Visual Novels

Is there any greater sign of the medium slowly dying than there being no good or relevant vns to come out after S;G? What vns are you reading now if any?

    False.

Not only are there tons of good and relevant VNs coming out every year, your panicked description of the medium as "slowly dying" is a severely delayed reaction considering how they've been killing VNs every year since like 2015 in Japan.

So it's not dying but it is dying? How does what you said make any sense?

What VN should I read anons? The only ones I've read are Stein's Gate, 2235AD, Clannad, Planeterian and Narcissu. I liked them all, but I don't know if I like the type of story SG was. I think I prefer something more sappy and/or directly occult.

If you don't mind some mediocre tactics gameplay tacked on you'll probably like Utawarerumono. The first one is pretty mediocre, but 2 and 3 are excellent. The 1st one is very important for the story, so you can't skip it. They're all on steam, but the remake of the 1st one came out later and is still somewhat overpriced so just pirate it.

          >Utawarerumono.
I've got an aversion to settings like that, but I'll check it out. It would not be the first time trying something I didn't really liked turned out well.

          >2236AD when you have only read 4 other VNs
I didn't think I would ever see something like this, what made you read a VN which only has 86 reviews on steam and nobody talks about?

          >what made you read a VN which only has 86 reviews on steam and nobody talks about?
Some anon in a horror themed thread said it was cool and posted a high quality version of a 10/10 Opening song that was apparently changed at some point before I got the VN. I can't find the old version anymore much to my dismay. I generally find media by either randomly choosing things that seem neat or by convincing word of mouth, I've always hated the idea of ratings systems or popularity being used to determine whether something is worth seeing because that system doesn't account for anything but the basic question of "did you like X?".
He also spoke about a similar VN about shadow people or something to that extent, but I couldn't remember what it was by the time I finished.

I get it, I just happen to be a fan and 2236 isn't something I would recommend a complete beginner to the medium.
            >changed the OP
I didn't know, that's kind of sad since it was so good
The only video I can find on youtube has the same OP but with different vocals, which I think were these https://soundcloud.com/nobumitsu-shikine/solved9 but editing some parts out
            >He also spoke about a similar VN about shadow people or something to that extent, but I couldn't remember what it was by the time I finished.
It wasn't me but I bet it was MYTH, another bizarre lesser known VN.

              >2236 isn't something I would recommend a complete beginner to the medium.
I'm not really a beginner so to speak otherwise I would have just kept reading VNs past 5. I just sort of play, watch, read anything that tickles my fancy and wanted something to read. But I can imagine a lot of people are similar and just get recommended or find for themselves something outside the norm as their entry point, I doubt every single VN reader actually has SG as their first one (mine was Clannad coming from being an anime secondary for the record)

              >The only video I can find on youtube has the same OP but with different vocals
Yeah, it's the same vocal songs. Apparently for whatever reason the one who sung the originals wanted them to remove it, so it's all new singers. They're still good, but Melty has a god tier voice.

Yeah, I think it was that. Seems very familiar.

Some people actually go out and play games instead of waiting around to be told which ones to play.

The only people who would consider visual novels "dying" are people who don't read visual novels.

I wonder why there's such a persistent idea that visual novels are dying. Is it the same newbies who read 2 or 3 VNs and think they've seen everything of worth?

It's usually the type that reads one visual novel, claims it's the best visual novel ever made and refuses to read or acknowledge anything that isn't the first thing they've read.

I didn't say that S;G is the best visual novel, just that it's the last good one. Maybe you shouldn't be making so many assumptions about things you don't really know about.

what was so revolutionary about it? never felt like there were many choices and the art isn't spectacular or anything. memes aside, the only other VN besides steins that impressed me was school days. Are there any other vns with as much actual animation?

        Anonymous

not "actual animation" as in straight up anime cutscenes but Mahoyo is one of the most visually impressive visual novels ever made.

VN died as a genre when they abandoned the PC-98 formula of huge interfaces with a hand drawn pixel art scene as the center visual.

You're limiting yourself to the same story and character archeypes that Stein's; Gate already perfected that way. Nips are only capable of repeating tropes. A cool yet socially inept otaku who hangs out with a sweet childhood friend, a fiery redhead, and a tomboy. I've just described the main cast of all Nip stories ever told.
