Your best bet is hang out on IRC and on smaller websites (or smaller Ganker boards) if you truly want to escape the ironic normie corporate hell net. I've personally had much success with that (not a "zoomer" though I know a few who have all done the same) As for local accommodations, there are always local chatrooms and meetups for nerds and for niche hobbies.

I used to browse a lot of old forums and play with random bros via log me in hamachi or if the game itself had functioning servers. Good times. Now for the most part I play with people from Ganker, /vg/, and some irl buddies and strangers on a few discord servers. It's hard to find a really good server, but once in a while you get lucky. I met a few guys in the us military who were super autistic and into barotrauma, and I had some fun playing with em a couple times-- turns out if you're a polite and fairly competent team member, people will add you on steam and invite you to shit. I know discord gets a ton of crap from ppl here, and I've had my fair share of shitty discord experiences, meeting literal pedos, groomers, and all sorts of other shitty people, but if you look hard enough youcan find some real stellar fellers.

Back when I played more often, I would just hop into random servers and use the same name every time-- actually got a bit of a reputation during those months because ppl knew I wasn't going to grief. Met a lot of recurring players and a handful of hosts who were testing out their own custom subs. It was a great time, and I really need to get back into the game some day. Last time I played we had a bunch of dudes crouching up and down, swinging their flashlights everywhere while the captain was throat singing, heh.
In retrospect I should've stuck with that autist military barotrauma group and played more with em, but I've always had more fun being alone and just popping in random situations to see how I can help. Plus I think the host joined the marines or something, I forget, so he also disappeared. It was cool while it lasted.

              Nice.

same. Used to play with some IRL friends, it went from random sandbox missions to our best attempts at playing campaign once the griefer idiot got kicked out. We even started making our own mods custom enemies and weapons, and one day for no reason we stopped playing

Reminds me of circa 1999-2002. My friend had a beach house down the shore on the bay and we'd be invited over for a weekend for a few years. I'd load up the N64 and Gamecube and in the evenings after a swim we'd all congregate boys and girls in the family room to play Smash, Mario Party, Goldeneye together with bowls of Cheetos, M&Ms. The girls smelled like chlorine (there was a pool too), and wore the cutest shit and it was just fresh young teen innocence.

Being a poor kid sucked but now i can get a game if i aant it but i dont feel the same way about it or any hobby i have now. No hobby fills my interest as much as it did pre 2018. I think the last games i put in mad hours into were monster hunter world and persona 5.

imo corner desks are more comfortable because you want your arm rests to be at desk height anyways but when your arm rests are at desk height you are very limited in how far you can scoot under the desk with your chair. with a proper corner desk you would basically avoid having arm rests in the first place and scoot so deep under the desk that the desk itself becomes your arm rest. you want the desk to literally touch your abdomen/chest. thats the most comfortable you can possibly sit, at least imh(humble)o.
but try fitting a corner desk in your rooms if its simply not suited for it. i really want one but i cant put it anywhere so ill have to settle for a standard desk

Worst thing about getting older and Vidya is seeing the industry and companies regress where gameplay and new ideas don't matter anymore and instead it's about graphics and mediocre "le deep" writing in "games" that take away more and more control from the player. A thread last night pointed out that changing the language used on forums would create two parallel demographics. Just calling a certain genre of games "walk and talks" incites ire among casuals. The word "game" is too loaded at this point and we need a new paradigm.

They created an identity, which is a very powerful tool. That's why I'd rather redefine in healthier terms and pinpoint exactly what people like and don't like. The problem is it can't be pretentious, ludo enjoyer makes for some dank memes but misses the mark. Just separating games from experiences and identifying the tropes would go a long way towards killing all the propaganda, but board culture is banned because it alienates ad revenue...I mean newbies and phoneposters.

I recently got an O'Reilly book about vidya AI from 2004, and in the intro chapter it was being really optimistic about the future of vidya AI, speculating that machine learning (I think it used a different term for it but basically that idea) would be used to fine tune AI for each player to make games be more enjoyable, but in the years since the book was written I've only really seen that in Amiibos in Smash. Feels like video game AI has just been getting worse over the years, especially from my /vst/-centric POV.

      >Nobody called themselves a "gamer" when I was a kid
I remember seeing the term in the late 2000's, but mainly to describe either players in the MLG or hardcore gamers in the old sense of the term. Then the "casual gamer" became a thing (I still remember the spread in EGM about it with the pic of old grannies playing Wii games) and from then on everyone was a gamer.

