I finished one playthrough of it and I don't recommend it, I couldn't be stuffed going for getting the true ending in NG+ that's how little I ended up enjoying it.

I am going to start reading GNOSIA later today

If Digimon Survive is 70% VN and 30% SRPG gameplay, Gnosia is more like 70% werewolf game and 30% VN.

I finished it twice (Moral and True endings) and I recommend it. The characters are pretty nice and the gameplay, while simple, is fun if you enjoy SRPGs, raising numbers, and collecting mons. The choices in the story seem more impactful than most games I've personally played, and the endings are wildly different from one another. If you like Digimon, you'll enjoy Survive

Definitely feeling this. Everything I'm playing is either a classic or years old at this point, everything current is plagued by shitty nu-anime art, a horribly unoriginal rehash of either Higurashi, Steins Gate, or Danganronpa, or a shit tier eroge from china just meant to get 2 bucks out of you for a fap to some traced art, or western Renpy trash.

Finished Corpse Factory yesterday. It's probably the best Western made VN I've played it, but still the story gets really stupid towards the end.

The anorexic serial killer MC jerking off to her murders was pretty sick though, genuinely repulsive.

Just finished this today, actually. I'm of the agreement that the prologue and first chapter start off really fricking strong, and then kind of peters out near the end as a bunch of implausible shit happens out of nowhere. Still pretty good though, great music, good VA (Kojiro's voice is amazing) and decent art.

there is a lot of shit that goes unexplained, though

Yes, Kojiro had the best VA (although the MC being Aiba from AI The Somnium Files was pretty cool too), but him chopping off his own arm was the dumbest fricking thing in the whole game. It's also roughly the point where the story stopped making sense, which is a huge shame.

Quickly made me think of it as one of the best VN this year to one of the worst thanks to very bad chapter 3, Everything related to Emi and her boyfriend and the second organization should be scrapped as well as Kojiro becoming a mystic leader at the end. Oh and also everything related to his dead wife in a wall is moronic. Overall 4/10 for at least trying to become like Dead Note with a A team crew and interesting protagonist.

          >Is the first one better than this?
IMO NG is much better, paces itself nicely around its limited number of rooms while Death Mark has to pad things out and feels pretty repetitive and barren as a result, until you hit the DLC.

          >The edginess of the MC made NG unreadable for me after a while.
His edge dies after the intro and he's a non-character by chapter 2, they lose interest in pushing that real fast.
NG has its issues (what's up with the expression menu) but the protag isn't really one of them. Even the goon in the intro shows up as a friendly later.
But if the protag was your only sticking point, sure give Death Mark a try. Death Mark's protag is completely inoffensive, I hear they're bringing him back.

Don't listen to that moron. Death Mark is actualy scary and choices matter. NG has shit protagonist and only 2 major annoying companions. Its crap and almost entire game is a rehash of the same locations which are mostly bland anyway, like samey looking street or office. Ending is also moronic and has no real impact on the player or the protag.

          >playing the sequel first
Why do people do this? Knowing that human sized dolls can be evil completely blows the antagonist reveal in death mark. I liked both games for different reasons. I liked NG for fleshing out the characters and giving them more than two sprites, I also liked that they fleshed out the backstories of the spirits to make them look more like spirits of former humans than crazy monsters. Killer peach and the follow up chapter afterwards were the best cases in the series. Followed by red riding hood, that's where the series hit it's stride as far as puzzle solving, character interaction, and atmosphere. I liked Death Mark for it's puzzle solving, atmosphere, and exploration. They really limited where you could go in NG.

Has a story ever ruined itself so hard in the last 1/3 of the runtime?
Everything before the end of Darkness is a 9/10. Everything after is a 6/10 at best.
I don't even care about the answers to the mysteries, all the answers were what I imagined or as I moronic as I imagined they would be. But the whole story revolved around the fun werewolf game and then they go like 20 hs of boring explanation with no werewolf game while dropping the tone into a moronic comedy.

      Anonymous

It definitely peaks during the Werewolf route while the Deathloop route is a bit dragged out, but ruined is a bit harsh, I liked a few of those exposition segments with Kiyo and the Old Man and such.

      Anonymous

the explanation portion of the game was quite bad, but a lot of people really overstate how good the rest of raging loop is

its mafia segments are really basic, the music is constantly blaring the same shitty song in your ears, and the game cannot decide whether it wants to throw a joke in your face or be serious half the time

        Anonymous

The answers were lacking indeed. the reveal that the senile old man was the boss werewolf who killed them in every loop of the corruption failed to take them doesn't make any sense. I can't see how he was not shot to death when he died tripping on his foot in the end .

