Yeah basically, but without the charm and grounded feel of a Cormac story. I think it's because The Road serves more as warning, The Last of Us is obsessed with societal degradation. Zombie fiction is more or less death cult shit. The father/daughter relationship was just the bait, and my mom told me to never take bait.

I once tried "pretending to be moronic" on Ganker. Got like ten yous on a post that took seconds to type. Just immediately thought to myself "people enjoy this?"

All experiences filter two ways. You can be above or below something. True satire is about superiority. A good friend of mine I consider one of the greatest satirists alive. He has a gift for adopting any voice and any position and making it his own while retaining its essentials. He could argue with intelligent people using the voice and beliefs of a moron and win stunningly. It's beautiful to watch. The ability to transform something low into something high is almost alchemical.

By contrast, what are you doing? What is the craft in this? Is there any? Are you superior to anybody here? Are you superior to this thread? Dishonesty doesn't make you superior. And putting less of yourself into something than you could is debasing. Are you outsmarting anybody? Do you believe you have any claim to superiority over anybody here? Your presence is displeasing, but there's no inherent art in that. A superior presence can upset and outrage. And so can an inferior one. And just because your pose is adopted that doesn't mean that the impression is untrue. A moron can pose as a different kind of moron. If people call him a moron they have not been owned.

What is the own here? The time I've taken to type this? The fact we all see idiotic posts if we look at this thread? Congratulations, you have the same influence over the internet as an Indian 10 year old. Only you chose to be this low a thing.

                >Jak goes from a mute goofy movie character to a talking one who speaks in PG-13 2000s nu-metal edge and is now the chosen one. Awesome. I love character development
And yet its more interesting than anything that happens in J&D.

Nothing "happens" in J&D and that's why I liked it. It's a simple linear display of solid craft that only has the ambition to entertain and sell. There's no pretense, no part of it that isn't there for a clear reason.

Why the hell does Jak 2 have "worldbuilding" and "character development"? Because those totemic notions are pillars of SERIOUS gaming to stupid people who weigh pop-media and art like bags of grain that their stupid peasant ancestors bought at the market. "How much story do I get?" "Are they trying to gyp me on gameplay? More or less mechanics than last time?"

Hijacking this thread to make a related point.

Holy shit Naughty Dog have been god-awful cynical pieces of shit selling fodder to animals since Jak 2. I checked out Jak & Daxter recently, expected shit, had a good time. It's ugly because it's American "toon" sensibilities, everyone looks like a character from A Goofy Movie or The Nutshack, but the game IS A CARTOON so it works. It's a genuinely impressive and funny example of making expressive use of 3D animation. The actual game parts are dead simple, but that's fine. It's just a simple cartoon adventure. It becomes Crash Bandicoot in the last third which is awful, minecarts and gems and barrels and annoying jumps, but most of the thing is just trying to look nice and be impressive and funny and charming. And it works.

Then Jak 2, which I heard was really interesting and impressive, was absolutely putrid. All of these games are hideous, but Jak 1 is redeemed by being a cartoon. It is a completely realised vision I simply don't share the taste for. Jak 2 on the other hand is vestigial "toon" elements put towards being an edgy Halo and GTA successor/rip-off. It feels like a Star Wars ripoff that exists within the universe of A Goofy Movie.

Everything is ugly, and the characters who lent themselves so well to exaggerated expressions and movements in the first game now just flatly glower at each other and spout pg-13 edge all over the place. And the game parts themselves are far more present and far worse. I read the game was widely considered "hard". I just found it absolutely obnoxious. They built a great system for moving around simple 3D spaces with more emphasis on just getting around than precise and challenging maneuvers, then 2 decided to be a hardcore and implement new parts so now you're mario with a gun you can't aim firing off all over the place while jumping instant death pits surrounded by knockdown hazards and your last checkpoint was way back when.

ND have no vision and no integrity. They are hacks.

      >It feels like a Star Wars ripoff that exists within the universe of A Goofy Movie.
That's what makes it good, though. It still has a lot of sensibilities from its predecessor but does a lot more worldbuilding and character development.

I don't see what's good about simultaneously being derivative, juvenile, and hideous. The sensibilities it keeps are indefensible removed from their original context. The visual direction and style of the characters was built for cartoonish motion and expression and situations. Placed in a "serious" world where little of that is indulged, they're just absurd and ugly. And as for "worldbuilding" and "character development", again, the foundations are an absurd cartoon. What can be built on that? The game is stupid. Extremely stupid. Jak goes from a mute goofy movie character to a talking one who speaks in PG-13 2000s nu-metal edge and is now the chosen one. Awesome. I love character development.

