inb4 someone comes around saying Valve profits from those bots, they don't. Most of those bots make profit off independent websites where none of the money ends up with Valve.

they make money indirectly from them since those items get sold off anyway

Making a new steam account is piss easy. It can be and is automated for those botters. This also affects Valve's bigger IPs like CS2 (and CSGO before that) and has a much bigger impact there, so if it were that easy they would've done it long ago.

couldnt you only allow trading once an account has spent at least 100 bucks on videogames or something like that? You can just nuke them once in a while.

The items sold by bots mostly don't go through the Steam market but private sites instead through trading, so most of it doesn't end up in Valve's pocket.

You'd have to be moronic to run a bot and use steams community market

You guys think this is easy to fix? Jill (former TF2 dev)has multiple times stated that he has on occasion manually banned thousands of bot accounts at once, the third worlders just make more, the process is just incredibly time consuming and doesn't yield much results, the truth is bots have won the grind game and Valve just kind of gave up on trying to deal with it.

TF2 was in fact a paid game before 2011, and even though there wasn't a massive bot crisis you still had plenty of cheaters to wade through. The real difference was that back then the online was driven by vanilla servers hosted by both Valve and the community, but ever since Valve changed the main menu to put all emphasis on the matchmaking buttons there's been less and less reason for people to host their own servers for TF2. The ones that still have one up these days are either made for bots, made for little kids, or uncletopia.
Tyler McBlack person played a big role in the bot crisis, his actions have single-handedly given the bot and cheat market a massive boost because they now hold the source code to the game and can build their exploits in ways that cannot fundamentally be removed without changing TF2's programming foundation entirely.

Exactly what he said in his post: got his hands on the TF2 source code and just put it out on public internet for free. Some people say it was out of spite against Valve because they obviously don't tell him any insider info, but the reality is that Tyler is just another drama youtuber that will do anything to secure views and clicks to his channel and live off of the ad revenue. He simply chose to focus his channel purely on Valve related news.

The leaked code is somewhere between Meet Your Match and Jungle Inferno, so essentially it's only two major updates behind given that Valve fricked off in 2018.

                Anonymous

The SDK is just for the engine itself, it doesn't give you anything specific to any of the Source games. This is why the leak was so destructive, TF2 is one of the oldest Source games and Valve has re-used a lot of its code in other games, especially CSGO.

As an autistic soldier main, my issue is genuinely how little effort it takes to shutdown everything I do. It's the same problem I have with pyros. As little skill as my favorite class takes, it still takes effort. Pyro and Short Circuit take even less effort than what I do, for a far better reward. It sucks so much shit to unload 300 damage into the enemy team only for a pyro to just casually walk up, hit a single button, and just frick your day.
I guess on dustbowl it's not so bad, but I always get stuck with a heavy that thinks he's the only one keeping them out, and not realizing he needs to help our demo deal with the bullshit.

Honestly most of my problems with this game can be traced back to a heavy or a pyro making my life miserable. 99% of the time, that heavy or pyro is on... MY FRICKING TEAM! I could honestly go on for hours about how horrible pyros on your team are and how everyone who plays pyro should genuinely uninstall the game forever.

And you know what? If you’re not shit, you can fend off explosive classes because you have a fricking shotgun and default speed. That’s way more than what Scout and Pyro get to fight Engineer.

The items sold by bots mostly don't go through the Steam market but private sites instead through trading, so most of it doesn't end up in Valve's pocket.

      >Doesn't Valve make bank off of idle bots thougheverbeit?
The actual bots that are farming by the thousands don't go through Steam Marketplace, they trade through third party websites and payment processors so Valve doesn't actually see any of that money. Scrap metal and craft hats are a form of cryptocurrency at this point.

      >And don't these bots have zero impact on the game for normal players?
If this were true then there wouldn't have been years of people complaining about bots. Sniper bots were such a huge plague that Valve actually did implement fixes to have them autobanned, which didn't help much because bot makers switched to Heavy bots that are loaded with the exact same aiming hacks but aren't as obvious due to the nature of minguns.