Also there were lot of loose ends, like how the thing in the end of darkness arc appeared and how the power to summon it was taken away from rikako when the light goes off and also the secret fbi organization stuff. Despite its flaws i liked it and It is still better than 90% of the VN out there. The VN should have had more of Hashimoto vs Haruaki moments.

          Anonymous

All of those loose ends are resolved in the "revelations" extra and the short stories you get at the end (don't worry, they aren't worth your time, and they add like 6hs of more boring exposition for a story that lost all mystery ages ago).
Actually that's the thing. There's a reason why in every mystery novel everything is explained by the detective in 1 short chapter immediately after the last clue is given. Once the mystery is over, the reader stopped paying attention to the story. After Darkness the story should have been wrapped up by 2 hs later tops.

            Anonymous

I think running through certain parts with revelations is worth it. It answers several questions, like why some routes suddenly end despite you doing the right thing. Some of the extra shit is really good. It's neither
            >too little and thus pointless
            >too much and thus exhaustive
The side stories... I read one and i had to skip alot but it was okay. Probably skippable for all.

          Anonymous

          >doesn't make sense
The author basically tries to retcon it in the extra material by saying all the supernatural stuff was real, the protagonist has psychic powers that let him rewrite reality so supernatural events become mundane so long as he can come up with a convincing explanation.

Really? what the frick? That would change everything. I am going to read revelation mode and the extra short stories to see if it's convincing enough. If it isn't then my opinion on this VN would change drastically for the worse.

              Anonymous

Revelations mode just reveals that the little girl is also psychic and used her powers to stop Rikako when the lights went off she's actually basically only in the game to be a cameo for the writer's other jpn only VN since she appears in that. There's a side story were the reporter lady meets the real Shin'nai who is shown eating the old man in the afterlife and the stuff about haruaki having subconscious psychic powers that let him change the mystery is mentioned briefly by sheep and not fleshed out all that much because it's sequel bait. Don't go in expecting this to have been seriously thought out, the author still never has Haruaki come up with explanations for why chiemi fricking melted etc.

              >spoiler
Seems like battler has some stiff competition right there.

Umineko is basically not even a mystery in a sense.

                >Umineko is basically not even a mystery in a sense.
Did we read the same VN? Half of Umineko is classical closed room murder mystery scenarios and detective work. Raging Loop can't be called a classical mystery since the protagonist's viewpoint is unreliable and almost zero clues or murder deductions actually take place, it's just a horror story.

Absolute not. Fricking up the narrative, horrible characters, a discarded premise, and so forth.

eh half of the "mystery" in Umineko is playing mental gymnastics with definitions, dishonest storytelling and how red text can be subjectively interpreted by people with mental conditions.

I suppose it's still a step up from the "mystery" in Higurashi where worms in people's brains (that you conveniently can't see with a microscope) make them crazy.

                >>this isn't an acceptable answer
correct. There is no way you could possibly come to that being the conclusion for so many elements of the "mystery" in Higurashi. It borders on nanomachines in MGS-tier with how convenient its mechanics are tailored to the plot.

Even in chapter 1, you can't just assume Keiichi is being paranoid because of brain parasites and even after you find out there's brain parasites you STILL can't assume all the shit he experiences was him being paranoid because he's literally attacked by the Mountain Dog people twice in the chapter. It's too convenient for the plot that it makes him paranoid that he thinks spicy food=needle in food.

The entire mystery of Higurashi relies on Hanyuu not telling who the killer is to Rika because...she just doesn't want to, ok?

Umineko STARTS as a pure mystery, while Higurashi doesn't until the cop appears and tells them whats up and you try to figure out shit when chapter 1 ends.

But then Umineko drops the mystery COMPLETELY. Only later does some random guy come in and tell us the solutions.
It's not even Battler who solves it for the audience. He solves it and fricks off.
                That's not a proper mystery.

Higurashi: the mystery is there the entire time, for every chapter and gets a resolution from the MCs.

                >But then Umineko drops the mystery COMPLETELY.
Yeah, it drops it after the answers are revealed in Episode 7.
Higurashi's mystery is not realistically solvable. Umineko's mystery is.

