Hlaalu towns are sort of bland though compared to Redoran with their big dead crab and the Telvanni mushrooms. Personally I've always liked the Imperial towns like Pelagiad, Caldera (and Old Ebonheart in TR). Something about these familiar Western colonies in a completely alien setting I find really appealing.

                > Realized
The only thing I realized was I was literally the only reason NPCs existed the second I walked off the boat. Shops never close. NPCs either stand in place waiting for eternity for me to grace them with my presence or walk their designated route ad infinitim hoping I would notice them.
When you get deeper it becomes more apparent you the player are to serviced and not challenged. You can get a quest to kill all the Telvani magisters by the Archmage even if you area telvanni magister. No fricks given.

It's a world which feels genuinely interesting and unique without falling back on expy's for real world cultures and concepts like most fantasy, instead leveraging its extensive lore writing to create a culture that feels based on its own history. Almost everything in the world feels grounded and plausible even if it's outlandish on the face of it. This leads to a world full of giant mushrooms and cities that are built out of giant crab shells but is still presented as mundane, which most people find interesting.
                >it doesn't present shit, there is no dynamism to fricking anything in the game

Why is that so hard to believe? It wasn't the first time I touched it, it was the first time I actually got anywhere in the game. I tried playing it back in 2011 while waiting for Skyrim but my moronic 15 year old brain couldn't take it, much like OP.

I'm in a similar boat. Morrowind is a beloved classic for a reason, and it will be beloved well into the future. The same is demonstrably not true for Oblivion, as that game is exclusively loved by nostalgiagays and everyone else sees it for the piece of shit that it is. And as for Skyrim, I actually played it on release. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now, it put me off from the series for a very long time.

Morrowind has the best main quest in the series, but outside of that all the non Dunmer house questlines are kinda shit and it's combat is dogpoop even with Customized Magic and Enchantments. Oblivion's combat is improved by leaps and bounds, has a better soundtrack, best assassin guild questline in the series, better DLC, actual voiced lines, and more exploration options.

The shitty combat, slow starting speed and crappy stamina system are the least of Morrowind’s problems. It’s the lifeless NPCs and the dull, MMO tier quests that really drag it down. For frick’s sake, Fallout 1 and 2 have infinitely better quests and NPCs, and these are isometric games from the late 90’s.

There are a million ways to solve OPs problem along with every other problem people have in Morrowind, but the only sources of knowledge for the people complaining are youtube videos and 30 minutes of playtime before giving up at the first mudcrab. They've never bothered with experimentation, only guide following, and it shows every single time they post. I don't even like Morrowind ffs.

Nightblade style with Illusion is fun for thief gameplay but it isn't Skyrim, sneak attacks aren't as potent iirc. To level up sneak just hide behind a storekeep and go afk for an hour.
And there's a mod for crafting poisons but it's too easy to break the game with it, same as normal alchemy.

And you should join the Morag Tong too.

It's fine, but you will feel the lack of balance. Mage characters are basically better thief characters, and a good thief character should take illusion at the very least. Thief characters are viable and can beat the game at least.

Cheers, i've got many hours in morrowind, even many playthroughs of various classes and lengths, but i've never gone far as a thief/agent.
like you say, mages can do it all and do it better, but I'd like to explore the hlaalu, TG and Morag Tong questlines. Pretty much know the Redoran, Pax Redoran and temple questlines off by heart by now.

Playing Morrowind for the first time. So far it's pretty good, just got a few concerns after about 13 hours of gameplay
    >Gold seems too easy to come by with soul trapping farming
    >Shifting through each npc for new dialogue opportunities is frustrating since they repeat a lot of the same text
    >I feel overleveled despite just doing a few side quests here and there before continuing on the main quest
Does gold ever become more necessary or did I frick up the balance by getting 10k+ gold from soul trapping?

      Anonymous

i ran into similar issues without even soul trapping. redguard warrior character is loaded with 50k+ gp and i cannot conceive of a way or good reason to spend it. all that was made just from selling high rarity weapons and armor sets. my only moneysink is training skills i don't want to use.

      >Does gold ever become more necessary?
No. The game balance is shit, it's probably the worst of all elder scrolls. It is fun to see people talk about "progression" when most cases are like yours, you play a few hours of the game and you're already a god even when there's still +60hs of content to play. If you want to haven any kind of challenge from now on, you will have to mod the frick out of the game and start over with a new character.
      hardcore rpg btw

There's a lot of ways to get rich early and yours is far from bad. At least you don't dash to some pre-placed Daedric/Glass/Whatever items after learning their locations on UESP.

if you abuse the secret merchants you will always have too much gold. unless you pay for enchants in which case you will never have enough.

Morrowind's balance is borked. You likely haven't run into very many mage enemies yet, hence why you feel so much stronger than the World. Morrowind isn't hard by any means, but they are the actual challenge of the game. Gold seems super easy to come by, until you start needing late game equipment. Provided you aren't looking shit up, it then becomes tedious or difficult to come up with the amount of gold for what you want. If you are looking shit up, the game is fricked from the get go because RPGs are stupidly easy to break in general.

the only thing I've looked up is the definition of things like touch or target, and sometimes where an npc is if I am looking for them for over 10 minutes. Since I'm worried looking this up will spoil npc locations for me, can you tell me if it's possible to use gold to train skills to 100 or if it's capped around 50?

