WO4 had much deeper combat, magic attacks, and more fluid switching

          Anonymous

Bruh, magic attacks straight up make the game worse. Sacred treasures ranged from so broken you could spam them forever to clear the stage to completely useless, a tier list would be based on which character has which treasure.

Then WO4U let any character equip any sacred treasure so now you can use anyone you want while spamming trident.
The DLC sacred treasures were even more crazy, frickin lumen talaria basically beat the game on chaos difficulty for me.

      Anonymous

4-II has a bit of history. Originally it was supposed to be the usual "Xtreme Legends" update Koei always does. But during that period Capcom made a patent for "disc based upgrades for console games" or something focused on their own MH updated rereleases, and this fricked up with the way Koei releases Xtreme Legends. So to avoid going to court 4-II was released standalone and there was no way to link it to the original SW4 to unlock its content. This however meant that 4-II simply had less content because it was supposed to be an add-on for 4
tldr SW4 is the original game, 4-II was supposed to be an expansion but was released standalone and so it doesn't have SW4 main story mode

        Anonymous

But DX has both 4 and 4-II content, right?

          Anonymous

Nope. 4DX has all the original 4 dlcs but does not have the new characters from 4-II, as well as the new character based story mode 4-II has (4 has a faction based story mode like DW7 and 8). 4-II has all the characters but doesn't have any of 4's story content
There is no "complete edition" of SW4 out there, even in japan

            Anonymous

So if I get both 4DX and 4-II that should be all contents? Do their contents overlap each other?

Not really. It's missing characters and improvements from the later installments for that generation, like playing DW8 without the XL. Story-wise it's one of the weaker entries too, since it's faction-based instead of per character like before. Gameplay-wise, it introduced the controversial Hyper Attacks which somehow made the franchise's staple gameplay even MORE braindead than it was before, but if you're the kind of person who really likes the 1v1000 aspect of these games then this addition is pretty fun.

4 Empires or WO4U would be the latest revision of the SW's 4th generation, so I would consider picking those up instead of the first iteration here. 50 fricking dollars is highway robbery for a decade old game even with all the DLCs included, same with WO3U for 40. Koei Tecmo can go suck a dick.

It's amazing how wrong this entire post is. It's almost AI generated it's so wrong.

      > It's missing characters and improvements from the later installments for that generation, like playing DW8 without the XL
4-II has notably different systems than 4. They can't be ported over, and those systems were generally a step backwards from 4 since 4-II had little actual content and focused on emphasizing the need to grind to make up for that.

      >Story-wise it's one of the weaker entries too, since it's faction-based instead of per character like before
4 has one of the better story modes across all the Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors titles. Arguably one of the best.
      >since it's faction-based instead of per character like before
The character-based story modes across all of Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors have all had notably weaker stories than the games that used faction-based stories. The only faction-based story game that has a worse story than the character-based story mode games is Dynasty Warriors 8.

      >Error: Field too long.

        >Gameplay-wise, it introduced the controversial Hyper Attacks which somehow made the franchise's staple gameplay even MORE braindead than it was before
This is the most moronic take and everyone who parrots it is legally moronic.
Hyper Attacks are only viable against typical peasants and are hard countered by spear troops in formation, sumo troops, shield troops, banner officers (I think), riffle volleys, and officers. Against those you use your typical charge attacks.
The addition of Hyper Attacks alone increased the enemy variety, kept the game more engaging with the interplay between the situational use of two main combat strings, mitigated the typical musou snore of running from Point A to Point B by making Hyper Attacks have substantial forward motion per attack especially on Hyper Attack focused characters.
And hell that's not counting the Special function that characters have now, which in many cases can greatly influence how that character is played, or the character swapping function.

