Valheim

Great game that gained huge amounts of hype out of nowhere, but all that potential squandered by slow af updates.
Biggest disapointement of 2021 without a doubt.

I don't know why people say the "exploration" in this game is great when its the same repeating 5 biomes (Ocean doesn't count. Is literally empty) with the same enemies and resources. Prepare hard to sail across the world and you find yourself in the same land There is no variation. The best parts of the game are building and the aesthetics. It looks nice and is very comfy.

Exploration is great when players don't know anything about the world yet, the lack of updates is what killed the momentum.

Autists love repeating the same thing over and over again. Why do you think these "craft-explore-survive" games popular in the first place?

    >the retarded shill is still trying

Here's the hall of failures for your game :
    - Fake advertisement
    - Deleted 80% of the roadmap after getting funds
    - Used the money to buy a pony instead of hiring more staff
    - Performance reported to be garbage because devs can't properly do chunks
    - Food backward balance
    - Devs can't take criticism and immediately lock any bad community post about them on Steam
    - More than 1 year after the game still is going nowhere

Even by early access standard failure they managed to perform worse.

Probably abandonware at this point. The devs never expected to get this popular and successful and probably experienced internal struggles and creative differences between each other due to the money they now have and the possibilities that opened up to them. I'm certain that one of them wants to do a big overhaul, the other wants to continue their original plan, and one more just wants to quit while they're ahead.

On a completely different note, Valheim is basically a Norse third person Terraria. That's the best way to describe it. Just like Terraria the whole game is built upon following a progression path. That's the entire game. Make gear, find boss, kills boss, unlock boss reward item required to reach next boss, repeat. Breaking the progression order is designed to be basically impossible. If you go to the mountain before you've defeated the previous bosses on the progression path will lead to you getting mauled by the wolves who are designed to be fought with gear that you can only obtain from beating all previous bosses.
I think not a lot of people were expecting the game to be like this. They were hoping for something more along the lines of minecraft where you can explore freely without zones being gated off by the progression path.

To me the most entertaining part of Valheim was actually the base building. It's actually got some depth in it, like roofs and upper floors requiring proper support and smoke from fireplaces needing to leave the house through some kind of chimney if you don't want to suffocate. But it's clearly not a finished system yet. There aren't enough things to build or ways to decorate your house. The game could also really do with some kind of invasion where a horde of creatures attack your house, rewarding players for building a proper defensible fortress.

      Anonymous

There are horde attacks the problem is if you built a proper moat nothing is getting near your base. Just as well, nobody would play if their base was routinely demolished.

No you moron. You're just being intentionally confusing for being "technically" correct. But the vast majority of cases when someone says "third person" when talking about a video game they're talking about something like Silent hill, Gears of war, and Resident evil. Not something like the 2D Mario's or Terraria. Pretending otherwise is just being a pedantic cock.

While your last sentence shows you probably haven't played the game for more than a few hours, you're otherwise correct.

What really gave me the absolute shits though was the "Hearth and Home" update, supposedly meant to add a whole bunch of building items and be focused around the base building (as the title implies) barely added anything at all, and on top of that, nerfed all the food into the ground (when everyone who played the fucking game said most things needed to be BUFFED)

That "major content update" was proof that they do not give a shit about the game

I enjoyed the game even when it was down to 2k players because I started to play at late local times, like between midnight and 6am. you usually had one active official server with the sweats and one half empty fuck around official server with people just building catapult trampolines, lutebotting, dueling, emote spamming and map exploring/exploiting until someones escalated and it became a 10vs10 again.
speaking of which, my biggest problem was that the server felt way too crowded. 12vs12 mode like in tf2 would have helped this game a lot.

Install valheim+ and skip the grind by adjusting values like carry weight, smelter times and gather rates.
Install the massive endgame content pack, adjust the magic item crafting so it isn't an endless grind, install classes mod for fun to use magic.
Install raft mod for custom ships, install ship speed mod for motorboating like a viking.
Play the game again and enjoy. Finish it again, realize that the devs will never develop even a fraction of content that the modders added, uninstall and never touch it again.

I then reached the swamp, endured it to the best of my ability, crafted an Iron tool, and then logged off and never touched the game again.
Realizing that I had to do even more grinding just turned my brain off. No thanks.

Great game, just too grindy for me. Maybe I'll hop back onto my save & continue, who knows.

Tbf, teleporting wasn't an issue for me, as I'd just build small FOBs, like

        >he doesn't build forward bases
don't tell me you kept sailing all the way back like some kind of super retard

said, and would continue making progress. My main issue was that I eventually got bored of the mining + smelting grind. It just felt so extremely tedious.

I believe the main problem is that dungeons are way too short, especially the crypts. you barely get any iron scraps out of them if you don't mod drop rates.
crypts should be endless, catacomb-like labyrinths with multiple entry and exit points all across the map.

That sounds awesome. Spend less time running/sailing around looking for crypts, and spend more time actually engaging in more of the fun stuff.
If they made crypts more profitable, and made mining/smelting less tedious, I probably would have finished the game.

