The music and surreal visuals always had the same vibe, but I first played it as a kindergartener so I didn't know to describe it that way.

Listen to soundtrack and think about the special stages.

The game has a dreamlike, wistful feeling to the sound and visuals. Maybe related to the fact that it started as a game about dreams. Part of that is just the Dreams Come True sound too.

"Melancholic" ain't the right word, at least not for Starlight Zone. I think "wistful" fits a bit better, but not wistful in a purely sad sense, more like in the "Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened" kind of way.

Did the devs even perceive that Sonic was "cool" when they made the first game? 2 and CD feels like they got sales feedback and aimed in that direction. 1 is different.

It does have a bittersweet angle, I agree.
Marble Zone music is like a new romantic synth pop anthem.
Always got the vibe of a heartbreak.

Why do so many /vr/ posts (i don't know how many posters) act like it's impossible for someone to articulate their own experience?

not really. only decades later do i get that sense because the music takes me back to being 11yo again.

anon is right. severe dunning kruger syndrome runs strong on this board people do get their low iq post ideas from other morons. not saying this is the case with op but a high percentage of threads are unoriginal slop.

        >Marbel Zone as gave me an Indiana Jones vibe
it always reminded me of music i would here in movies from france on late night tv. always thought that the song did not fit this zone well at all.

Pro tip for you ESL; don't throw around terms like "low iq", "morons" and "dunning kruger" when you yourself struggle to type English above a sixth grade level.

It's clearly not his experience. He didn't say "I found Sonic melancholic when I played it, am I the only one?" Instead he asked a completely nonsensical question.

The bonus stage music was pretty weird, otherwise no
Stuff that stood out at the time like sonic getting impatient if you left the controller idle are pretty much the vibe they chased ever since