    Sorry, no.

It wasn't just the games, it was the specific time period and the community too, as present day classic WoW helped many of us realize.

What makes me sad is that zoomers don't know how bad they have it. The days of playing games because it felt like an adventure in a fantasy world or a fun activity with a community you are familiar with are over. Now we're in the era of the atomized player, hooked into automated matchmaking systems, scared to communicate with other players and studying a mathematically optimized metagame rather than exploring it for themselves.

You can still have fun, but the days of being able to find it around every corner are done and you really have to work for it.

Last laugh is bis for Unholy DK DPS, it doesn't matter that it has defense and parry on it, it's the highest weapon dps that drops in Naxx/OS/EoE. Same thing with Torch of Holy Fire, it has Mp5 on it so you would assume it's a "healer" weapon but boomkins/spriests/eleshamans also want it because well, it's the highest Spellpower weapon. You can call this min/maxing homosexualry or whatever for not just giving the "tank" weapon to the tanks, but the tanks are minmaxing homosexuals themselves for leaving over not getting a drop.

Why is it the internet became significantly less social when extroverted normalgays invaded? I played wow and ragnarok online back in the day, and most people were social and friendly. It's not that normalgays invaded the games themselves, it's that normalgays invaded the culture of the games. They brought with them streaming and other types of "content creator" bullshit which inevitably lead to people wanting to be the first to do any sort of thing in a game so they could showcase it to their audience of captive forum posters or stream audience or what have you. Accordingly, everyone now obsesses over doing everything optimally or at least close enough instead of going through these games at their own pace. Conversing with randoms takes away from that.

One of my recent experiences with the modern internet is the constant danger of getting backstabbed. I've been on the internets since 2000 and only recently found a new hobby in Doom mapping. I only let two people on the planet playtest my maps before I release them after several months of work, and they are both not interested in mapping itself. I do that because the Doomworld forums are a hive of disgusting troons, backstabbers, morons, attention prostitutes and power-tripping admins that ban on a whim. They will steal your shit and publish it as their own, you can't trust anybody anymore. After doing research it turns out that the website was completely different up until 2015, when lefty politics infested this ancient forum, by 2017 it was pretty much over. It turned from a friendly place with banter that used to make jokewads regularly into a SJW safe space shithole where people get permabanned for not accepting individuals that openly proclaim to cut their dicks off. I made the mistake of cooperating with one other mapper, ONE MAPPER and it almost got me banned off the site.

Sadly, this is everywhere, now. Many of the old forums are dead and move to reddit or discord, whom are control by those homosexuals. Even if those forum are up, they will get taken over by those trannies and sjw. Many of the kids coming into the internet are being taught all the moronic sjw and troony crap, so their number will always keep growing. Its a sad state of affair.

I still frequent a few old forums which consist mostly of two dozen grognards who are still into the hobby, and the odd new zoomer who wants to join. A pattern I've seen is that often, the site admins have long abandoned the website, and so the passionate moderators cannot make changes to anything, which leads to long-standing problems not being adressed, which kills the forum over time. Making a new forum to move into is also a death blow, because it just wouldn't be the same. All this is even without trannies and SJWs shitting up the place, which also happens, especially if the hobby contains females.
I just want to have my comfy old forums back, where you could actually form friendships IRL.

This is sort of why I'm so surprised that people here bother to make OC with no names attached. Aside from literal screencaps of threads and content that's offensive in and of itself (so no normalgay would attach their name to it), there's nothing stopping people from picking it up and claiming it as their own. Which, of course, has already happened with greater frequency back when Ganker was seen as the OC powerhouse of the internet but now that everyone cares so much about their online identity, it's surprising that talented people don't just make Patreons or social media accounts to make money for the same amount of work.

The issue is that the Internet became omnipresent and integrated to real life. People used to "go" to the Internet with the express purpose of connecting with each other. But nowadays everybody is always connected at all times. Even when we're at work or at school or at public transport, wherever we are we have connection to the Internet. MMOs as a result have lost much of their appeal. What is the point of playing a game that is all about connecting with people, when everybody is already connected with people at any given time to begin with? It seems people are exhausted by all this social connectedness and rather want more time alone instead.