What makes you think that there's even more than 1 unpaid intern working on TF2?

after the last TI, the main carry pro player who won the competition swung by the Valve office to have a chat to the devs and hang out.
They apparently freaked the frick out that someone even came by, the receptionist made excuses saying nobody was in and from what he could see only 4 or 5 people were even in the entire office during office hours on a work day.

TF2 makes them at least $10,000,000 a year and Valve are greedy israelites so even if that’s a “drop in the bucket” compared to Steam and CS2 they would still care if that went away. Only reason they haven’t done anything is because people still spend money on the game.

I think with the sniperbots they're genuinely just too lazy to give a frick, but the idlebots they're probably neutral about. They aren't doing any tangible harm to people's ability to play the game, it inflates the game's playercount and probably keeps a few more people playing since they can buy cheap shit from russians.

The market does not affect gameplay. Valve barely cares about TF2 at all, as long as the servers aren't getting DDOS'd 24/7 then they're not going to do anything. The sniperbots have been plaguing this game since fricking Overwatch 1 came out and they won't even do anything about those. Idlebots aren't low on the priority list, they're not on it at all.

no more item drops. no more metal, no more cases.
introduce a "random drop" box that costs a quarter or something to replace it all.
make it so people are guaranteed to get one of each weapon by the time they have 100 hours in the game and get no weapon drops after that.

Turd-worlders making 0.01 USD/week care, and they definitely give a shit (on a designated street of course). Yeah they could kill the economy and fix the game, but it would also crash the economy of counter strike and cause a class action lawsuit from homosexuals who spent 500 dollars on hecking rare knife skins. It would also ruin their microtransaction cash cow by making everyone think they could get rugpulled at any time. Man I always wanted to make a cool shooter. The idea of balancing different classes and map design really enthralls me. Shounic's video on how he iterated the circle map into something actually playable and good was fricking fascinating. It's a shame that making a shooter as an indie is LMAO NEVER EVER tier, from having to deal with hackers, to getting a playerbase AT ALL being impossible, and so on. Also despite its current, dismal state, TF2 kind of peaked the genre and anything you would make would be an inferior clone.

      Anonymous

      Oh god this.

The whole reason the online shooter genre is in such a shit state is how reliant we are on the actual games industry to make anything worth a damn. If this was a single player game some amateur indie would have just made what they wanted themselves and probably being some big indie hit because he actually addressed an unfilled demand.

But since it's multiplayer there's a shit load of complications like needing to run servers for the game and needing a pre-established playerbase because you can get the catch-22 of "no one is playing the game because no one is playing the game".

      Anonymous

I played on the circle map the other day, it wasn't good at all. It was heavily biased towards explosive classes and the lack of flank routes and proper cover made half of the classes useless.

so what if some thirdies profit from 17 year old game.
      >but muh player numbers.
Player numbers don't affect ones enjoyment of a game not until they dip so low you keep seeing the same players constantly, which is not the state tf2 is in.
All that matters is the getting rid of the actual aimbots in the casual servers.

What if Valve fixes TF2 by just getting rid of matchmaking and making everything community server based?

      Anonymous

They have no real reason to cut their main casual servers. It would be better if they went back to the older system where searching for a game automatically showed valve and community servers.

      Anonymous

The community was never as angry as when matchmaking was forced into the game. Reviewbombing and "BRING BACK QP" spam similar to savetf2 protests were blazing for weeks, but it was entirely contained within tf2 circles. Valve is too stubborn to admit they were wrong though.

      Anonymous

People just want quickplay back. There was nothing wrong with valve servers, in fact they provided something that the community servers can't seem to manage which is servers running each of the major game modes 24/7.