            >Enemies are pathetically weak and you'll constantly outpace the game's scripting and get stuck waiting for the dialogue and scripting to catch up for
            >Story is basically nonexistent. There's three different factions who are only fighting you because they're secretly on your side and are just "testing your resolve"
            >Resources come in so fast that you'll eventually be able to max out a character in minutes

Buddy, might want to reread the post. You might be thinking of WO3U, the actually good one.

WO4U is flaming dogshit hypertrash and the most disappointing sequel since vanilla Dark Souls 2. Well, WO4 was, Ultimate made some things better but the fact that they couldn't come up with anything even half as good as Gauntlet mode is telling.

Peons being useless is a nuMusou issue completely unrelated to hyper attacks. Compare with DW7 to 9, despite the fact these games still use only normal and charge attacks.

4U just added some new characters, new stages/ story mode content, Infinity Mode which is a really bad version of Gauntlet Mode, a pretty lame Challenge mode, and WO3's promotion system but reward acquisition is so bonkers that you can eventually max out someone after a single sage.

The latter was their own fault as All Stars was obviously rushed and unfinished (who ever heard of a musou game where you can't replay story stages unless you started that story mode completely over? It even has a final boss who isn't unlockable which is almost never a thing in Musou games).

      Anonymous

Yes. There is Warriors Orochi (on pc, en translated), Warriors Orochi 2 (but, actually, a standalone addon to 1 with several non-critical mechanics being different, not on pc) and Musou Orochi Z - which is Warriors Orochi 1 + all campaigns of 2 (addon), everything but a few words is jap only (there were unofficial fan translation project, but it had died around 5 to 10% of text translated leaving only very early alpha version of the translation somewhere in the internet) with all new characters being playable in all missions (free post-plot mode), dream mode a.k.a. even more what if/side-story missions, missions of 1 slightly reworked to match mechanics of 2 (addon), some characters hidden behind completing certain conditions of 1 can be unlocked both through conditions or through playing through campains of 2 (addon), and only widescreen, no proper 4:3 resolutions unlike in vanilla 1. Generally Z is better, but you either have to know japanese or to use wiki for menus and mechanics (just compare hieroglyphs as pictures) and old version of google realtime translator with camera (from around 2021 year or so, translations are shitty, but more or less correct). Most of "plot-heavy" dialogues happens in form of a visual novel between missions, inside missions most dialogues are "I'm a genius-... Oh no!" or "- Advance! - Ha-ha-ha, you fools, you had fallen right nto my trap!". Mission critical messages, with an exception of a few, usually contain the name of the officer/base you have to move to quickly to protect/kill. For more specific missions there are guides on gamefaqs (use guides for Musou Orochi Z, for 2 and 1 - last one only for character unlocks in 1).
Or play Warriors Orochi 1 to get the main mechanics and plot (just play through missions and read the plot without bothering to unlock anything specifically), then go to Z.

      Gameplay kino
The series takes a heavily romanticized version of historical wars and turns them into fully playable battles. Other games would handle these conflicts either by turning them into RTS campaigns or cutscenes
The Musou games let you play it all out including giving you missions and shifting the balance of power between armies as if there was an actual war going on, even if that war is only flavor to motivate the player it's still really cool

If you got into them from the older DWs, then it was a revolutionary kind of game for its time. Having a large-scale battle between two armies play out in real time in an action game is an unique and interesting concept.
In reality what's off-range is being simulated based on morale difference and if you paid attention to health bars and everything you could probably notice there is obviously something off and nobody is truly fighting off-screen

Was U really not enough to make 4 good? Gameplay-wise I think I like 4 more because of the updated DW8 and SW4 movesets and characters but all the maps sucked ass and there weren't any stages that you could just go ham and rout the entire map alone like there were in 3.

Although gameplay is kinda jank and not as refined as later entries, I loved the cutscenes. Also it has voice acting everywhere, even in the camp sections before missions.