        >hardly anyone wants to interact, everyone just sprinting to the finish like the game is a race
Why is it the internet became significantly less social when extroverted normalgays invaded? I played wow and ragnarok online back in the day, and most people were social and friendly. These days multiplayer games are silent at best, and outright hostile at worst. I don't even have my mic plugged in anymore.

It didn't really help that the same normies that made fun of people that were playing games were taking over and goes something e-girlSUCHANERD! or I WAS ALWAYS A GAMERS!LOL! And the companies started pandering to them hard.

You can't go home because it's not there anymore. WoW is not shallow, but it's built around social interactions and 2004-2008 internet culture so the game simply doesn't work in today's environment. You would need to build a game like it from the ground up and have realm resets with world and item discovery randomizers in place to keep that feel in perpetuity from being optimized to hell. Also to frick dataminers.

you wanna know why things get worse? here i'll just lay it out for you shall i?

a company is created, that company wants to make money, so they start thinking about ways to make money. over years the ways they make money become more efficient and egregious, until eventually the only way they can make more money is to come up with even worse ideas.

do you honestly think the second a company is created they have all these terrible ideas on day one?

the longer a company exists the more new ideas to make money they come up with. this is basic shit anon. the scary part is currently there's no cap to this, there's no end-point to how many new ideas to make money they're going to come up with. this is how and why we're spiraling towards a very shitty future. we peaked at the space race with all the new tech and now we're stagnating and being robbed.

The pandemic showed that work doesn't have to be your life. It showed that you didn't have to be at the office to get work done. It showed that you don't have to be glued to your monitor 8/9 hours a day to be productive. People who experienced this will not soon let it go.

I hate this historically illiterate meme so fricking much. Anyone who repeats this has NO idea how hard of a live the average medieval peasant had. Sure you had plenty of days “off work” but those days were spent farming your own food, doing backbreaking labor from dark to dark, and dying from things that wouldn’t be more than a minor, easily-treated inconvenience nowadays.

the mmo killer is shit gameplay with modern game design. Most people could bear shit gameplay with the novel idea of an MMO game. As the novelty fade out, only shit gameplay remained, and they filled the gap with more monetization and progression systems, instead of adding what they lacked and improving what made the genre, that is, respectively, better gameplay/combat and more involved social mechanics. Those who use social media are not the same as those who play MMO

I never cared about high lekev gear or raiding other then superficial. And we were the majority of the player base back then. I don't know why you people don't play on RP servers. There's still tons of people who are happy to chat all day while playing the game.
I met frickloads of cool people on Classic WoW private servers, Warhammer private servers, Classic-Blizzard, and now I'm meeting lots of cool people on an RP server on Retail WoW.

          Anonymous

In my experience it is still easy to meet people in MMOs *if that's specifically what you're trying to do.*
You need to go out of your way to socialize with people in an inorganic way, either by trying to get in to a private chat channel, or striking up conversations with random people sitting in town or questing, or participating in some ingame event where people are socializing.

In the past you would just see someone doing the same thing as you and you'd talk to them, or you'd make a party because you needed someone to help you and you'd talk to them. That's not really the case anymore and it's why these games feel antisocial to so many people now.

Gimmick. Unless you're actually jack into the system, VR is just a gimmick. Everyone thought Motion control is the future when the Wii got release, but it died down soon enough.

Wii motion was shit. It was PS Move that made it actually precise. Sony had the tech in 1999 but they decided to perfect it instead of releasing a gimmick. And now motion is a big part of VR which is only growing.

MMO is going to have a second golden age tough. Once VR gets better.

It's a combination of games that were designed around the player not having access to everything is to know about it colliding headfirst with wiki culture and talking with people online no longer being a novelty.
The things that MMOs did well - skinnerboxes, socialization, large explorable worlds - are all now available elsewhere, in games that don't require a monthly subscription, and people are much less interested in talking to a stranger in a game than they were in the past.

The games that have survived do so because they fulfill a specific niche, like FFXIV for example is basically a JRPG/VN inside of a Second Life-tier social ecosystem. People are playing it to make their characters pretty and follow along the story.
Runescape survives because of its dedication to autistic grinds. Everyone playing it loves the slow incremental increase of numbers and the chance for something rare to drop after your 1,000th boss kill.