Jak 2 was 100% an effort at cashing in on the then popularity of GTA3. I still remember kids at school saying the new Jak would have guns and cars and thinking they were talking out of their asses.

I don't actually hate cynicism as a rule. Taking things which work and making them your own is a good thing. Japan does it and that's why they're so great. But in Jak 2 I feel like there's virtually no appreciation or understanding, just desperate throwing at the wall. This is how you *don't* observe someone else's success and built on it. While by contrast I would say Breath of the Wild is a perfect example of how you do it successfully.

Crash Bandicoot is fine when it stays away from gimmicks, like the boulder levels, auto scrolling animal riding and the racing levels.

Crash bandicoot as a game feels like a boring waste of my time, and as a cartoon it's juvenile, ugly, and stupid. I don't care if the platforms I jump across are interestingly arranged, might as well do sudoku. I feel like the only real interest Crash can have now is as an example of what was being done on the PS1, it's history. I don't think "fine" has any lasting interest to history as anything but something that existed. There are far more interesting things to look at and spend time with.

Jak 2 had better gameplay too. It's just an improvement in every aspect. Chasing a newer trend instead of making another Banjo clone was the right call.

"Gameplay" as an abstract concept always struck me as stupid. If you want to talk about the appeal of the mechanical input against obstacle based stuff you do as a player that ball is constantly rolling towards more perfect novelty and time wasting. That element of a game's appeal genuinely ages. If you want to waste time smoothly Jak 2 is surpassed. Games are designed by casino game psychologists now. They're better at this.

As for better "gameplay" within the premise of Jak, I disagree entirely. Jak is not improved by guns, cars, and edge. Jak 1 is defensible as a complete realisation of a coherent thing it aspires to be. Jak 2 is not. It is a transitionary being caught between ideals. If you like it as a cartoon play Jak1, if you like cool science fiction serious stuff play Halo or something. Jak 2 as Jak 2 I see absolutely no appeal in, unless maybe you're the kind of degenerate who sees lasting appeal in A Goofy Movie. I think that liking the incongruence is completely degenerate and moronic, but such people can exist. There are people who want giant feet and pseudo-furries and mario jumps in their grand theft auto.

I think you picked the wrong hobby if you're looking for meaningful experiences. Even an RPG that deals with complex issues is a waste of your time.

I'm in the only art field that's still halfway alive. There's extraordinary potential here. That's why I'm so outraged that such utterly reactionary views have become entrenched so quickly. "A video game is gameplay and story. More mechanics are better gameplay. Stories should have themes, lore, and character development". Cool. Cool. My response, average gamer, is that you should be sodomised with a loaded gun until it eventually discharges, fulfilling the telos of your existence by uniting your colon and brains. Finally granting the power to truly think shit.

Not talking about you, just thinking out loud about "gamers" in general and how badly I want them all thrown off of rooftops.

            >Even an RPG that deals with complex issues is a waste of your time.
The power of video games is to deal with things in a more complex way. Complex subject matter is nothing new. And of course the average gamer can't recognise complexity. The approach should be multimedia, which Japan does instinctively without developing language and standardised process to explain what they're doing. What can we do now that we couldn't before? Killer7 could have been a novel, a VN, a PC game like The Silver Case, a manga, an anime, a live action tv show, etc. But as a "video game" it can pick and choose between all of them. Because it's not really a video game at all. It's called one, and shares a platform with them, but it's a selective, purpose built piece of multimedia. It's not incredible because of its subject matter, though that is highly interesting, or even the craft, it's cool and well assembled, but what really elevates it is decision to unite all of this in such a way. The lateral approach to the possibilities of existing tools. A shooting gallery anime VN conspiracy thriller. Awesome.

Meanwhile average gamer's idea of complex and cutting edge use of the medium is Donkey Kong but he's depressed.

fricking thank you, I loved the game and while the show wasnt great there were some really fun parts, the Bloater scene was so much fun even though it was just mindless shooting. Too many people here think everything has to be like 9/10 in order to be worth watching.

I liked each episode on it's own. As a whole it felt rushed. Ellie and David should've had that bond fighting off clickers, and maybe a scene or a mintage or something showing there were actually infected they ran into on their travels.
