      nah that's BotW
game is a 7/10 indie sandboxer at best and everyone treats it as though it's the best game of the previous decade or something. I want epic stories, sweeping soundtracks, and memorable dungeons again, not ubi-soft towers, cat-walking-on-a-piano soundtracks, and hundreds of single-puzzle shrines that all look identical.

No it isn't. Like a lot of games you would only think so if you weren't there to experience the context it came out in. That era of gaming was a time when you would get hyped up for something and it would actually live up to it. Unthinkable these days.

A Zelda game in the vein of ocarina of time only with a more flexible approach is all I want. A link between worlds did this well on 2D, but the mainline 3D games have never done it. I want to have the option of approaching the temples and obtaining gear in a dark souls 1 / super metroid type way. Bring back the labyrinth esc feel of Zelda. Bring back the atmosphere. Bring back the music. Bring back the items / gear to unlock which in turn open the world up more. It's sad that we might never get something like this again

Nobody thought this. Basically everyone (correctly) predicted that wagglan would not outlast the Wii itself. It was still annoying though.

In any case these games are all more similar to each other than they are to BotW. It really is a dramatic departure from the traditional system of item-based progression and dungeons built around said items. Now it's just "here's some toys, do whatever, make sure you pick up every piece of litter you find for crafting."

Do you not remember that gen? People absolutely thought that. You had the wii selling shitloads, massive successs everywhere and on the 360 you had nothing but brown n' bloom garbage and other shit aimed at dudebros.

Many people genuinely thought games made for gamers was over. Several devs, including Nintendo, specifically said so. It was unbelievably dire, every game had like 5 hours of tutorial and was designed to have no challenge at all. This wasn't a genre - almost everything was like this. The sole reason Dark Souls 1 became popular at all was because it came out in this environment and a game being hard and not holding your hand was extremely rare - compared to DeS where that was still unremarkable.

The other notable thing about that gen is that AA pretty much died, taking whole genres with it. Indies hadn't really taken off yet so if you liked any genre that didn't have AAA appeal then too fricking bad, it's gone now. The huge rise of indies making stuff like platformers/cRPGs and throwback games in general was a response to this.

This is also when always online/pay to use your own online/DLC etc started too - again changing gaming forever for the worse.

That gen was fricking horrific and I distinctly remember also thinking gaming was basically fricking over.I genuinely feel bad for the kids who grew up on wiis/360s. Must have been so fricking shit and they wouldn't even have known better.

Zelda games rely on level design and puzzle-solving, and if you half-ass those the entire game falls apart. It's not as easy to phone it in.

For such a beloved series, there seems to be a real lack of Zelda-likes. The few that exist aren’t very good. The first Darksiders, Soul Reaver and 3D Dot Game Heroes are the only ones I remember enjoying. As that other anon said, it all comes down to level design, and most game devs these days just aren’t talented enough for that sort of thing. I sometimes wonder if even Nintendo’s current devs are capable of making classic Zelda dungeons anymore? Maybe BotW’s poor excuses for dungeons are all they’re capable of now.

BotW dungeons were great outside of all looking the game. You have to have awareness of the entire space and how the rooms relate to each other instead of just doing one self-contained puzzle per room

They had zero fun or identity outside of one minor gimmick. Also, the puzzles are so easily broken you can solve them the wrong way.

Agreed, OP. I enjoyed every single mainline LoZ game except BotW. I'd like to believe we can make a return to the classic formula after everyone's had their fill of the open-world sandbox stuff, but that may be too optimistic. I guess there's still romhacks and randomizers.

Every game that wants to stand out and sell has to do the tired old sandbox, open world, crafting, looting and survival. As long as you put these in and dilute your game, the masses will eat it up. Even FROM finally succumbed to this madness.

I wouldnt be surprised if the next big zelda does a lot with sand and sand physics, which could be cool in a lawrence of arabia kind of way. Big towers, dungeons filling with sand, big pyramids appearing out of sandstorms.

It seems to be the way they are heading, windwaker was cell shading, unifying the brand look, and water travel, latest zelda is open world and air, almost being comfortable falling from insanely high distances, gliding, building flying machines.

Sand is next, eventually. Sandsurfing too, hopefully.

I have 3 problems with modern zelda.
First is lack of any challenge after 5 hours in game even in master mode. I get bored with easy games and can’t enjoy them. Shrines are way too easy as well.
Second is lack of good rewards. Armor is very limited and most sucks compared to easily obtainable knight armor. Weapon rewards are useless because of durability.
Third is absolutely garbage tier quests. They had all the tools to make cool quests, but still made 95% of them boring fetch shit.

Everyone complains about the weapon durability but the answer to making the game more fun is that Link needs even less health and the armor should break too. All the un-fun elements of this game come from the fact that you can too easily reach a level where nothing is a threat to you.