Meanwhile games like Fortnite and Apex and LoL have taken the PvP side of those games and made them something you can hop into, play for an hour and hop out, and then gacha and modern action RPGs basically all have item and gear upgrade management like an MMO would.
The only thing still unique to MMOs in a gameplay sense is probably raiding, and that seems to be what people are really focused on these days, those who still play MMOs.

yup. youtube and easy access to info and discussion online ruined a lot of mystery.
mmos just arent fun anymore because 95% of players just copy guides or risk getting bullied/mocked by others doing the same thing following the top 1%.
back when i played daoc in 2002-2005 i could play whatever the frick i wanted and whatever spec i wanted and ALWAYS find people to play with. sure there were "the best of the best" players but most people weren't like that.

I'm starting to ditch my phone more and get rid of anything resembling social media, which is really just Ganker at this point. I mean it's not like you can treat yourself like a kid or think of yourself as a kid, but there's defnitely another way to avoid the crushing hellish negativity, anger and depression the modern world wants you to feel. Reading books, playing cool games (and not really even bothering to look up anything about them, much less the opinions of others) and being just letting the world become a little more mysterious. Besides, I have a fricking profession to focus on too. All the best to you anons with pure hearts.

A word I've been hearing thrown around is "whimsymaxxing," trying to look at the world with the same wonder and appreciation a child does.
Try to just enjoy small things and see if there's anything new to learn about the things you're interested in, or try harder to be genuinely interested in things. Appreciate the world around you rather than letting yourself get caught up in cynicism.

        >Appreciate the world around you rather than letting yourself get caught up in cynicism.
Basically just that. It's not even that hard to do, I've found. I'm nearly 30 so I'm not going to look at the world like a child does, but I'm certainly going to be happy I'm alive and healthy and have the capacity to do all of these wonderful things. Anyway, it's a little late so I must sleep, but good tidings to you anon.

I miss this era. I grew up around the tail end(born in 95), so i didn't do cool shit like LAN parties, but i did play alot of Star Wars Battlefront on my moms PC when I was a kid, and i actually met some nice people there. It was super easy to just strike up a conversation with someone during a match back then, and it seems now people rarely ever wanna actually communicate in online games. they just wanna play. really hurts the experience, and i wish i could go back.

You can't go back home to your family, back home to your childhood, back home to romantic love, back home to a young man's dreams of glory and of fame, back home to exile, to escape to Europe and some foreign land, back home to lyricism, to singing just for singing's sake, back home to aestheticism, to one's youthful idea of 'the artist' and the all-sufficiency of 'art' and 'beauty' and 'love,' back home to the ivory tower, back home to places in the country, to the cottage in Bermude, away from all the strife and conflict of the world, back home to the father you have lost and have been looking for, back home to someone who can help you, save you, ease the burden for you, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time--back home to the escapes of Time and Memory.

It's not our fault we can't truly go back. Normies won't LET us, because they control the industry now. Games used to make fun a priority, and the atmosphere of the times (which is what we really want back since the games ARE still around) reflected that. Fun games are made by people with fun personalities, boring games are made by boring people. It's that simple. Normies are boring as frick and really got their claws in deep within the industry around 2006, give or take. Fast forward to now and there's less style and flair for a vast majority of games. Why? Because with every passing year, more people who don't LIKE video games are working on video games.

Oh, but that's just it, anon: I do know. Ratchet & Clank was one of my favorite series when I was younger, and this dumb b***h had at least somewhat of a hand in writing the new one on PS5. She was unhinged enough to actually get fired over it though (she claims she left Insomniac on her own, but I don't fricking buy that for a second considering how mad she is when she brings it up and the fact the final game left her out of the credits). She had an autistic meltdown over the concept artists giving that fem version of Ratchet breasts, so that was at least kind of funny to see, in a sad way. (Would have posted the "lombax tiddies" meltdown but for some reason whenever I try to post an image in this thread, the post never actually appears.)

Video games are about narratives now anon. These normie morons throw tantrums online when FIGHTING games don't have a story!....

Never was much of a fighting game guy growing up, could never get inputs to come out consistently and back then I'd usually just move on to a different game instead of just gitting gud. I've got a few friends who are into Guilty Gear though, and I felt their souls exit their bodies once we all found out Bridget got handed over to the trannies thanks to Strive. There's really nowhere to run except back to the past or combing the indie scene, and even that's questionable sometimes.
