Fricker didn't even show up in the basketball Mario game Square Enix made or any of the Fortune Street crossovers (the latter of which even had Mario RPG music).

Geno would have been one of the best additions to Smash if we didn’t get Sora in his place. The fact that we got Disney cooperating for a character in Smash over using a puppet from the SNES game with wide fan appeal is just insane.
Filename is still true though. If the roles were reversed Geno would be on the banner with the rest of the cast while Sora would get all the shitposts and “lol didn’t get in” memes.

I remember for the longest time thinking Smithy was the sword until spoiling myself on the strategy guide.
Square-Enix owns him and the guy that designed him isn't even working in Mario games.
Miyamoto probably sees him as the Poochie the Rappin' Dog of the Mario franchise, seemed cool at the time but probably has a contract stating he'll never come back again.
Mallow got actual character development and would deserve the spot far more than the exposition puppet.

Take this with a huge grain of salt, but I remember somewhere some credible Japanese leaker talked about why Geno will never make it in. It's because they see lots of demand for him but virtually none for a Super Mario RPG remake or sequel, so they believe that people are asking for him just because other people are. Square is also afraid that people would just see him as a Smash character and not a character from their RPGs.
Even if he was just bullshitting, the first point is probably true anyway because some ex-NOA employees talked about Mother 3 the same way.