  65. 3 weeks ago

If TF2 official servers functioned like community servers, servers visible in the browser, play map; get map vote at the end of the map; play next map, there would be higher player retention and less room for bots to take spots when the server is being repopulated and frick things up
Source is my ass but I'd try it

This is how quickplay and valve servers used to work, yes. You'd play on the same map till the timer ended, unless you landed in a community server (which was optional, you could request valve official servers only)

Ok, but how do these bots actually affect the game despite bloating the playercount? It's interesting that it's happening and sad that Valve is doing nothing about it, but in the end it doesn't affect the game at all and I don't understand why people are chimping out over it.

The matchmaking problem is just a microcosm of what happened when online gaming was taking off in consoles.

The majority of players, when presented with an option to play on or host servers that cater to their preferred environment and rules, vs pressing big shiny button that throws random morons in a standardized match, will always take the latter just because it requires less effort on their part. Even if they'd objectively enjoy the game more, they can't be bothered to do any thinking.

          Anonymous

Then there is also the problem of no one wanting to seed servers because nobody joins because nobody seeds servers because...
Removing matchmaking and funneling the playerbase back into community servers would be ideal, but most would also be fine with the compromise that was old quickplay.

I've been to the Valve office, the TF2 guys don't even work in the main building (btw their main office building is located at the top of a shopping center, it's pretty cool), they have a seperate office from the rest of the company which makes me think they spend all their time fricking around. Also the way Valve development works is that all the employees choose what to do, so if nobody gives a frick about developing TF2 it won't be done.

Isn't it scummy to make money off a game you can't be bothered to maintain though?

        Anonymous

They maintain it, the game works perfectly 17 years later. Every single other multiplayer game from that era (apart from LoL) is literally dead, those developers stopped maintaining their games until one day they shut them down forever. TF2 still works, there are servers, you can make your own servers, the game works on Windows 11, they even added content and events throughout the years.
Don't get me wrong, Valve is a company and like very other company they want to spend the least amount of money to maximize profits, but I just don't see how "VALVE ABANDONED TF2" is a thing when you can still play the game.
One could argue "but the game is unplayable, it's full of bots, that doesn't happen to League of Legends!!!" well... yeah, maybe it's time to realize only maybe 20k people still play TF2... dead game. League doesn't have the same issue cause there are like 150 million players, it's impossible for bots to overrun that.

At least if the game were abandoned valve wouldn't shut down shit like TF Source 2. Instead its stuck in limbo where valve makes just enough money to incentivize them into shutting down fan games but not enough to fix the game. The only solution is to stop buying shit so they are abandon it for good or fix it.
None of this would be a problem if they'd let the community fix the game, but they won't.

now it's been 5+ years since i've last played in 2019 (and it was STILL FUN back then), but i think the playerbase is in the right here.
as long as valve sells cosmetics and makes shitloads of money from the marketplace they should address the issue. it's not like they actively want to kill the game like respawn does with titanfall. they still add new hats each christmas/halloween, just to squeeze more $$$.

and it's not like it's something extremely hard to fix. there is ZERO CHANCE that valve can't kill all bots with a single button. there are loads of solutions, yet they ignore the problem. for what reason?

      Anonymous

      >as long as valve sells cosmetics and makes shitloads of money from the marketplace they should address the issue.
That's the problem. Because the game makes money no matter what, Valve has no incentive to try killing the bots. The only kind of protest that will actually work is for everyone to collectively stop using the markets, as proven by how fast Valve responded to the crate depression.

Black person, there is a huge blowout recently with entire servers being filled with similar types of bots using the server browser, you can actually look this shit up, it's nuts.
But besides that factoid, tf2 idling is less resource heavy since tf2 has a text only mode that can be split multiple VM's.

NTA but there's no way a TF2 bot farm needs as much processing power (and therefore electricity) as a crypto miner. Crypto mining literally sells the processing power in exchange for crypto, while the TF2 bots just need to be "running" the game and connected to a "server" to function.
