Unironically what happened? This shit was fucking huge for about a year and then after around mid-2017 or so it dropped off wildly.

the popularity was artificial and died off when money could no longer prop it up
People were already getting annoyed by the drip-feed rate of new content and retarded balance changes to appease shitters on Reddit and the Blizzard forums, but then they started jumping ship en masse to PUBG around the time of the game's first anniversary event. Then what playerbase they had left gradually started moving on after they started fucking with the game balance more and more thanks to ActiBlizz pivoting towards going after exportsbux.
Blizzard prioritized E-sports, I don't mean they prioritized balance over fun because even when it was relatively balanced they still made retarded changes just so they could artificially create new meta for each season.
This. They don't balance the game properly, they just make popular characters redundant a GOATS situation doesn't ruin OWL again.
How did Riot get away with it while Blizzard flopped?
because blizzard wasted all their shekels on a fake esport scene and everything in the game was designed to be fun to watch instead of fun to play.
blizzard's overly control-y nature made things worse, on top of their balance logic of rotating the meta instead of fixing problems
they tried to go woke and support China at the same time
No actual content updates, It tries too hard appeals to MLG pro gamers which turns away the main buyers of video games the causals.
Esports gayry killed Overwatch because, shocker, turning your game rock paper scissors with extra steps where characters hard counter each other to the point of completely shutting them down entirely, isn't very fun.
the game went to shit when balancing was done to cater to sweaty competitive fags and esports players. casual players had favorite characters that would be nerfed into the ground because sweaty gays exploited them in some "poopshit meta" or something.
all that was on top of the company trying to push wokeshit in their game's lore while simultaneously molesting their employees
>the game went to shit when balancing was done to cater to sweaty competitive fags and esports players. casual players had favorite characters that would be nerfed into the ground because sweaty gays exploited them in some "poopshit meta" or something.
Unironically why I dropped LoL.
When they did the Poppy remake, she became my main and I loves playing her on top... only to be nerfed because people were playing her as Support on championships.
Bad management of the game's meta. Instead of balancing weak characters to create a flat set of comps that included the entire roster in one way or another, they allowed themselves to become metaslaves and the game got boring. New characters were introduced too often and either made it into the current meta or weren't played. CC spam sucked from the beginning and nipping the problem in the bud immediately instead of waiting for it to spread was idiotic. The promise of PvE was never delivered on even seasonal events proved it was possible if they just put some fucking dev time into it.
Making 5-10 minute PVE events that we need to wait a year for isn't worth it. It's better to commit to a full system for a long term PVE thing instead of these mini games. The cinematics are nice and all but it was clear by 2018 that it wasn't going to hold players otherwise. Hopefully they can add something that has some fucking substance but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Everything else is a skill issue. They'll complain about every meta and balance change regardless how balanced it is or not. The reality is that the average gamer sucks at video games and don't have the patience to put time or commitment for getting better. Think of every other shooter out there. It needs to have some chore for them to do or non-pvp content to keep players engaged. It's the same with fighting games, rts games, mobas etc. anything relatively competitive. It just needs to have a constant flow of content outside of the normal game. They were too slow to go about it and now they're struggling to get up on their feet with these staggered releases and "early access" crap.
Anyone else who thinks some controversial thing like selling to China or having gay shit or monetization is the reason is kidding to themselves. Look how many people jumped onto Diablo despite the 2 years of complaining about monetization and all the other controversies the company has been through.
Well, a one time payment and getting extra stuff free for years is a solid deal for a P2P game. Most games don't update for free unless it comes with a DLC that requires payment. Used to be paid expansions. F2P with paid content is bordering a scam depending how much is locked behind payment or grind. I can't wait to see how outraged players will get when they see the cost for PVE.
Literally every post above me is right
Base game should have focused on experimentation but had mechanics that prevented experimentation (ULT meter reset on character swap). More kookie methods = fun and memotable. Meta = boring same ass match every game. Also no 12v12 or 16v16 and modding community.
too casual for sweaty tryhards
too sweaty tryhard for casuals
Same problem as Pokemon GO and MapleStory 2: New updates just don't come fast enough as the demand... demands. And when they finally do, it leaves a sense of "huh, I wish this had come the previous patch, before I got burned out".
In OW's case, they tried too hard to make a game into a strict role meta that just didn't have enough characters (And new ones rarely came). We should've seen this from the start when they removed the ability to have more of one of the same character in a team.
I remember how everybody was insanely excited for Sombra with all the ARG hints and breadcrumbs left, now heroes drop and there's basically no celebration or leadup at all. Not even Kiriko had much despite being advertised front and center as the big new character
>people were excited for countdown to another countdown "ARG"
Not how I remember it
Jeff Kaplan happened. Basically forced a content drought because he's incompetent and refused to work on the game.