                Anonymous

What. More people solved Higurashi than Umineko in real life.
And it didn't rely on "well, the MC wasn't in the room, so everything the audience sees can be fake :^)"

Parasites that affect behavior EXIST in our real world. Diseases that cause hallucinations exist in our world. >What. More people solved Higurashi than Umineko in real life.
The "Shannontrice Theory" was by far the most popular theory after Episode 4.
                >And it didn't rely on "well, the MC wasn't in the room, so everything the audience sees can be fake :^)"
I don't know why shitposters keep making fun of this despite the fact that this "mechanic" is introduced in Episode 2 and is even explicitly explained in Episode 3 if you're a brainlet who didn't understand it.

You can't say that the mystery is "always present" in Higurashi, a game where the first half of each chapter is full of mostly pointless SOL scenes, and then say that Umineko "drops the mystery completely".

Anon, I like Raging Loop, but like half if not more of the twists rely on Haruaki's narration lying or not telling you what he actually thinks. At least Umineko tells you that the narration is unreliable in Episode 2.

It's both, this might blow your mind, but stories can be about more than one thing.

I liked Raging Loop, and I understand why it went the way it did. I think the author was worried he'd be mocked for taking his own game too seriously, mainly due to the solution arc portions with Hisako, the Nosato clan, the kanji wordplay (with places never before introduced in the game), and Haruaki's rationalizations.
They were torn between wanting a haunting mystery with supernatural elements, a tragedy about cults and poor Japanese, and a Layton-style unmasking of the big bad.
There were a lot of new faces to the industry with RL, so it's hardly any wonder they lacked confidence in the end product. It was good though, and the author gave us extra scenes with the characters as a neat encore. Loved the ghostess innkeeper.

That part is a bit much, but I think the more important thing is the fact that they couldn't decide whether or not magic existed was what was wrong there.

Why is RL so popular with chinks? Most of the fan-content i find of it is in chinese.

Because the main character is a masculine guy who pursues women. Beats out the "You were nice to me" shit 100%.

          >If they were satisfied with this game they would make a sequel that they were baiting in the epilogue.
They did. It just wasn't localized. "Death Match Love Comedy".
          >They figured out they wrote themselves into corner with Chiemi ending and by making the curse fake
Check the extra stories. Author found another direction to take that.

          I honestly don't like Haruaki.
Characters that play the double role of detective and MC always come off as sociopaths, because they have to have sentimental moments with the cast and also be completely detached from them.
Everyone is obsessed with making their detectives the new Sherlock Holmes, but the Watson archetype is just as important, since they take most of the emotional work in the story out of the detectives' shoulders, like Maya for Phoenix, or the police squad for L, or even Mamiya for Hashimoto in a way.

          >Characters that play the double role of detective and MC always come off as sociopaths, because they have to have sentimental moments with the cast and also be completely detached from them.
Yes, and part of Haruaki's character is that he actually is a deranged sociopath. Author leaned into it.

Been reading "FLOWERS -The volume of summer-" lately. Overall it feels much better than the first part, mainly because they are focusing on 2 heroines instead of trying to pull off a love triangle. Also tsundere x tsundere is mega cute.
My only two complaints so far are Yuzuriha not getting enough screentime and this boat. Is this even a legit way to place rowlocks? It doesn't look like you'll get enough leverage to row easily and if you try to retract paddles a bit more, they'll just get in the way of each other. Maneuverability of the boat will probably suffer as well. The boat that long should also have seats. Guess they just sacrificed the boat's credibility for the sake of the scene.

      Anonymous

I finished one playthrough of it and I don't recommend it, I couldn't be stuffed going for getting the true ending in NG+ that's how little I ended up enjoying it.

      [...]
If Digimon Survive is 70% VN and 30% SRPG gameplay, Gnosia is more like 70% werewolf game and 30% VN.

yea, Gnosia is more gameplay than most VN and it's pretty fun. But it can be a pain to unlock everything. But it's worth a glance. Maybe even money!
but only if you like Werewolf/Mafia

      Anonymous

Not worth playing for the story since all characters have like 2 pages of dialogs and things you unlock about them barely even matter. Gameplay loop itself is interesting for like an hour or 100 games

No, not really. For the steam version you have to redownload the game if you want to change the language.

That sucks. The inbuilt option makes life easier to learn and the other option of texthooking is slightly inconvenient. Umineko and 9-Nine had the option to switch, it helped me learn a lot.

