By look alone the Metal Gear is literally a railgun coupled to a BIG ASS RADOME which mean it need to acquire target itself ASAP.

If we go a bit more realistic with railgun, the range would at most make it an artillery system who cannot be reached by anything but cruise missile... which it can intercept.
Reduce the size of the projectile and with proper rapid fire + accuracy, it would absolutely snipe missiles.
As a giant bipedal robot it could reach high-ground normally inaccessible to anti-air vehicle.

The less realistic bit is Metal Gear being able to reach intercontinental range with a railgun, who know if it's just not just the lies told to the DoF to get funding?
By itself the MG cannot hide, a non-propelled nuclear projectile is limited to ballistic trajectory, the heating of the projectile in the atmosphere would make it easy to calculate the projectile trajectory from any satellite with IR sensor.

    >TL;DR
    >Otacon was right to be surprised MG can be used for nuclear weapon.

Let's be honest, the goal was all appearance, does a walking railgun shooting stealth nuke look like a doomsday superweapon?
Sure do, so who care if someone is capable of doing the math? He'll buy the game too because it's awesome.

You can only ask so much.
I'm happy the Metal is even half-legit as an artillery vehicle.

Also I wish there was a game where you pilot Metal-Gear like vehicle without it simply being shooting arcade against normal vehicle.
Who do I have to kill to get that? Putin so Ukrainian game developers can make it? Ok I'm going, be right back.

I always figured it was meant for a medium range nuclear artillery strike
Like a Davy Crockett system was designed for short range use mounted to a truck, but is limited to terrain the truck can traverse.
I think the idea was walking this thing through some badlands where no one is looking and take it up a fucking mountain where its legs can stabilize it even on an incline. Then it can walk away.
Bypassing SALT loopholes was 100% the main use of the railgun though

Hal thought he was making a missle defense platform
He didn't even know they were gonna put a railgun on it, another team did the main armament and he probably thought they would slap some sort of interceptor missle batteries instead. Basically he just engineered the chassis and its use of close range weaponry.

and he can't have been unaware of the railgun since he would need to plan the radar position/recoil and bracing.

If we introduce logic/realism, the most credible take is that Metal Gear can't be used to launch nuke.

Launch intercontinental nukes maybe, but using it as nuclear artillery is still on the table, such projects very much existed in tracked form.

Given the Metal Gear make a joke of inflatable decoy, nothing would be "stealth" about the projectiles it fire. It's also so rare you can afford to watch it 24h/24h even without IR satellite.
Stealth nukes (+ treaty avoidance) was the only rational justifying Metal gear as the ultimate superweapon.
Remove it and it's just a nuke launcher that you hope cannot be intercepted.
At most a first stage for a hypersonic gliding vehicle but without the range and more costly.

The most ""rational"" use would be as an artillery unit that shoot cheap projectile so far away (300km? 500km?) that only cruise missiles could hope to reach it, and it's well equipped to intercept those.

He was in denial about and just went along so he can continue to work on his robots. Natasha kinda points that out. They did something similar with Huey's personality but Otacon managed to shake it off and not go batshit delusional in the end.

It's supposed to operate independently and covertly on any terrain, that's the main justification.
      >how is it even fueled?
It was the early 00's from the lens of the 90's no one cared if it used 1000 barrels a day at the time the game was written.

You can change metal gear to anything like a james bond space reflector laser satellite or a regular ICBM they are gonna launch.
The only difference would be whether or not you fight a giant robot