The game is actually in a better state now gameplay wise than it ever was in OW1 since he's gone and the devs have had more community outreach in 5 months than 5 years of OW1.
Games as a Service is Scam.
this character ruined everything.
D.va's CC didn't take full control away from the player
and? There's much worse CC in OW1 and that's not the reason why Brigitte was strong. Mei's stun was stronger, shatter is stronger, flashbang is stronger, hook is stronger, sleep dart is stronger. The reason why the meta went to shit was refusing to nerf problem tanks. Retards blame things like goats on Brig but it was still being played after Brig got nerfed and only fell out of favor after Dva got nerfed.
It's hype was entirely based on it being "TF2 but fresh" and when the absolute stink that was Blizzard's design and balance decisions set in it just drove off everyone that cared about the game outside of SFM porn.
>This shit was fucking huge
Overwatch turned into a joke but you're out of your mind if you think it wasn't really popular in 2016-17.
Why is competitive mode such a mess? It's never an equal or close fight, it's always a stomp.
they fucked the matchmaking and hid the actual ranks to speed up queue times. it's a poorly designed mess, even the streamers stopped playing competitive
>even the streamers stopped playing competitive
You mean flats stopped playing when he couldn't get carried
That's what it seems like.
[spoilers]My gf is barely masters and keeps getting put in Top 500 lobbies. She's starting to hate the game.
>didn't bring actual content fast enough (or at all)
>pandering to LGBTQZ123HIV++++
>pandering to China
>annoying nanny moderation. Can't even say "ggez" in a fucking shooter game
>they're so desperate for people to pay attention to them they'd be willing to do this
>literal who website writes speculative misleading headline
Do you enjoy being a bot?
They fucked up ranked.
There's a whole tons of people who have mentioned this repeatedly. Only after season 2 did they address some issues..but it's been mentioned that it will take much longer to fix the rest of it because they designed the whole thing around 7 wins to change ranks.
And then they found out.
Most higher ranked players don't play enough matches to get to the proper rank they are supposed to be in. So they degrade before they even finish.
Even with 5 wins it's still fucked. You have gold's in GM matches.
They fucked up matchmaking in general, it's not just a ranked issue. Even in casual 99.99% of games are a completely one-sided stomp and neither side is even remotely fun to be on.
I've been trying comp for the last week and I'm baffled at the balance. I'm just guessing the comp playerbase is so small, that they can't afford to balance them well anymore.
I'm by no means a pro OW player, but the matches I fight in are always one-sided.
>be in comp lobby
>other team are averaging 35 kills
>i'm the only person in my team with double digit kills, and that was only 11 kills
>the DPS in my team kept dying to turrets
Low MMR is just like that. My rank decayed down a lot since I didn't play for a long time until OW2 came out and I would demolish any low MMR lobby no matter what I was playing which would also result in my team having better stats since you only need to do 1 damage to get counted for an elimination participation.
>You have gold's in GM matches.
I've never actually seen proof of this happening in competitive.
My experienced this regularly when she climbed. She would be gold, but have masters/GMs in her lobbies. When she hit masters, she had Top 500 as well.
"my dad works at nintendo" isn't proof
then you haven't opened your eyes
They're open, waiting
Some people think there are mismatched ranks just on titles but don't realize you can get it in any other mode or unlock them as they climb throughout the seasons
It's funny seeing someone with "masters competitor" title in unranked because they're always like barely plat and terrible at the game because they cheesed it in open queue or lucioball or whatever where there's a much smaller population.
Not enough content fast enough
Shit tier meta for raw fun, lots of players got bored since supports and tanks (what people didn't want to play) were just fucking overtuned compared to dps
Too much resources went into the esports scene that was seldom watched organically
the game dropped after they made Soldier 76 gay
Skinner box with bad balance, bad maps, bad physic, bad characters, no modding, no community servers, no community maps.
It's pure liquid diarrhea for brainless consumers. Playing this game is slightly better than working at a factory because you can stop playing when you want at least.
Game turned into a Moba fps, and they arent paying streamers enough money to shill it for them
>Game turned into a Moba fps
That doesn't make any sense, are you saying it's more of a moba now? Because if anything it's the exact opposite
The game was genuinely fun at launch but Blizzard made retarded decision after retarded decision and it simply was not nearly as fun anymore.
>Roadhog's two-hit combo
>D. Va being an unkillable monster with instakill ulti
>Symmetra's car wash
>MCCREEs flashbang stun and cool-as-shit one shot ultimate
>Soldier being straight
>Widowmaker actually being useful
>Junkrat damage... all of it.