Finished all the Pixelfade games (got them during a steam sale months ago and finally found the time to read them). If anyone's interested, my suggestion is to only play Ace Academy since it's the only good one and fun to replay since it has many choices that help you roleplay as different characters. You can play Kaori after story if you liked her route in Ace Academy, this one is short (around 4 hours) but not bad. Crystalline is meh and ethereal enigma is terrible (the only good thing was Kira, but even her ending was disappointing).

      >picking up the utawa trilogy since it's on sale and i've heard a lot of good things about it
I know most anons love it, but I finished Mask of deception on my psvita and found it boring. You don't really get to influence the story through choices and the characters relationships didn't really strike me as great. It also felt too long and slow considering it was only 1/2 story. Maybe it gets better in mask of truth, but I really didn't feel like trying it.

I'm exactly the same on both fronts. I loved how Matsuribayashi was so uplifting only because of the suffering from all 7 previous chapters. Not in a meta sense (stories should be balanced with both sad and happy) but purely looking from the story's perspective. Everybody gave their all, losing their way (like Shion in 2/5 and Keichi in 1) but still struggling for a better tomorrow and that was the requirement for Matsuribayashi's existance. What a beautiful game.

I think VNs are the best way to learn Japanese but you'll have to start with simpler games (moege) before moving onto the ones with more complex language or plot.

He means learn Jap, separate from reading this.

Really you can learn Jap with any VN you are interested in, even that one but I seriously wouldn't recommend it, that game in particular I struggled with sometimes. You will just go slower and look up more words.

The dialogue recycling ruined everything good the game had for me. The twists weren't grand and exciting, I was always like "is that it?", The only parts I really enjoyed were the Sora dates and that's mostly it.

            Anonymous

No one told me to like it. I played it and loved it. The twist is really cool, especially putting the pieces together to realize time gap
Loved the characters too. And amazing music.
Just a shame the Uchi repeats twists.

it is skippable if you use the newer patch that came out, actually

that guy is a moron though, ever17 is pretty good but it's not one of the greats

Yes, the biggest flaw was that when I played it, I could not skip. So painful.
I'd put it up as very good. If the new version allows skipping, it's a must play once.

Cartagra is absolute bullshit because it turns predictable and incredibly clichéd at a certain point of the story. Even a novice writer would have written a better story but it ends up like it was written by a moronic brainlet. Never have I seen a greater waste of potential in a VN.

I've been avoiding 428 because I don't like how type moon handled all the random bad endings you can get in their past work and it has the same tag. is it handled better in 428?

Yeah as long as it's reaally schizo. I want to play Chaos;Head but I'll wait for the Noah version, what's AI2? AI Somnium Files 2?
        [...]
Well sorry... what's a second rate detective game mean? Does the VN have to have gameplay for you?
        >works in player choice in a nice way that doesn't feel at odds with the vn style
I don't really know what this means either but I can try find some VNs for you, I just thought you wanted something "professional made" and like Ace Attorney.

doesn't have to have gameplay but having something unique above choosing dialogue options that isn't just a complete breakaway from a vn (like adding in 3d shooting sections) is really appreciated by me.

            Anonymous

my issue with the random bad endings in past type moon games? I just don't like having go to back and read stuff again (especially if I didn't save) and it being out of my control. in ace attorney you can fail a lot but you can think it through to succeed. it's not like how you can choose to go to the school at night and then randomly get killed by a vampire in tsukihime

              Anonymous

Yes, I meant in type moon.
Hmmm, I would say 428 has a bit of it, but it's pretty quick bad endings.
I'm gonna be honest, I think the proper choices are obvious enough. There's an achievement for getting a certian number of bad endings and I'm not even half way there and I've beaten the game.

There's no save option in this game and you can skip read text immediately but as I said, you won't have to go back to a previous choice from too far.
The game play is pretty different.

Basically you play in hour blocks, starring different characters. So you play their POV for that one hour (like taht show 24 apparently). You make choices and some can lead to bad endings or finally the 'true' end of their POV in that chapter.
Once all characters meet their true end, the next hour unlocks (sometimes with different characters and their POV).
BUT! sometimes you cannot progress in a POV until you make the right choice in another character. So you can't go through a door, because it's locked, and that's because in another POV you didn't unlock it. So the POVs intersect, alot, but sometimes they have to do it to unlock the next part.

This sounds annoying but it's not. It's really cool actually. The only downside I saw was that sometimes you don't know which decision fricked you up (but you can semi brute force it) or check a guide. But for me this happened maybe twice.

          Anonymous

428 has a shitload of bad endings but they're incredibly well organized, cause and effect are all segmented into micro-blocks of player actions in the overall story, they're easy to undo/subvert and it's a comedy, so them coming out of nowhere is funny.

