        >>>>>now
Localization was always about replacing any visible aspect of the original culture with the target country's culture, this is literally how every Japanese game has been in it's official English versions for decades.
Now instead of the people in charge only thinking people will have kneejerk reactions to T&A or religious themes they're also using it as a way to push leftist propaganda via "writing" in combination with the former "methods".
Anything even remotely about biological sex or "___-phobic" behavior from characters towards femoids, gays or trannies = problematic. The censorship of T&A and religious themes has also ramped up in recent years to match this, the latter only not happening if it's got a "DAE le religion bad xD" message in any way.

This has always been corporate bullshit and has nothing to do with anyone who just wants good games.

There are enough differences in culture that a localization is different from a translation. The problem arises when the localization is not actually targeted at your culture but is instead focused on an entirely fictional culture crafted from goyslop.
A translation + contextualization would just be the "keikaku means plan" meme but applied to everything but at least it would be less prone to faux-culture localization.

You do know most of the time these translators work closely with the writers, right? Like how Netflix acquired the Evangelion catalogue and one of the people working at Khara worked on the new subtitles? There was this whole manufactured controversy over "censorship" when the translation was actually as close as it could be. Same thing is happening here.

No. The Dev team already gives the Localization team a rough translation of the text. And then they American it up and remove any Japanese jokes and puns for memes and whatever trending social political BS the Localization team is currently freebasing.

          >You do know most of the time these translators work closely with the writers, right?
In the video game industry this is almost never the case. Rather what's standard for video games is for the translators to have zero contact with the original developers at all.

            Anonymous

It's rarely the case even outside of games, even if they "work closely with the original authors" in other mediums like anime/manga, literature, etc. most of the time it's usually just requesting them to provide the full raw script and that's it. There's obviously no back and forth between them and even if there was it's not like there's a 3rd party there to verify if the TLs are actually faithful or not. They would totally lie if a developer or author asked if their "translations" are good, it's the only reason most of them even have a job still. They enjoy the fact these people are halfway across the world and don't understand English at all, and also don't have the time from all the deadlines they have to actually verify if their work was good or not. When people raise enough of a stink about it they actually do get nixed like what happened with Treehouse, unfortunately they just replaced them with more morons.
Seems like a no brainer to have some QC like that, but that's inconvenient when you want to spam memes and idpol cancer into the dialogue.

              >When people raise enough of a stink about it they actually do get nixed like what happened with Treehouse
The only thing that changed with Treehouse is that they got forbidden from censoring visual elements like costumes. They still butcher any script they get their hands on.
Tangentially, all this hubbub about NoA's contractors is also reflected in localisation; Treehouse only has a few core localisation staff (that has not changed, they've only been shuffled around projects) while the bulk of all their localisation work is done by contractors. This would also be a large part of why Treehouse's localisations are so garbage; there are too many morons working on them with too little oversight and a lack of a sole overseeing editor results in inconsistent translations and translation approaches.

      >It's juvenile
In other words, they're not a joyless adult who understands that games are supposed to be fun
      >Homophobic
Imagine believing this when BL and Yuri are very popular genres. Japan has a history of sexual content more explorative and deviant than most, only losing in terms of ridiculousness to the troony illness being propagated by American leftists.
      >Transphobic
In regards to the notion of "blurring the line between the sexes", again this is just historically inaccurate. The concept has existed for hundreds of years in Japanese culture.
Now clearly, you mean the very modern view of sex and the male/female societal "roles" as your ilk often describe, bastardized by a literal pedophile murderer and rebranded as "gender", now being force-fed to everyone as "progressive" ideology.
      >Misogynistic
Another buzzword thrown out that is clearly an attempt to portray yet another nation as some patriarchal hellscape for the modern woman, while conveniently ignoring that Japan is probably one of the worst places to work as a man, what with their insane work culture that literally drives their younger male generation to suicide or death from overwork.
It's also arguably the main contributor for why their birthrate is in jeopardy.
      >pedophilic
I can already tell this is because of the presence of e-girlcon/shotacon fictional media. I do find it ironic and hypocritical that the two groups you are implicit in supporting, homos and trannies, are notably overrepresented as sexual abusers and pedophiles.
      >When they make the games more like western games they are objectively making them better.
The most popular western games recently have been battle royales and MOBAs, all of which are largely lacking in creativity and rely on making their userbase addicted to playing the game instead of actually enjoying the game. Along with the F2P model and cash shops, the state of western gaming has been mostly shit for years.