>Mei's freeze/headshot combo
>Mercy's full team revive
>Tracer being straight, her booty pose and more guarantied ultimate
>Genji being an unkillable, instakilling snake when played at max potential
>Pharah's rocket displacement that allowed for more guranteed rocket chains
>interesting new characters
>minimal CC with shooter-first design philosophy.
>iconic character designs... I mean seriously every OW2 design is such a fucking downgrade from the clean look of OG Overwatch.
It's funny because removing CC has made too many characters unkillable.
Can you believe they made a game with hypermobility, but only for some characters, and then removed counters to hypermobility? Doesn't that seem like bad game design?
It'd be different if everyone had some mobility option, you could just use your mobility to counter others, but the game isn't like that.
>Can you believe they made a game with hypermobility, but only for some characters, and then removed counters to hypermobility? Doesn't that seem like bad game design?
I play OW with people that have been playing for years and no matter how many times I say this, they don't understand.
They used to call me stupid for saying CC is balanced and needed for this game. I don't think many people in the OW community actually understand game balance, or play many other games tbh.
Almost all of these are completely untrue also what's up with wanting minimal CC which they did for OW2 then lamenting about the loss of CC at the same time? It makes you sound like a child.
Money, blitz marketing to brazilians and children. Valorant is a strictly worse version of CS and one of the ugliest slowest games ever made but is popular simply because of money injections marketing it to people who don't know any better.
Valorant's popular because it is the exact kind of game a lot of people wanted - a CS:GO with more variety and character and an Overwatch with more restraint and shooter-first focus.
It's the only game that intentionally puts brand new players on your team to punish you for winning to force a 50/50 win rate causing almost every game to be a complete stomp whether you win or lose
How do you explain the thousands of unranked to GM videos?
Not that anon, but I would argue many of those players are cracked and easily carry.
If you're an average player, you're literately fucked. Yesterday I was completely stomping, or being stomped.
If you're average then it's not "forced 50" you're just playing with other average players so of course you'd win about half your games.
I feel like being in average games would make it equal. I'm however, getting in lobbies where my team is dying all the time, getting no kills, while the enemies have 30-40 kills.
there's quite a few that get dumped because they lose a game at the beginning or get stuck in diamond.
Rank is just plain fucked. That's why it's dead. Also for some fucking reason they keep making tracer porn where they give her a big butt and she does workouts it's fucking disgusting and boring.
>literally died before the game it was supossed to kill
they removed the fun. stuff like 5 stacking a single hero. they were so desperately focused on making a 'competitive' game that they took out everything that made it a fun game.
No limits is still in arcade though? The only people who play it are unironic soulless koreans though.
i mean maybe it wouldve worked if it actually made the game better for competition but it didnt do that either
all they did was make it worse for everybody, every single patch was a bad patch
porn is still pretty strong tho. thats all that matters really
Blizzard didn't add enough to keep the game alive. They focused more on skins/lootbox which burned out the playerbase. Made several buffs and nerfs that were controversial and added limited custom games late in lifespan. Overwatch 2 was a cash grab and a downgrade from Overwatch 1 and delayed the features people were excited for. Overwatch only remains in people minds due to the porn.
They killed ranked.
In OW1 if I was having a bad game as a DPS. I asked to switch to tank or healer. Now. I'm stuck the whole game. So it just absolutely fucks the ranks.
huh? open queue exists
It's not the main mode.
So? You can get games in even ranked open queue at 3AM in under 90 seconds. It's not as popular because it's a goofier more RNG mode. You don't even need to go searching for it, it's right next to role queue.
segmenting game modes is basically the devs way of saying "you aren't playing our real game because we cant balance that"
even riot games figured out that much.
A lot of people like having alternate modes. They're all pretty populated except for some of the arcade modes nobody likes such as no limits. I like jumping in open queue and one tricking reaper to meme on the people trying to sneak wins by stacking tanks.
theres nothing wrong with alternate modes, but if you take something away from people and put it behind an alternate mode, it's understandable they would be unhappy that what they enjoyed about the game is now an after thought.
i think its the healers and also partially the tanks. look at it this way: they fucked it up so bad, they made a role so undesirable that it created the healsluts phenomenon. nobody wants to do it unless they are bullied into it, and that ended up getting popular with sexually submissive freaks making it weird. imagine fucking up game design that bad.