      >Does 4 DX and 5 have any coomer design like Kai in SW3?
A lot of 5's girls are really hot, but only Mitsuki, the spunky redhead ninja girl who wears a full body latex suit with giant openings in the thighs covered by fishnet to show that she's not wearing underwear, has a coomer design.
4 has a lot of coomer designs like Naotora and Kai, but more importantly 4 DX comes with all the costume DLC so you get outfits like Naotora and her massive breasts wearing nothing but a bath towel, goth e-girl Gracia dressed like an honest to god succubus, or Kai dressed like this.

I still don't understand the appeal of musou, and I didn't mean it in a condescending way. I just don't. If I want the power fantasy of doing one swing sword and killed a brazillion mooks, I'd play Diablo. Or any other ARPGs. At least if it's One Piece or any anime adaptation musou I can understand the appeal, because there's an element of role playing as the characters. Well original musou too as historic Chinese generals but let's be real. No historic human can do a kamehameha wave and blast a hundred people in a straight line.

tldr sell me OG musou games. If anything I liked one of the old Capcom musou but even then I didn't finish it.

you are not supposed to like things other people like
it's okay to have your own tastes
Why I should you force you into something you have no interest in? Play games you like.

Either way - musou is more about crowd and territory control than "hack and slash" DMC type of a game. Think of beatem up evolved in very different direction than being brawler.

Generic footsoldiers are not main enemies, officers are.

        Anonymous

Thing is, I don't even dislike the game. I even found the art (and character (re)designs) cool. What I don't understand is, and not necessarily trying to like what I don't, what people find fun about the genre. Sure it's an evolution of beat em up, but I can say the same about the likes of DMC. Just different focus. Also I understand that people find DMC fun because of the cool combo potential against what is basically a ragdoll. Conveniently enough, it's also the same reason why people who don't like DMC won't play them -- they need challenge, and these people usually flock over to Ninja Gaiden.

I guess my point is I want to understand what Musou has among the sea of action games. Granted considering how Dynasty (and maybe Samurai) is such a long running series 'tradition' is enough reason to keep playing the series, but it's such a shallow reason that I want to believe there's a nuance of musou genre that I simply missed.

well play it more and figure things out for yourself. Beat entire main storyline or somethng. Why satisfy your curiosity with people's responses when game is right there in front of you.

People can like same game for different things.
What I like musou for - probably not the exact same reason other anon in thread likes it.

I consider it about crowd and territory control, as I stated. Battles are means of controlling it.
Capturing fields, cutting down officers, advancing forward - that's why I play these more than just moving enemies.

Sure, it is fun to defeat tons of enemies, but it's just part of it.

Do you like anime? Ever thought how one powerful character can just rush through the five to fifty enemies that will fall on his path? Want to feel mighty enough to just launch everybody in front if you into the air by hitting the ground with your mighty hammer? Make a stylish combo, that just devastates your tought enemy? Turn the tide of a battle almost singlehandedly? Being able to become not one, not three, but an entire cast of the game consisting of dozens of characters?
Ever played some japanese actions? You know, anime ones, where you unleash a fury of a thousand suns? In musou games you can do all that and, more importantly, KEEP doing that nearly non-stop, while also enjoying unveiling mysteries, going on an adventures, protecting your close ones, conquering the world! Follow steps of mighty Nobubaga, save poor defenceless peasants as noble Ma Chao (or whicheved chinaman had big white hat and green clothes from Shu line) from treacherous and greedy Dong Zhuo. Be cool, be powerful, defeat worthy and unworthy opponents, see stories of friendship and betrayal, of honor and treachery, of loyalty and malice, of tragedies and overcoming evil!

Because not a lot of people can into immersion, which is required to properly feel most of video games that isn't pong. And musou for the full effect requires to be able to immerse yourself fully into given setting taking all getsuga tenshous, emotions and atmosphere as a given thing, that exists for everybody. And because most modern media from tv to modern books still try to be clever by subversing everything, things like honor, love, loualty and bravery first and foremost. Which leads to this things not to be taught even through fairy tales, let alone through real life.
