No. It was incomplete, much of the story didn't made sense. Only 3 waifus plus repetitive music. It wasn't bad, just not the best.

Animal Parade was the best. Followed by HM64 and BTN.

      is Mystic Melody any good?

Magical Melody? No. some people liked it, but personally I hated it. So many shit things. Controls for one, are a clunky mess. Characters look like shit. Placing furniture is a pain. Farming is also annoying, and items don't stack. Im pretty sure people that enjoyed are speaking exclusively out of nostalgia, although the mini games were alright.

Animal Parade is best on Dolphin with improved load times and increased internal resolution. On the original console, it runs poorly.
AP and BTN are the best. Frick Stardew Valley.

Looking for some nice mid 2000s console farming game. The graphics being slightly rough makes it better. Is AWL a good time?

      Anonymous

AWL is very slow, and while it has an interesting premise, is a slog to play.
Just try out Animal Parade on Dolphin emulator, but spend time choosing the best settings. I heard Tree of Tranquility is good too, but I've never played it.

No modern HM/Story of Seasons game is good. At least not as good as the last ones. Last good HM/SoS game was Trio of Towns for the 3DS. The Switch port of BTN (Mineral Town) plays and looks like shit. Story of Season PooT gets old really fast. HM One World is soulless. If it's only pure farm sim you want stick to Stardew Valley

      this one

      lol no

is probably what you're looking for.
AWL is also pretty good too but it's more focused on family-related stuff, there' also Save the Homeland(STH), and while i think it's good aesthetic wise, it's lacking a lot of content.

I recommend giving AWL a try but drop it after year two. Otherwise it's a time wasting slog. Friends of Mineral Town was great but look up tips and tricks or you can waste a lot of time. And people are right Animal Parade is a very successful HM game.

I remember reading something about this game being the closest to the series creator's initial intention in spite of being rushed / incomplete. The time limit for example makes it feel more like youre actually growing / aging which I think would be a great idea for a game that starts with the player character being born and ends with him dying and his grandson taking over, instead of just being an unending management game where you become a billionaire from harvesting lv99 potatoes and selling turnip stocks (there already is Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley for this).
It's still objectively a shit game though.

Honestly it'd be awesome to have a sort of 2 in 1 game where they planned two generations worth of characters/marriage candidates. Maybe have like your first character have a child and they have their childhood friends + people that move in over time that they could marry. Would be pretty neat if you had the second generation character marry a childhood friend and on your first run you saw her growing up with your son, for example.

If that's your criteria for the best HM game, then the SNES version should have been the best. It has all that plus it has aged relatively well thanks to SV.

AWL had some really cool advancements to the formula (namely ending the groundhog year problem where time never really advances and it's just the same shit year after year) and has some of the better written characters who aren't just 100% idyllically happy with no major personal problems or issues like how modern games in the series tend to be, but it's really lacking in content to keep you busy and engaged. Of course, because Harvest Moon/SoS/Rune Factory as a franchise is defined by taking one step forward two steps back the really cool innovations AWL never came back more fleshed out in future games.

I loved the N64 and PS1 games when I was a kid. Would literally piss myself because I just couldn't put the controller down. Then got the PS2 and Gamecube ones when they came out and thought they sucked. Felt hugely betrayed.

Hero of Leaf Valley is alright. Seems weird giving you a choice of girls when the main story has the villain falling for you. Variety is the spice of life yadda yadda yadda.

Absolutely not. It's so fricking slow and tedious, the farming is somehow worse than StH/HoLV which is an achievement in itself, needing to be slowly watered twice a day and you only make about 5 - 10g profit per crop unless you play the baby mode gamecube version and plant banana trees in which case you have more money than you'll ever need after just one year. Cows also take ages to care for and stop producing milk after two months so you have to constantly make sure to get them pregnant and spend extra time looking after the calf.
Or you could just ignore the farming/livestock aspect and fish because that's literally 10x more profitable than either with significantly less work.
The previous entries also had some sort of tangible goal to work towards. SNES has a score card at the end for various categories, 64 has the album and party ending to acheive, FoMT has the recipe book and mines to complete for a full set of useful tools, HoLV's entire gameplay revolves around completing questlines. AWL has a mine you can expand for zero reason and then you grow old and die. I'm glad I played the supposedly worse PS2 version because I found out later the Gamecube has even more years to trudge through for some godforsaken reason.

What are you talking about? There are 2 companies that "own" it. Harvest Moon by Natsume and Story of Season "the original" by Marvelous. It's not one company that's releasing garbage, it's 2

This is the saddest shit with the series tbh. The games have a lot of potential but for whatever reason these companies can't do it justice. There release a once in a blue moon hit like every so many years but fuccck.

Natsume, based on the last game HM One World seems like its trying, but they're either too incompetent or rush things too much because a lack of budget that they produce incomplete garbage. Xsneed/Marvelous I suspect intentionally are trying to kill the franchise. Like they're so fricking sloppy, and they have no excuse to be like that. I thought they were just shitting their focus to Rune Factory, but although I liked 5, it was release with a ton of bugs and other crap no one asked for. You can only hope both companies can produce something of quality someday, like they already know how to make a perfect game, they just don't do it.

the player character dies at the end, then how you played the game (if you grew a lot of crops, had lots of animals with high/low affections), who you befriended, and how you treated your family throughout the game determines what your son goes on to do with his life

I have extremely find memories of AWL - BUT in retrospect I think it was a game that could have been a lot better and if given a proper remake could be wildly successful.

The exponentially increasing time cycles was horrendous, the lack of cutscenes and character interactions after year one and two were sad, and incentives to keep playing past that 2nd time cycle are totally lacking.

If it was remade to have elements of Animal Parade, more character cutscenes to uncover, and a filled out map with more characters from Mineral Town (or even let you cross the mountain into a 3D Mineral Town rather than the GBA compatibility) I think it would be great.

It's not. All dialogue was nerfed, animals now require that you sell them and keep getting them pregnant if you wish to get it to 10 hearts, crop stars are just moronic and fun festivals like the Tomato festival from BTN was not included (although this is a FoMT port which didn't had it either but still)

If you enjoyed that game you probably also enjoy Netflix anime adaptations.
