lmao, it's fucking dead then. If Valve ate the cost like with Steam Deck and made it $900 max then they would've gotten a lot of sales. Fucking retards.

Even that is high. It was a huge gutpunch to pay $1000 for the index then the next year the quest 2 launches and it's better for $300.

I'd only pay $1000 headset if it was basically top of the line and I knew it would be years and years before zuck could compete with it.

what even were steam machines? As I understand it, they were just literally any premade but with steam os instead of windows.

        Anonymous

Yeah they essentially were small form factor PCs with SteamOS on them, but they never took off at all (especially since Proton wasn't really a thing and Linux-supported games were few and far in-between). Unlike the Deck which has the advantage of being a portable device, Steam Machines were just crappy PCs that couldn't play many games out of the box. At least if this is purely a box for running VR wirelessly, it has an actual benefit (and Proton is a lot farther along now)

It doesn't even matter if it hasn't sold well, it's still a success, valve has never liked windows being the only good main os, the steam deck helped build momentum for linux development and adoption.

Yes, that's pretty much it. Their aim was to make getting in to PC gaming easier. Steam Machines would be rated as Steam Machine Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and so on. As years went on, system sold with newer hardware would be grouped together by similar performance and assigned even higher levels. Then, on a game's system requirements page, it would say "Needs Steam Machine Level 2 or higher," and that's all the user would need to worry about.

I'm gonna be honest... As much as I love Valve and hate exclusivity, buying any headset besides a Meta headset is a waste if you want to play games. Meta is the only company actively funding VR games, and it seems like Valve has completely abandoned VR game development. Even if they make another one you can play it with Quest Link anyway.

      Anonymous

      >Meta is the only company actively funding VR games
Nevermind the fact that Meta is a privacy nightmare, they're also the ones that ruined it by making most VR games they bought and dev'd exclusive to their shitty store.

        Anonymous

Yes, it sucks, but unfortunately they've won, especially with Asgard's Wrath 2 coming out with Quest 2/3 exclusivity. At least you save money on the headset since they make money from the games. Also, it's probably the most organized piracy scene I've ever seen, they just made a program that just downloads any game you want straight from some server they pay for themselves. It's quite impressive. I have no idea how it hasn't been shut down.

This is why I'm waiting to see how the Deckard will turn out.

      Anonymous

I've heard PCVR has a hard time getting developer attention because they have to support so many devices, whereas if you develop for the quest 2 or whatever the target hardware is known.

A valve VR steam machine makes a standardized piece of hardware like the steam deck. It's also accessible to normies. PCVR needs to just werk for morons.

Deckard would be able to play the huge library of flat games, and flat games getting VR mods are slowly growing. Also it will be much better for desktop use.

The only thing that makes me question the survival is the price. To really make sense it has to have a bad bitch display. It won't be cheap.

        Anonymous

Valve will probably be willing to sell it at a loss like PS and Xbox considering they mark everything up 30% on their store (like PS and Xbox).

        >The only thing that makes me question the survival is the price. To really make sense it has to have a bad bitch display. It won't be cheap.
the displays are coming. slowly, but surely. just look at phones now, every single discount phone has a great display now.

          Anonymous

Yeah but what I mean is they need state of the art to make the deckard high enough resolution to compete with just playing on a tv or monitor. Virtual monitors floating in your room are cool but they can't be blurry. You probably need something like apple's headset with over 3000px microled/micro-oled for good contrast, which is not what phones use. Phone displays are where cheap vr headsets use now.

Reminder that when zuckerberg was looking to buy oculus, it was rumored that he would only purchase the company if oculus could poach key valve employees before the deal. Around the same time, some valve VR employees suggested valve should share their VR R&D with oculus with no contracts or strings attached. Those same employees later left valve and traded coats for oculus and zuck bought it.

That's why valve hates zuck. They announced the index during facebook's F8 conference. And it may remain a tradition to announce VR products during meta's presentations. The next one is September 27th

I think it was Michael Abrash who did it, the other Quake guy. I also recall John Carmack talked about how he and Gabe aren't in speaking terms anymore due to some things about VR tech so maybe he had hands in Oculus-Valve conflict as well.

I also don't blame them. Those guys need to get paid what they are worth. They probably didn't want to work in R&D forever with no products in sight. I feel like the valve index only exists at all because the betrayal happened.

Lot of bad blood came off of that debacle too I reckon. At that point in time Valve fired a lot of people and dissolved its Augmented Reality division as well. Their flat management model is both a blessing and a curse for them imo. All that freedom of creativity, but at the same time the lack of accountability leads to an opening for its ruthless competitors who is not for all that flower and sunshine to exploit them and fuck them up.

            Anonymous

Valve needs to realize their flat management is a false paradise supported by middlemanning PC sales and bleeding gambling addicts for virtual items. If they want to change anything they have to tell their employees what to do.

They better be working on a game for this shit

CS is the top played game on a steam. I don't know why they don't make CS VR. It's not a fast movement speed game, and VR needs a AAA simple multiplayer game that people play regularly. No single player experience you're done with in a few hours is going to replace that.

I used my CV1 exclusively for porn for like 5 years and it finally died somehow. Probably gonna get a Quest 3 to replace it... and maybe the resolution is finally good enough to watch movies on a theater screen. I watched a few movies on CV1, but the resolution was very bad and the god rays were terrible and ruined the picture to the point where I'm not sure how the fuck they got away selling it with that flaw. Hopefully the pancake lens remove them entirely, gonna have to wait for reviews. The games are just a bonus honestly.

    VR was a niche in 1988, 1998, 2008 and 2018.
VR will continue to be a niche in 2028.

Have you seen the FPS of these new games?
A very high fidelity game using UE5 hasn't even released yet.
Bethesda can still cripple top end hardware that ran last year's games at 90fps 4k.

Two 4kx4k 90fps screens? VR? Lmao get the fuck out never gonna happen.
