MMO's are like RTS game in the sense that they were once very popular, but fell off because their audience wasn't actually a core audience. Their audiences were made up of people who wanted to play other kinds of games that hadn't been made yet.
Most RTS players just wanted city builders, colony sims, or MOBA games, which is why those genres are more popular now
Most MMO players just wanted to play online co-op games with their friends (tons of online co-op games now), survival crafting games, creative sandbox games, or online pvp games.
MMO's have been outcompeted, that's really all there is to it.

This, the amount of f2p korean/japanese games between 2003-2008. There were literally hundreds of mmorpgs with a population of 1k-30k players each. Majority of these people went to league of legends.
Nah. A lot of people complain about things like dungeon finders and such, but really the energy surrounding mmo's has disappeared because all the players went on to play other games. The only people left that play mmo as a lifestyle thing are people that are dead inside.
Wow made mmos mainstream and not for the chudbros anymore so you got casuals and casuals led to the dumbing down of games because they sucked at mmos. Also almost all mmos for a while tried to be a wowclone but no one really succeeded. Ff14 is a troony game but I think the reason it's so successful is that it offers something pretty different from wow. Is there anything good coming out?
