people. I managed to get one serious game off in Mutant year zero.

Yeah, I play with my friends. I suppose you might be able to create these tones with strangers who you only interact with to game, but I'm not going to spend 4-6 hours a week of my offtime on strangers.

If you're friends with them, you will not maintain anything serious. It's just not going to happen. You're around your friends and will naturally joke and be jovial.

The right way to have fun is to do something you enjoy and recognize others enjoy things differently without have a stick up your ass. I think spergs have this assumption that they have the most logical mind, so when they have fun with something one way but not another, they immediately conclude their way is correct and will make up some bullshit why the other is wrong.

I agree your scenario isn't good, but because for me it wouldn't be fun. You can tell when the GM is trying to keep characters from dying.

This is gonna be a cliched answer from me, but imo a relevant one nonetheless:
The only wrong way to have fun is making others not have fun in the process.

When the "fun" doesn't involve the game (like roleplaying in a game whose rules don't support it), and when the "fun" interrupts the game (like meta bullshit that sidelines everyone and wastes precious time).
Both of these things were how I coped with playing D&D. The game was so bad.

  13. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

What irritates me is when "fun" is used as an excuse for every game to be the same rules lite, zany kitchen sink with no book keeping or seriousness. It's no skin off my back if you want to play that game with others, but if I establish from the outset that I'm interested in running a fairly dark campaign, or at least something with consistent rules and atmosphere, and you're just regurgitating stoner comedy and complaining that the system doesn't work like D&D 5e, please leave. I don't like romance. I don't like systems where the race and equipment list has covers every genre. I like a little bit of comic relief but not too much. But I feel like desperate players will just latch onto your campaign because they can't find a spot anywhere else, and then whine that it's not a generic fantasy experience they could have at any other table. Bonus if you're a hang-on who never reads the rules so I have to explain everything to you mid game.

    It just gets me down.

Teehee Maccaroni is the bane of my fricking existence.

Every fricking campaign that my GM runs inevitably at some point involves running into an NPC named "Teehee Maccaroni," who the GM affectionately describes as "an epic level sorcerer who's also a moronic nudist gnome."

Teehee Maccaroni wander the countryside with a unique Rod of Wonders powered by "moron magic" shoved up his anus, and he casts the Rod of Wonders by diddling his penis. He says nothing but his own name in different inflections and the phrase "I like-a the goodberry, gimme gimme the goodberry." The GM thinks it's hilarious to have this character show up during the middle of encounters we're struggling at and start jerking off magic everywhere.

    But the worst part is his chant. He wanders around chanting his name, so when he's about to show up the GM will start low;
    >Tee-hee-hee, Maccaroni Maccaroni
    >Tee-hee-hee, Maccaroni Maccaroni
And then get louder and louder until he's fricking shouting
    >TEE HEE HEE, MACCARONI MACCARONI!
    >TEE HEE HEE, MACCARONI MACCARONI!

And the table loves it! The other guys I play with think this is the best shit! Teehee Maccaroni has been our table's de-facto inside joke, our signature "running gag" for six years now. When that chant starts up, everyone else joins in like a ritual; the whole table is expected to start chanting "TEE HEE HEE, MACCARONI MACCARONI" by the end, and every fricking time I refuse because this is some embarrassing circa-2002 Penguin of Doom shit, it's always the same thing; "There goes Anon again! No fun allowed around Anon! Anon's just a big grouch who's getting angry because we're making him touch Teehee Maccaroni's penis again! Why won't you just let us have fun with this character, he's just here for dumb fun, you stick-in-the mud!"

These motherfrickers are all over 25 years old.

Teehee Maccaroni is going to be the death of me.
