Why would you rename it to the newer thing that took inspiration from the older thing? They're called 2D platformers anyways not whatever meme name morons comes up with.

Thanks to Hollow Knights 40+ hour play time. I never want to ever go back and play it again.
But Metroid. I go back to Super, Zero Mission, Fusion, and the Prime games ever year.

Except it's literally nothing to do with Nintendo. I do the same with Castlevania. Those are short too.
Short. Sweet. Concise. Hollow Knight on the other hand. The map is fricking huge and most of it has nothing in it.
Hollow knight isn't a bad game by any means. But I'm not going back to it.

Hollow Knight was bought the most on the tendie machine. So it makes no sense. HK fans just want to feel superior and claim HK is the best metroidvania to ever exist.

    Why exactly?
HK hasn't exactly brought anything new to the table or inspired games in the series.

How the frick do you make an 8 hour metroidvania game? Symphony of the Night was at least 20 hours and that was like 25 years ago. There are gameboy games longer than that.

Only Link's Awakening comes to mind, but then that's been called a 5 hour game so I don't know.

Both are side scrolling platformers. Metroid is not a genre.

Metroid is not a genre. HK is not a genre. Just call them 2D platformers and replay Hollow Knight again for the fifth time.

Why do I have a feeling that Hollow Knight shills don't actually play Metroidvania games?

They are kinda like Dark Souls 3 fanboys. hey played DS3, Bloodborne... and nothing.

Everyone in this thread is a drooling moron. The reason for this fabricated rivalry is to bait and anger Nintendo fanboys. Anyone who can't see that is legitimately borderline moronic. The thing is though that there are so many shitposters trying to stir up shit that actual discussion gets brought up. Back when HK released you had so many people calling it genre defining. A bunch of e-celebs saying things like they felt like they should have payed more for it because it had so much content packed into a $15 game and that they don't know how other games in the same genre would ever be able to compete again. HK got it's deserved praise. Didn't it win best indie or something along those lines? It was extremely clear that it wasn't just some industry darling either. It was a fan favorite for a lot of people. Now that is being used to bait the toddlers. It seems to have been working too because they can't really refute that it is a good game without blatantly lying. For every 5 bait posts there is 1 angry console war loyalist losing his shit. They are the same people getting mad that people emulate Nintendo games. It is absolutely hilarious to watch.

It should be renamed to pitroid since Pitfall II is the real daddy of the genre.

I have a question to everybody that played Metroid Dread:

does it offer anything in terms of design, gameplay or new ideas that I die Metroidvania games do not? And is there anything in Dread that indie Metroidvanias can not possibly match up to?

Well New to the metroid series as your progress through the game your actions shift and frick up prior areas you have already been to. collapsing portions of rooms. Setting prior areas on fire or freezing them. Lifting specialized tunnels after defeating the Emmi's. Getting halfway through the game and letting something escape confinement.
This isn't new to the metroidvania genre though.
But you don't need a game to reinvent the wheel every iteration. you just need it to be good.

If it wasn't bait this would have been some reddt tier moronic shit like pic related