compare healing in overwatch to the common comparison, tf2. one has 12v12 as the common way to play it, and sometimes you can win without even having a medic because there are still healthpacks, engineers, and alternate healing loadouts like bb or mad milk. or if you have one medic, that could be a huge factor and an uber at the right time could decide the game, despite being only 1 player out of 12 on a team. in ow, you originally have 6 players, and 1 third of them are healers, which tend to be even more boring than medic because you dont even have things like random crits, many are just healbots with massively reduced damage that will die about 95% of the time against any other class played competently, making it FUCKING BORING. nobody likes an fps designed that way ever. and they made it worse in 5v5
in casual tf2, a medic isnt needed, but is massively appreciated when they are there. in ow, 2 medics are required to be playing great at all times, and if one is afking in spawn, you might as well do it too because the game is over. this makes everybody fucking miserable and hate the people that do play this boring but necessary class
Battle royales were slowly growing, then Fortnite decided it was what its dead on arrival zombie game needed and became the first big F2P BR widely available on PC and consoles, and then people remembered that it was fun to play a shooter where you could fucking shoot things instead of being in a war with your teammates over picking tank/healing or playing the actually fun game(and god help you you better pick the actually viable characters).
Then COD stopped fucking around with future shit and reminded everyone why it's been the best selling game of the year every year since the 7th gen started, minus when Rockstar bothers to release a game.
Then later the hero shooter concept was revisited with R6S, Apex and later Valorant, both of which place way more value on fundamental FPS ability rather than the numbers game, and surprise, people actually fucking play them.
And you're not penalized for liking a character in these games because your ability to shoot other gays is more important than managing cooldowns and blasting away at shields, so your favorite skin you unlocked for a COD operator is always usable, not rotting away because they're not meta.
Why go back to Overwatch?
And the whole multimedia promise fell flat quickly, with Blizzard's usual nonsense and its lead writer uncommitted to doing anything besides asspain about the fanbase more interested in shipping Mercy with Pharah rather than his self-insert.
League, Valorant, Apex were all more than happy to move into that space. Look at how many different LoL spinoffs have been put into play, from soft alternate brand stuff like their kpop or magical girl costumes to the RPG to the vaunted Arcane. Valorant and Apex crank out cinematics and other stuff at a rate that makes Blizzard's dev speed seem even more glacial.
Overwatch had no meaningful competition in its first year. Every year since its launch, a new shooter stakes a place in the market.
Again, why even bother with Overwatch?
One thing people don't seem to mention very often is that they fucked up the merchandising end of things pretty badly. In that first year when the game was really big, you could get maybe a t-shirt or some stationary. They waited until the game was on a serious decline until they brought out toys, tie-in comics, plushies etc etc. Stuff that would've flown off the shelves had it been released a year prior filled up junk bins and discount sections because no one cared by that point.
>Unironically what happened?
It's a shit game from start to finish.
I checked out 2,it was alright. Kept getting my ass kicked, but got somewhat better
because they kept making the game worse with the newer power creeping heroes, changes to old heroes that sucked, and changing how you queue and play the game entirely from launch til they shut it down/transformed it into OW2
pretty much mishandled by Blizzard and trying to chase the esports money
>Try and emulate the three role MMO system into a shooter.
>But as it turns out Tanks and healers can kill people too, some even better than dps.
>Game becomes tank and heal the game
>Barriers also make the game more of a slog
>Oh fuck we killed over one third the playable cast, lets force them to play DPS.
>Devs continue to fuck with things so much it fractures the fanbase, people get tired and new skins don't really get people back.
>Games not dead but the hype is gone, players who are going to play have done so, new people are going to shiny new games.
>Devs release OW2, which promises more robust PVE campaign and a bunch of new shit.
>PVE comeing "SOON"tm, PVP cuts a tank and some maps and characters.
>Also BTW we put new characters behind a grind fest battlepass now with dailies and missions
>The battlepass is mostly nothing burgers sans a few skins, no one gives a crap about voice lines and sprays.
>ALSO we jacked up the prices on a bunch of shit you can earn the coins to get it at a drip feed.
Go home, gamer """girl"""
looking pretty cute there best girl
Which overwatch girl would you breed.
>make her lesbian
Hmmm I wonder why.
Bro nobody cares there's been a lesbian in every COD since MW19 and that's fucking Call of Duty, Valkyrie is eating Loba's ass every night in Apex and Valorant just had its own lesbian kiss publicity stunt a few months ago.
None of those games are struggling. If the game is still playable and it isn't a full on Sony pride parade float, sane people will not mind gay characters.
Or even warp it, going off how many really run around with the free LGBT emblems/banners in Warzone just for the sake of Hispanicing up those killcams.
tracer was a dyke before all that happened
iirc the comic got banned in some shithole i think china or russia and Ganker was spammed with butthurt for weeks
doesn't help the official comic artist had a tumblr art style with chud vibes though, these gays on here jerk off to yuri after all