Just thinking about bashing a copper node 50 times, dumping the ore into a cart so I wasn't permanently over-encumbered, dragging the cart back home, and accounting for weapon durability, all while being attacked by trolls, greydwarfs, and skeletons, just does not sound like a good time to me.

Maybe I'm just too casual of a gamer to appreciate the grind.

It's very clear that the devs have decided to milk this for as long as they possibly can, a glance at the Mistlands update and so far it looks (at a glance) like the Meadows but with Mist rather than the spooky, scary, skeleton, forest it originally was. Anyone that's mildly critical, or questions their shadiness instantly gets banned and their thread locked. They gave us the base game in the same amount of time we have what we do now which should tell everyone what's going on. I imagine it will eventually be finished but only with very meagre updates.

it will be minecraft all over again
first they will patch fun stuff away (like minecraft's various world generation options or flooding mechanic), then they will add shit nobody needs or asked for (random animals and netherworld), then they will declare it to be finished and let its corpse rot in the sun.

Playing Valheim with my friends was one of the best gaming experiences I've had in a long time and it has become one of only two games in the open world survival crafting bullshit genre that I don't intensely hate, the other being Terraria. I don't know if the devs are just retarded or if the massive financial success they've had had eliminated any incentive to work on the game since they're already rich. I hope they pick up the pace soon, but probably not.

I've always found it kind of odd how people's expectations of Early Access games gets so out of control. You don't really see this with released products because there's this idea in the back of most people's mind that "oh this game is done, so that's what we get I guess". Sure you have people that will be disappointed in a fully released game with issues. But with EA games, it's taken to such a wild degree.

People form these images of "what the game is going to be" that they form insanely unrealistic expectations. They buy something like Valheim and start to talk about what the game should implement and then get confused when that either never happens or things completely different get implemented.

I won't ever understand it. I've bought a shit ton of early access games and I always see this happen. A thing I've learned is if the status of the CURRENT product at time of release is not something you would be satisfied with it, then you shouldn't buy it at all. People buy these games on a ethereal "what if" type idea that the game WILL 100% live up to their expectations. It's just kind of wild.

These bros get it. Never buy an EA game you're not happy with where it is at the time of buying. I have several games in EA that were straight abandoned during their dev cycle but the game that resulted was still really fuckin' good even though the whole pipeline never came to be. If Valheim went 1.0 today, it'd be annoying since they never finished their pipeline but I'd still have a good game I've put 100+ hours into. I've seen this games like Gnomoria, Heat Signature, Necropolis. Shit, the guy who made Black Day cancelled dev on that project and then gave everyone who owned it his reboot project, Black One, for free. If you give DoubleFine money for some shitty indie title with zero features and they abandon it in two months, that's on you. Make sure any game you buy has the features you actually want first.

The devs created most of what already in the game in less than 2 years. It's been almost two years since early access with very little updates so most people are wondering if the game is abandoned or not, the assumption seems to be they made their money so they don't care anymore.

Considering the slow updates it probably took at least 6 years before the EA release for the game to get to this barebones state. They weren't planning to update frequently even with the original roadmap.

I legitimately think it's a John Romero thing. The majority of the game was made by the lead dev alone in a few years. Since becoming a full studio, he probably has to spend so much time running the business that he has very little time to dev and the others just can't do what he does. It's the Ion Storm/Daikatana story.

My biggest fear is that the Mistlands update will release and it will be nothing like the base game. The base game is simplistic, quick, and fun. The Mistlands will probably be complex and take forever to get through. If the development time is an indicator of content length, the Mistlands will be just as long as the entire base game

Fuck off. I did not enjoy this game at all.

      >Making travelling annoying because you can't teleport ore
As much as people bitched about this, it was one of my favorite aspects about it. Too many games are too quick to immediately invalidate actually TRAVELING in the world with multiple fast travel options. I'm so sick of everyone just sitting in a hub and TPing everywhere. Actually having to run around is fun.

Then they shouldn't had teleports in the first place if travelling is big part of the whole game.

For an indie game, it was pretty big on Twitch for a little bit. But yeah, it didn't last very long at all.

I downloaded mods that fix all that and the game became fun.

I hope that they eventually deliver the 3 biomes they claim to implement for the complete game. I didn't expect the additional 2, maybe another playthrough in a few years if they do. It was a fun game to explore blindly with friends.

I bought this game and played it for 80 hours before getting to the end of content and I enjoyed it. I wish it had more content and that the pace of development was faster, but I already got my money's worth.

Gentle reminder of Ganker 1st rule:

Rule 1: Remember the human. Ganker is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Ganker free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be in trouble.

Other games don't have this problem. Maybe the issue is with Valheim?

Maybe they should work on the game instead of pulling a Yanderedev?

Have you visited the steam forums very often?
Think of the most retarded shit you see posted here on a regular basis. Now multiply that by 10 and have it come from mostly Brazilians.

Every steam thread should be locked by default honestly.

I still play it here and there but only modded. Valheim+ adds too much QoL and lets me autistically build real towns and shit without the extremely oppressive stability shit, and other retarded barriers to pad out the length of gameplay like not being able to teleport ores/bars.
