Was it the right thing to do? He risked everything throwing away a "good enough" ending for a great ending. What does it say about him that he can play through the events he has experienced before and feign that he's seeing them all for the first time all over again, convincingly enough that his companions don't question him at all. I did party talk when I went back in time to before Jasper attacks you at Yggdrasil and Jade comments that you look a bit taller all of a sudden. She's the only one who makes such comment.

Who wouldn't go back in time and unmake all the good you have done so far just for this cutie with a big mouth?
I'm more upset how Serena goes back to being her sister doormat tho.

I'm definitely glad to have her back. I had a feeling someone was going to die and I thought it was actually going to be Serena because she's the less interesting of the two. Though Serena is basically tied with the Luminary in being "unkillable with infinite resources" so she and Luminary were anchors that never left my team. She's amazing and she did grow on me. She got a lot of character development when she cut her hair.

I wish that wasn't tied to a lousy accessory. It should be a toggle wish that permanently cuts/grows her hair when you do Drustan's challenge.

Re-age Veronica, as much as I'm against it, would work. Short hair Serena could do all of Veronica's moves and aged up Veronica looks exactly like Serena (they're twins). They'd just need to model all of Veronica's outfits for Serena and redo Pep moves and you're done.

      Anonymous

They have different body language. It wouldn't feel right if Veronica just walked and moved the same way are Serena.

All that said they should have taken the extra effort to just do it, DQ is all about touches like that. Technically the marriage/"living with" cut scenes are unnecessary to the gameplay but they made them.

funny how erik doesn't worry that altering the timeline might doom his sister again

        yeah, I'm with you

        As an aside, there's one detail in DQ11 that I missed from DQ8. When a member joins your party and that tune plays, I kept saying to myself "DO THE TWIRL!" and nobody twirls when joining your party in DQ11 ;_;

I'm with you, I think the practical thing would be to cut your losses and accept the world as it is. Things could've gotten much worse. As mentioned in the thread, things were bad, but it could be even worse. Luminary could've still went back to Cobblestone and married Gemma.

It bothers me how the Luminary ditches his friends to go make a better ending elsewhere. What about his mom, his friends, Gemma?

The party members losing their growth is just an extra layer of garbage.

      >The party members losing their growth is just an extra layer of garbage.
I loved the attention to detail there. I chuckled and made the reference "How do you do, fellow kids?" when my Luminary was 20 levels higher than everybody else, I took a screenshot there. That was so cool that they captured the state of my team at that point. Them being weak isn't a big deal though. You keep all of their equipment and they get magically buffed back to the levels you had them at.

Character growth, not levels. But yeah, that is a neat touch.

Honestly it works better if Veronica is the love interest. One of the biggest bummers about the original timeline is that she dies. If you take into account the Hero being in love with her, it makes sense that he would risk it all to save the one he loves

  10. 2 weeks ago

What they should've done is add some way of saving Veronica directly for exemple by doing a secret side quest or something so both option would've been available and without having to add act 3 and kill character growth. Would've given you 2 different but equal ending paths the player can follow, one where Veronica is still alive and one where she isn't.

I don't know how people play these games without bashing in their own skull. The combat is so boring and it is basically what you are doing 90% of the time.

Nah, others also notice something is off about the Luminary. Erik comments how you are suddenly much stronger, they comment on the sword, that he is acting kind of strange.
But yeah, he plays it off well enough that only Mordegon realizes what actually happened.
I enjoyed seeing another story. "What if the Luminary didn't fail back then?"

    No.
    1) He abandoned his actual teammates to stay with what are effectively clones of them. He left the timeline to save Veronica, but in his own timeline, Veronica is still dead, and now his party are left in a world without either him or Veronica.
    2) Either he was a moron or time-travel made him an amnesiac (which negates the point of time travelling), because he didn’t change his own actions at all. He doesn’t inform anyone about the King, and even sleeps in his castle, to the point that the sword would have been stolen again if not for the black tockle stopping the king.
(Also from a player perspective, it sucks that pretty much all the character development and party dynamic development in act 2 was erased (getting subconscious memories from the other timeline doesn’t fix it)

      >(Also from a player perspective, it sucks that pretty much all the character development and party dynamic development in act 2 was erased (getting subconscious memories from the other timeline doesn’t fix it)

I never understood this criticism. Isn't people living or dying more serious than character development? Would you hesitate undoing World War 2 because of the "character development" of soldiers who lived through it?

        Anonymous

The issue is that this is a fictional story. There is no dichotomy between “save person, lose character development”, and “keep character development, person remains dead”. The writers control the story. That would have written it so that both happen. Saving the person but losing the development is an completely unnecessary regression that didn’t need to happen.

There's some theories I've read where people think the alternate timeline party members somehow merge with the initial timeline, but I've never quite subscribed to that.
While I did like Veronica, we went through a lot at the end of that act with Serena's grief and her skills changing, with Erik's little sister getting into trouble, with the Soldiers of Smile. It always felt weird to just...leave that all behind. I have to wonder if there was a better way to bring Veronica back and still keeping the original party, but also have the space baby battle too.

if future trunks can do it, so can the luminary.

Literally everything turns out better, the timelines merge so there is no fricked up one he leaves behind, your party gets the memories of the old ones so they have all the character development from the old one, you save the world forever because you kill interdimensional super Satan in this one, every loose end like Sylvando's dad gets tied up.
It is the best option by far and everything ends up for the better, there's just a few autists on this board as usual who can't handle it.

Lol what? Who wouldnt toss out a "good enough" ending for a great one? He literally altered the world in favor of making everyone happy, yes, by doing what he did he erased the suffering and growth many went trough, but I do believe most people would be more than happy he did so they never had to experience the bad things they had suffered.
Only thing that I dont know how it fits is the fact in the end he supposedly altered the past in weird ways, but frick it, ultimately everyone is happy and that is that.