My only issue with 428 is no instant text display. And that's sincerely the only issue.

and Nasubi/Yanagisita pretty much disappearing halfway into the game
having said that, 428 is a must play
I spent upwards of $1k collecting *all* the pre-order bonus telephone cards, the rental demo disc, the official Ecokiti shirt (pic is unofficial), the soundtrack, Kamiki Aya's CD single etc

Well, they only appear if they play a role in that hour.

Dating VNs for example, you could FINISH but not get every girl.

I'd recommend Remember11, it's 5x deeper than Ever17 shit, the ONLY drawback is that it's kinda incomplete, but you can read a certain website that explains everything after you finish the game to connect the dots. Still a mindfrick of a VN, a 9/10

      Anonymous

Because the most the game has left for discussion is
      >who kicked the fricking can?
As the other anon said, it's better to play remember 11 if you want to play anything out of the 3 because of how much ever 17 recycles content and is overall kinda bland in a bland uninteresting setting.

t could have been an absolute masterpiece, but it seems like they just cut off the last few hour or hours, and it could have been an easy 10/10 perfection of a visual novel.

I JUST finished AI Somnium last night. Man , Date is such a hilarious based pervert and a chad.
Decent plot twists, but not the best i've seen in a VN, and that ending scene was completely cringekino lol.

Is Nirvana the sequel as good if not better than AI Somnium? I doubt it'll be as funny without Date

He'd be easily gaslit into doing it for his shrine waifu. He just wouldn't be the leader, would need Haruaki/Chiemi/Old Man etc to do it.

          >not doing it
Only Kanzo and Takumi wouldn't do it. Hashimoto isn't averse to killing innocents over being killed, that's why he's so dangerous. He'll burn through half the village to smoke you out, he'll just do it deliberately rather than in a half-arsed trying-to-play-nice way that usually results in way more deaths.

Lie about your name wherever you go.

      I'm playing Gnosia
      Is it SWJ shit?
They asked me if I'm non binary at the beginning, and during a loop a character stated she is non binary
Is it just a terrible translation or is it garbage?

OH frick off. Its just alien shit.

they're literally alien races, they dont have the same concepts of gender as us. One guy wants to become a cat. Just stfu and enjoy things instead of letting them live rent free in your head

I played Gnosia back when it released on Switch and I don't remember that at all. How pozzed did they make the translation after I played it?

It's on the Switch version too. They just randomly assign shit to people. Probably so that you can have Setsu who the true love of your MC be with anyone.

None of this matters. Put a little sticker over it if you must.

Just finished pic related. Im not too used to VNs yet, do all or most of them spend an unnecesary amount of resources in openings/endings?

The main "party" of protagonist's portraits were only used when they were presented and at the end when reconfirming how close they are.
Did they pay for a song already existing or did they pay to create a song for an hentai vn?

      >did they pay to create a song for an hentai vn?
theres an entire genre for hentai VN music, generally its called Denpa Music albeit thats a very broad category. Its probably not as expensive as you think cause the MV are usually just sliding still images and the singers are the girls they're already paying to voice the VN

its also a pretty good way to advertise hentai in Akihabara. They blare the music in the store or on the street and then you're like, "wait why is that so catchy" and walk over there.

Higurashi, Umineko and Raging Loop all have bad endings that nobody wants to talk about but Raging Loop is the only one that gets cosntantly shit on it for

I wouldn't say Higurashi had a bad ending.
Raging Loop is GOD tier but its ending really is bad.
Umineko is honestly bad all throughout, not just the ending.

And actually, all 3 get shit on.

How can it be when it has among the worst endings in the world?
        Insane amounts of meta
Battler survives but he's not real Battler
Ange's life just plain sucks and it keeps getting worse
Legit nothing pays off and the worst solution is the real one.

I just finished up Full Metal Muramasa. I've seen it hyped for so long and it has lived up to its kamige credentials. My only disappointment is chachamaru didn't get a fully fleshed-out route. I wish Kageaki could've donned her more. Also the h scenes in the story are short as hell, especially wtf is up with that. Such a wienertease.

Friendly reminder that if you read Raging Loop in English, you did not, by any stretch of the imagination, read the VN.

I mostly only play otome and like Code: Realize, Collar x Malice, PotBB/AH, Hakuoki, Even If Tempest, and Norn9. What non otome romance VNs would you recommend if I wanted to try something new? Preferably something without porn.