They pull the same shit in the dubs they work on. Can't have a character only speak their native language with their accent, they MUST be pronouncing English with an accent as well.
I usually tend to prefer the original work's language, so if they have them sound like this in the original I usually don't mind. But localizers and fan TLs are tryhard, wannabe writers that feel like they need to prove something, at the expense of another's vision.

I can read and translate japanese and korean (i do it for work).
    It's a lie.
You can translate everything 100% except extremely rare cultural inaccessible phrases. If you have them, you can always say something very similar in the english language in the most of cases.
In the ultra-remote case you can't find anything, like the moon stuff that always came into mind, just translate litterally and add two fricking brackets to explain the phrase.
    It's just the BETTER way.
Every translator who modify the original writings is a liar or incompetent.
    Wake up.
Also: it does't take years to translate a game. I usually have to translate pages of bureaucratic and business stuff DAILY. And don't tell me game dialogues are more complex than investment funds and real-estate contracts.

The localizers that parrot the "direct and/or literal translations are bad" line only use it to justify their horrendous rewrites. People understand that literal translations can sound stiff and unnatural when translating to any language. The main issue people have, and have basically always had in regards to localization, is that they often don't translate to something as close as possible in meaning, and some of them even admit they purposefully choose misleading or outright wrong TLs so they can include some moronic script change like they're writing their shitty fanfics instead of translating. When some of the biggest offenders have to literally write up a justification of a dozen+ tweets for their moronic change, you can immediately discard it as the garbage it is.

Sometimes you have to invert the order of two subordinate sentences for clearer flow, so that means I can inject trannies and pronouns into the game's translation.

translate: to move a thing from one point to another
localize: to frick it up along the way
Good on you, friendo, hope reading asian legal documents isn't too mind numbing

that shouldn't really be the point of localisation. what we have with games today is like what they did to early pokemon with the onigiri to jelly donut shit that people to this day still hate.

I can read and translate Japanese, French, and Arabic. You're right that loocalizers are moronic liars and my words should never be taken to justify ruining the original work, but translating media requires different skills than translating business documents. One needs not only to be able to understand countless cultural references but the ability to comprehend the media to convey the intentions of the writing. There is no subtext in a real-estate contract.

to be honest doesn't matter if you are right, the most common occurence is that most literary translators of videogames and anime are fricking lazy c**ts

Also, by their own admission, utilizing another's work as proxy to push out their shitty, failed writer fanfic script.

I will say I did like the weird, incorrectly translated names we got in the SNES fan translation era, before easily accessible online databases for mythological references and such were around, but yeah you would hope to have someone with a real understanding of story structure

      Original.
Alternatively, Translation 1, but in panel two, translate "pan" as "bread" but put "pan" above it, ruby-character-style, in order to preserve the pun.

Translation 1 but use translator notes to explain what Nii, Pan and No-pan means. It really isn't that hard, idk why people shy away from using translator notes these days.

because 99% of the translations are dubtitles and you can put translation notes in a dub

Kei-nii sounds moronic, but its also annoying to read 'big bro kei' every sentence, doesn't sound natural.
      2 should be
      >Hey, Hey, Kei, bro!!!
      >What kind of bread do you like?
      >I'd love Sayu showing me her (bare) buns
      >big bro is such a pervert

      I'm fine with either 1 or 2.
2 is good if you can bring some value by compensating lacking cultural understanding, metaphors, analogies.
The translator can't put an essay of explanation on every word joke.

        essay lmao
(TL Note: Pan = bread, no-pan = pantyless)

There have been such things as a mix of type 1 and 2. Unless its really culturally specific there's no reason to call a common word by its languages name. In that case "pan" instead of "bread". If its something specific to culture translator notes are perfectly fine.

I'm genuinely worried about the future of our species if trannies continue their rampage and destruction of everything in their path on their quest to be validated, not giving a frick who or what they're hurting. It really feels like they want everyone else to suffer with them because they can't cope with how unhappy they are that no amount of surgery will magically make them change genders.