Different trainers have different limits for how much they can teach you. Some of the master trainers start out hostile and need to be charmed

If you enjoyed Morrowind you would have better luck heading back in the series instead of forward. Morrowind was the pivot point between antiquated thinking and progress into the modern age.

This Daggerfall contrarianism is getting old, it's shit and has always been shit. The world size is a hindrance and 99% of it you will never explore and there is zero need to explore it anyways because it has fricking fast travel even more egregious than Skyrim and Oblivion, everything else about the game is directly ripped off from DnD or painfully generic. Oh boy, you can climb, whoop de fricking doo. Morrowind streamlined the ideas and wrapped them up in one of the most fully realized fantasy worlds ever put in a game while getting rid of the tedium and trimming the mechanics so they can flesh each one out more.

The real giga brain take for TES is that it was always a frick-awful series and Morrowind was a complete flash in the pan, lightning in a bottle, lucky break of a game that single handedly carried Bethesda to where they are now.

What a lame thing to complain about. I played this game a week ago and was surprisingly bothered by how non-linear it was. I'm so use to playing linear games that when this game relied on me to push on using my own genuine sense of adventure that I just got bored and quit.
Not a fault of the game itself, but it shows how much of a lazy fricking bastard I am kek

The step by step instructions were a turn off for me as well. The later games trusted the player and gave them the agency to find their own way.
I don't need the devs to do my thinking for me.

I think it's a valid sentiment. Most vidya stories have you playing a character w/ defined personality, relationships and people to care about. In Morrowind you're pretty much alone in a world that gives no fricks about you and you have to actively build yourself reason to care at all about what's going on. Some enjoy that sort of freedom, others like you and me prefer actual characters to play as.

get the "solsthiem rumor fix" and "delayed dark brotherhood attacks" mods then play.

When making a character you need to keep in mind 2 things: speed, and attack.

athletics and speed stat make you go fast, low strength and heavier armor makes you go slower. As long as you dont mess up all 3 you should be fine.
Agility and weapon skill makes you hit stuff more often. as long as you dont neglect both you should be ok.

      Anonymous

Start your character with at least 40 weapon skill, and don't use weapons not part of your skill.
If you get into fights with your fatigue bar less than 75% full, you fricked up.
If you want to move fast, roll a male Nord, Imperial or Orc.
Get Warrior sign to hit more often, Steed sign to move faster or Apprentice if you want to cast spells.

Always choose alteration as a major skill and mysticism as a minor skill. Always pick one weapon and one armor as major skills. For beast races, always add unarmored in addition to your other armor skill. Unarmored only works if you’re wearing at least one piece of armor. For any race, if you plan on using conjured armor, only pick unarmored. If you choose marksman as a skill, make sure to have another weapon skill in addition to marksman. If you want to get the maximum possible health, always pick strength and endurance as favored attributes and level up endurance 5 points every level (look up leveling in Morrowind to learn how to do this effectively.)
Always pick one of these as your sign:
      >the atronach
      >the apprentice
      >the mage
      >the thief
      >the warrior
      >the lady
These are the only signs that give you something that can’t be gotten by other means, therefore all of the other signs eventually become mostly useless. Buy a restore fatigue spell. The cheapest and easiest to cast spell is rest of st. merris which is sold by the guy in the top of the balmora temple. You can cast this even with low restoration. Buy mark, recall, almsivi intervention, divine intervention, telekinesis, water walking, water breathing, levitate, ondusi’s open door and tinur’s hoptoad. Most of these can be found by warping to the various mages guild and buying them. Almsivi intervention can be bought in the basement of the balmora temple. Divine intervention can be bought in the imperial cult shrine downstairs from the sadrith mora mages guild. After buying ondusi’s open door, make an open 100pts to 100pts spell on touch. If you don’t have a magicka bonus from your race or sign, you will need an intelligence of 60 to cast this spell iirc. Join the mages guild and fighters guild for access to free restore magicka, fatigue, and health potions. That’s pretty much it. Following these steps will vastly improve your quality of life when playing this game.

If you want to role play as a thief, you can skip using the open spell, in which case I would advise having security as a major skill. The rest of this advice I would recommend for literally every character

Zoomer here, the game is pretty simple. Had to turn the difficulty all the way up pretty quick and it's just not mentally stimulating enough. Will still beat it though, the story's intriguing.

morrowind is a great game, but with some major issues if you know what you're doing.
for example, as a mage, by the time you get to balmora, you've already beat the game. just exploit alchemy by making restore fatigue potions using vendors w/ infinite restock, then buy out the whole of vvardenfell with the amount of coin you're swimming in. or, even better, make restore magicka potions for an infinite magic pool (bye bye atronach drawbacks). because of the amount of exploits available to the player, it can become boring pretty fricking fast

I never thought that being a walking god would get so boring, having too much utility in an RPG completely borks the progression
